Editorial Reviews

Product Description
What skills and tactics give you the best chance of effectively defending yourself with a knife? If you had only limited training time and resources to develop your knife skills, what would you practice? In this amazing video, Michael Janich answers these questions with an incredible crash course in his system of Martial Blade Concepts (MBC). Janich begins by graphically demonstrating what small knives can actually cut and teaches you exactly how and where you must cut an attacker to stop him effectively. He then explains the critical concepts of fighting with a knife and leads you step-by-step through the best go to moves of his MBC curriculum. Finally, he teaches you how to connect these techniques into high-speed training drills that will quickly hone your reflexes to a razors edge

5.0 out of 5 stars Great DVD Literally Loaded With Sound and Valid Information, February 18, 2009
By Shawn Kovacich "Author of the Achieving Kicki... (The Greatest Little City in the World) - See all my reviews

I recently purchased this DVD along with Counter-Blade Concepts: Realistic Empty-Hand Tactics Against Edged-Weapon Attacks, which I haven't had the opportunity to watch yet, and I am pleased to say that it was not only money well spent, but I was the one who actually got a tremendous value for my money. The information contained in this DVD is absolutely priceless. Now that's not to say that I agreed with absolutely everything the instructor (Michael Janich) had to say in this video, but it was awful darn close.

You can see the Filipino influence in his tactical use of a folding blade for self-defense, and that is neither a good or bad thing. This is just a simple observation. I really liked his philosophy on the use of the folding blade for self-defense by targeting the attacking appendage and leg in order to neutralize your opponent's attack rendering you safe, rather than outright killing your attacker, which may or may not be the preferred response.

If you pay attention to Mr. Janich's reasoning for this self-defense principle, it makes very good sense for most situations you probably would be confronted with. However, I am personally a strong believer in the following philosophy that was taught to me when I was younger. Although this pertained to firearms at the time, it is just as relevant for edged weapons.

"If you carry a gun, you better be prepared to use it. If you pull a gun on a man you better be prepared to shoot him. If you shoot a man, you better be willing to kill him."

The techniques that Mr. Janich demonstrates in this DVD are very simple to execute, although obviously you would want to put in the time and effort to practice them in order to become proficient in their use. The concepts and principles are sound and the instruction is top notch. Of particular note was the demonstration by Mr. Janich of an average folding blade and what it can due as far as cutting damage on a pork roast. I found it to be quite impressive and very noteworthy. Kudos!

On a humorous note, I really liked the end credits where he referred to his assistant as a.k.a. "meat puppet." That really cracked me up and I am still chuckling about that as I write this review. Perhaps that would also make a great saying on a t-shirt, "Wanna Be My Meat Puppet?" Ha Ha Ha

Here are a few additional items that I find very valuable for anyone interested in knife fighting and/or knife defense.

Knife Fighting: A Practical Course

Knives, Knife Fighting, And Related Hassles: How To Survive A Real Knife Fight

Logic of Steel: A Fighter's View of Blade and Shank Encounters

Surviving Armed Assaults: A Martial Artists Guide to Weapons, Street Violence, and Countervailing Force

Contemporary Knife Targeting: Modern Science Vs. W.E. Fairbairn's Timetable of Death

I highly recommend this instructional DVD and I am so impressed with the quality of instruction in it that I am going to add the other knife DVD's from Michael Janich to my personal library.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great intro to knife training, November 17, 2008
By Bryan (Indiana) - See all my reviews
Michael Janich's books and videos are some of my favorites for edged weapon work. This one is no exception.

This video is an introduction to Michael Janichs edge weapons martial art called Martial Blade Concepts. He explains some of his background in Philipino martial arts that focused on the blade, and how he adapted those to more modern, and practical concepts.

He goes through the basics of his program, and gives you some of his training drills. He then goes through attacks, defenses and various patterns he teaches. He also covers some of the legal aspects of using a knife for personal defense, something most knife arts do not teach.

His drills are some of the better "live" drills I've seen for weapons work. The only thing he doesn't do, is pad up and spar with training knives to show his system in action. However, others have done so and most of his system works well under pressure.

I highly recommend pretty much everything he offers.
