More About the Author

Stan Lee is a man who needs no introduction. Nevertheless: Having begun his career with wartime Timely Comics and staying the course throughout the Atlas era, Stan the Man made comic-book history with Fantastic Four #1, harbinger of a bold new perspective in story writing that endures to this day. With some of the industry's greatest artists, he introduced hero after hero in Incredible Hulk, Amazing Spider-Man, X-Men and more -- forming a shared universe for rival publishers to measure themselves against. After an almost literal lifetime of writing and editing, Lee entered new entertainment fields and earned Marvel one opportunity after another. He remains one of Marvel's best-known public representatives.

4.0 out of 5 stars silver age fine art, August 12, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: MARVEL MASTERWORKS: Captain America, Vol. 4 (Hardcover)
There is much beautiful illustration to be savored in this book. While I will concede that the stories and story-telling in this book lost some speed in comparison to the earlier Lee/Kirby issues (Kirby is phenomenally dynamic!), and even compared to the Steranko issues immediately prior, the stories here are descent representations for the era. The art and the character are the main attractions here. If you enjoy Captain America and you enjoy good art, you will be happy to see this edition features great drawing in panel to panel art for full stories by John Buscema, John Romita and Gene Colon. Ironically, the weakest art of the book is probably the cover. This edition, for me, is definitely a part of Cap's heyday. If you enjoyed Buscema's run on the first 8 issues of Sub-Mariner and his Sixties run in the Avengers and the Silver Surfer, Colan's work on Daredevil, and Romita's work on early Spider-man, this edition is a treasure-trove with which you may not be familar. This is a Silver Age gem.

1.0 out of 5 stars After 3, the deluge., June 5, 2009
This review is from: MARVEL MASTERWORKS: Captain America, Vol. 4 (Hardcover)
I was present at the creation, bought Fantastic Four #1 at a newsstand, had a letter in #4, and read every Marvel comic for several years.

You can't go home again. But you can, at some level, enjoy Marvel Masterworks when the scripts are by Stan Lee. Excelsior!

But there was no reason for them to continue these books after Stan Lee stopped writing them. And there is no reason to buy this book.
