Atlanta...that's where I stay....classic rhymes!!!,

This review is from: MC Shy D - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
This is a real groundbreaking compilation that every hip hop fan should digest in full. You have to realize that MC SHY D was the first of his kind. You have to credit him with the fact that he was the first rapper from the south who had some originality. His skills, sound and style predated 2 LIVE CREW, of whom were his label mates.
He gives props to Atlanta in his music constantly -- he wasn't from the East Coast, which during his time, dominated hip hop. It is important to note that his DJ Mike Fresh, had an incredible amount of talent. He could scratch (listen to "I Will Go Off Part II"), throw in dope samples (like in "Atlanta, That's Where I Stay"), and was a huge factor in the success of the immortal jams that this release contain! The beats have heavy, peppy bass with fast 16th note hi-hat taps, almost like a pre-booty bass feel. SHY D himself usually sounds like he's about 16 years old. MC SHY D, a figure that is often overlooked in the annuals of hip hop, who deserves way more credit than he gets. Get this release and get educated!!!

On his Greatest Hits, I was expecting to get a clean CD of songs that were taken from the original masters or reel-to-reels, but the first 9 songs were recorded off of vinyl.
I gave this CD 2 Stars because you can hear all of the snap, crackle, and pops that expect to hear on old records. If this might be a concern of yours, then buyer(s) beware...

I have MC Shy D's first OG on cassette. In the shower, I still bump his muzik and re-live the old skool lyrics I grew up to when I was a kid. I'm now 24 and still enjoy listening to it as much as I did back then; even more now cuz I can appreciate the muzik and dig what it is he's rappin' about.

I've been looking for this cd for years. I talked to SHY D(Peter)a couple of years ago and asked him to come out with a greatest hits album. At the time he wasn't planning on it, but i'm glad he listened and finaly released this album of old school Bass hits even though it's still hard to find. Thank you Shy!

I didn't know they were still around--I knew them back when!,
This review is from: MC Shy D - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
I just gave the CD three stars as an even review; I've never heard a recording of theirs. Funny thing, though: Back in 1988 or '89, I met them (there were two of them). I lived in Atlanta, and my mother's friend and roommate was either dating one of them or good friends with one of them. Anyhow, they came over to the house one evening, and they met my mother and I. I, about four or five at the time, had no idea who they were (Musically, I still don't--I just looked their names up on a whim after remembering old songs I liked; I had no idea they had enough songs for a "Greatest Hits" CD). I had never heard their music (although they brought their album and may have autographed it), and didn't care to. I didn't like rap, and I guess I had my head on straight for a kid, because I still don't and most likely never will. But they were very nice guys. I remember I was reading my favorite children's book when they arrived, it was called "Just Like Me," and about a pair of twin sisters. And I remember while one talked to my mother and her friend, the other came over to the table and read the book aloud with me. Such nice people; I'm glad to hear they're still doing their thing.
