I had already been studying the 70-646 before picking this book up but I had some holes in my knowledge. This book filled in all the holes and helped me pass the 70-646 on the first try. It's laid out in a simple to follow format, is easy to read, and covers all the objectives.

As with all the Sybex test prep books I've seen lately, it has a wealth of practice test questions at the end of every chapter and on the CD test engine that really helped me test my knowledge before taking the live exam. The questions helped me identify my weak areas, and the relevant information was easy to find and understand in the book.

Although it wasn't available when I purchased this book, I've found that you can buy it as part of a full kit MCITP: Windows Server 2008 Server Administrator Certification Kit for the 70-640, 70-642 and 70-646 exams.

I'm am an IT Server Admin. I bought this book to prepare for the 70-646 Exam.

It's an "ok" book but it's not ordered very well. Going through the lab exercises you'll find that they are just out of order. It could hav been a lot better if they would have changed the order of the chapters.

If you've got a good understanding of what Windows Servers can do and experience, then this book should work for you, if you are completely new to windows servers, I wouldn't use this book.

This is a great book for newbies and a quick reference for experienced admins. This doesn't cover everything and isn't the holy grail for Server 2008, but for the items listed in the Table of Contents... it covers them well enough for you to understand it along with examples and review questions. For an overall understanding you can also get the other 2 MCTS books 70-640 and 70-642.

I used this book solely for my first attempt at the 70-646 exam, and I found it to be inadequate with respect to Server 2008 R2 and Virtualization. You will be better off starting with this book and then using the MCITP Self Paced Training Kit for this exam by Ian McLean. Ian McLean's book reinforced what I learned in this one, but it also covered the Server 2008 R2 features which this book did not. Also, this book didn't cover virtualization at all, but the one by Ian McLean did.

With these 2 books combined, I passed my exam on the 2nd try.

"If you want to pass the Microsoft Server 2008 exams, you need to install and work with Server 2008. No surprise there. I'm well aware that everyone doesn't have a spare server lying around to play with, but you can create your own lab environment for free on your own computer. "

You really needed to remember that when going through WDS section. This comes WAY to early in the book, this should come in after they have gone over setting up DHCP and DNS servers. Also remember that many people will be using a VM in order to build the customer reference PC.
