I have taken a recent interest in Mary Magdelene. The Intimate Portrait programs were a series of biographies aired on Lifetime, I think, a few years ago. Like the programs aired on A&E & now, the Biography Channel, Intimate Portrait addresses lives in single or double hour airtime.

This program addresses the life of one of the disciples of Jesus Christ, or Joshua ben Joseph, as he would have been known in Nazareth. Was the relationship between them more than just friends, or teacher/student? Nobody can say for certain. If she had been a male, she might have even been one of the Apostles. Were she & Jesus lovers? Again, nobody knows for certain. Maybe, maybe not. She was called Magdelene, because she came from the town of Magdala; she could even have had some financial resources, that could have been used for the benefit of Jesus & his group of followers. Evidently, she and Peter had some disagreements - perhaps becuse he felt Jesus loved her more than he loved the apostles. She might even have been given the opportunity to teach & preach (women didn't do that sort of thing back then).

If you are looking for another version of a biography of Mary Magdelene, get this video & view it; it's worth the time & money.

Released in '06 `Mary Magdalen An Intimate Portrait' is only 43 minutes in length making it to my knowledge the shortest documentary on Mary Magdalene available. Obviously because of the brevity of time it simply cannot cover as much ground as some of the other 90 minute plus documentaries available but it is still a good watch nonetheless.

What sets this feature apart from other documentaries is its divergence into the contemporary realm to explore the polarization of society and its acceptance, or refusal to embrace a Magdalen divested of the traditional prostitute persona. It clearly defines the boundary between those holding on to Magdalene the harlot versus the ever-growing group proclaiming Magdalene to be the manifestation of the Divine Feminine and the counterbalance to masculine spirituality.

My Rating: Short but worthwhile; -4 Stars-.
