First, let me start off by saying this thing does work as it should. It pushes out a thin ribbon of butter, even cold. It's actually pretty neat to just pull it out of the fridge, pop the cap, twist, and there's a thin sheet of butter which will melt immediately on hot food, and back in the fridge in seconds. No more butter dishes, no slicing, no dropped pats!
It's made of heavy plastic, so seems to be pretty sturdy and I imagine it'll last a while. After I bought it, however, I did see one review which said the opaque white version was better, but I do like the fact that you can see how much butter is left on this one. It stores laying down or standing, which saves room in the fridge.
Now, the other side of the coin. After researching several of these, this seemed to be the one with most positive reviews. However, as the description says materials are plastic and stainless steel, I was expecting it had a blade, which this one does not, as I found out later . The description is accurate, but misleading, as the only stainless steel part is one single screw.
This works by cold extrusion, meaning it compresses the butter stick until it's forced out a slit at the bottom of the tube in the shape of a ribbon. While it's great on food, it also means 3 unexpected things; 1) you have to be standing by with a knife to separate the ribbon from the dispenser, 2) it continues to extrude until you back off the compression screw, and 3) since it uses compression, butter is smashed all over and behind the screw "foot" which pushes it out. (I have not tried to clean it, but I'd think it would be a nightmare).
Again, it does work and I'm satisfied with it, but had I known these inconveniences beforehand, I might have tried on of the other versions first.

Just the right thickness of butter for putting on toast or a bagel so that it melts without having to destroy the bread while spreading it with a knife. I keep mine in the fridge which makes the butter a bit stiff due to that whole physics thing, but it still works well, just a little slower. I've read reviews where people say their butter mill breaks. I'm pretty sure those people are morons. I mean it's obvious that the thing isn't made of titanium. Apply a little pressure to the butter by twisting the screw and watch the ribbon come out. When it stops coming out, apply more pressure. If you screw the thing down like you're fracking, I imagine it'll break.

We got our first butter butler when my father-in-law lived with us at age 84. This device helped him dispense his own butter. I love the measuring lines on the edge to help you determine how much you are using.

The butter comes out in a ribbon, easy to spread or melting on my ear of corn with ease.

the standard stick of butter will not fit in here. The red plastic has a dye in it that actually comes out in the butter. I suggest if you buy this you wash it really good first.

Will not work with refrigerated butter as stated, tried using right out of refrigerator and end blew out. Would probably be fine if butter not refrigerated.

I bought this so I could leave my butter in the fridge and then use it immediately. It was ok for about 1 stick of butter before it broke on the second stick of butter.

Fabulous product. Works on both cold and warm butter. Cant imagine why anyone wrote a bad review.
a lot of people complained theirs broke?? I owned the pure white one, which was very well made.
Mine broke after 2 yrs and thats only because my daughter dropped it out of the fridge.
highly recommended. You wont ever need a knife to spead your butter again

**update spoke with the manufacturer.
Apparently mine was the white one which is made in the usa. The red one is made in china that may be why there are so many different mixed reviews.
I recommend the White one, it is fabulous, cant tell you about the red one.
