Simply, beautifully displays the power of percussion,

In 1980 this was a breakthrough album, consisting of dynamic performances by master drummer / percussionists showcasing warmth, humor, intensity, and picture-painting. "World Music", American jazz, future primitive music fusing traditions of innovation. The melodic lines of vibes, marimba and xylophone blend with the power of timpanis, drumset, congas, claves and the rest of the M'Boom artillery. If you like Santana, Spyro Gyra, Gary Burton, Airto, Mickey Hart, or Combustible Edison you should check out this album. It's a gem. By the way, M'Boom is a large group of fine musicians organized by Max Roach -- it isn't Max on his own.

Creativity at its Best!,

This recording is an example of great minds/musicians given free reign to explore their creative boundaries. The astounding use of such varied percussion instruments from the musical saw to the timpani playing the melody on Monk's "Epistrophy" is not only musical but inspiring. This recording features some of the greats of Jazz and World Drumming. Freddie Waits, Joe Chambers, Roy Brooks and Fred King to name a few, all shine on these tracks. I highly recommend this for those of you who are adventureous and into creative music. I had the great pleasure to see this group at S.O.B.'s in New York in the early '80's and they were wonderful!

This is a totally brilliant display of percussion invention--subtle, lyrical, complex, varied. And it sounds BEAUTIFUL from beginning to end.

A monsterpiece,

I like everything about this album, because everything about this album is wonderful. Each of the tracks has its own distinct personality -- more personality, in fact, than any real person you're bound to meet. And indeed, this album will prove a better friend to you than any human being ever will.

I've owned this cd for over 14 years and I just can't recommend it enough. The sounds, production and vibe on this album are as relevant now as when this was originally released in 1979. Max's ensemble creates the most original ethereal, world/afro inspired music you've probably never heard, and it's really hard for to me to imagine anyone not liking this cd because it is so surprising and seminal. A diamond in the rough.
