I bought one of each.

Marella (this page). Has the flip lid (like the Brita), and the same non-removable countdown timer as the Brita (it looks absolutely identical).
Elemaris. Has the pour through lid, and a higher quality removable water usage meter. Note, the Marella meter is based on time. The Elemaris meter is based on actual water flowing through the jug, which means you're much more likely to replace the filter when needed. The Elemaris also has a nice rubber push button, unlike the finger nail killing button on the Marella and Brita.

When I love about the Elemaris is that you can pop out the meter prior to washing, either by hand or in the dishwasher. The Marella, just like the Brita, doesn't do this. Which means in a few months, it will be soaked, and broken. And that's exactly what happened to the three Brita jugs I owned.

Summary: Buy the Elemaris XL. It's the better Mavea jug.

Recently I replaced my original PUR pitcher with this very attractive Mavea pitcher and I'm happy with it. The water tastes as good, if not a little better, than my PUR-filtered water. I have no way to run a scientific test on the two pitchers, just going by my taste buds, and that's what matters to me.

My city water comes from a reservoir that has an algae problem every summer, and this year it started earlier than normal; the chemicals used to treat the algae taste so bad I gag when brushing my teeth. This filter removes the bad taste, along with many other chemicals that are present in our water. It does NOT remove the fluoride though.

The pitcher is constructed similar to the PUR with the double chamber. This is the cheaper model of the Mavea pitchers, and this one has a timer on top; it keeps track of time only, not how many pitchers of water have been filtered through. To get a pitcher that keeps track of the amount of water filtered through, you would have to purchase the Elemaris model. In either pitcher model the battery lasts around 5 years according to the literature, but it's not replaceable, so the pitcher needs replaced every 5 years, if you want to continue to use the gauge.

I love the flip-up lid to refill the water; the only time you have to remove the entire lid is to replace the filter or wash out the pitcher. Initially the entire lid is hard to snap on to the pitcher, but with the tight fit that will mean that it won't come off when pouring.

This does fit inside my refrigerator door, but I have the extra large shelves that hold gallon jugs. Not so sure it will fit if you have smaller shelves in your door.

PROS:
Best-tasting water I've ever had.

Nice looking design.

The 8-cup capacity prevents from having to refill after one or two glasses of water - convenient.

Does not drip while pouring when unfiltered water area is filled - many other water filters cannot handle pouring while filtering is taking place.

CONS:
The filter replacement meter does not gauge actual water usage. It is based solely on time, so if you don't use it as often as a family of 4 (that is the manufacturer's metric), then it will want you to replace the filter way more often than necessary.

Not only does the water TASTE great, but I know with the multi-system filtration system that it's healthy for me, too. The only thing I'm NOT relying on is the measuring system they use to say when to change the filter. Since it's essentially based on how much water gets filtered, I simply keep a post-it posted in my kitchen and keep track myself when I've filtered 40 gallons (that is, 80 pitchers-full) of water and change it then.

There's nothing wrong with the way my tap water tastes, but I switched to filtered bottled water anyway because it tastes better. Well, surprise, surprise. This German designed Mavea water filtration pitcher makes my tap water taste better than any bottled water I've ever had. It's easy to use, it lets you know when it's time to change filters, and it looks great, so I leave it out to show it off. Trust me, the plastic is of such high quality it looks like crystal. I've heard the reason the water tastes so good is because the filter is impregnated with silver, and I do remember ancient Romans lined their water pipes with silver or gold to purify their drinking water. Now I know why. This Mavea is a great value and a great water filter.

Everyone should drink filtered water. It's like having an insurance policy against harmful chemicals. In this day and age, with water becoming ever more scarce and concentrated, it's ever more likely for your water source to become contaminated. This pitcher filters out most of those contaminants. Also, studies show that a lot of bottled water has more contaminants than regular tap water and that chemicals can leach from the plastic into the water contained therein, so buying water in a plastic bottle is not advisable. Not only that, bottled water is expensive and the plastic ends up in our landfills where it stays for generations. The Mavea Filtration Picture is an intelligent solution to provide safe, potable water.
I live on a farm and get my water from a well, once it's run through this pitcher it is pure and delectable. I use it to fill my glass water bottles so that I never run out of safe water. I highly recommend this pitcher no matter where you get your water. Get the pitcher! Get the picture? P.S. This is not a paid advertisement.
