1.0 out of 5 stars Incomplete and misleading
I concur with other reviews of this book. Not only is it incomplete but also misleading (e.g. ADO Static cursors are NOT read only). Many of the sample questions are ambiguous or have incorrect answers. Not a good use of your money!

Chapters 3 and 4 have two more answers than questions in the review questions section. The first two answers for each chapter can be ignored. (ie. Question 1 corresponds to answer 3, 2 to 4, 3 to 5, etc) Yes there are fill in the blank questions...why is this a problem? There are a couple of questions with incorrect answers...but you just paid for a book containing 600 review questions - stop whining.

I've used this series and the free transcender demos as the primary source for my studying. In that way I have completed about 6-700 questions prior to the actual exam. I'm 3/4 done my MCSD and have passed every exam on the first try.

My congratulations to the author and publisher for offering a cheap book to complement a student's studying efforts. There should be no complaints about this book...it delivers exactly what a book this price should. But if you want to pass, you have to use the product. I think the other reviewers expected they could read this book and pass (I'm assuming they didn't pass)...but you didn't simply read a book prior to your drivers license exam did you?

I took the test and passed 6/30/00 and used this book to help prepare. It's a good thing that this wasn't the only book I used. I won't repeat the previous reviews complaining of the lack of information, inaccurate information, and horribly mismatched answer keys (alhtough its all true), but I will give you an idea as to whether this book is right for you or not. The information that it does go over is explained very well so if VB is very foreign to you, this book might be a good one to start with. (...but don't think you're ready for the test when you finish) There are also a lot of review question which do a good job of hammering points home. You can usually figure out where the answer keys are wrong so if you're willing to put up with it the review questions are a good reinforcement. At any rate 2 stars. It isn't a complete waste of a book for a VB beginner. However, the editor was apparently on vacation prior to the books being published and it does not remotely prepare you for the MCP certification test.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible, July 9, 1999
This review is from: MCSD Test Success: Visual Basic 6 Desktop (Paperback)
This book starts off with two example questions on the inside of the front cover. Both questions have the wrong page references for their answers. So before even getting to the first page there are mistakes. The answers to chapter three do not correlate to the questions. Some of the review questions that require one or two word answers are so general that there could be ten or more correct answers.

This book is supposed to be an exam prep book. The exam is made up of multiple-choice questions. Why then does Michael McKelvy average forty or more true/false and fill-in-the-missing-word questions per chapter and only fifteen multiple-choice questions per chapter?

Proof reading the book by somebody at Sybex would have been a nice touch.

Guys... This book is not directed to be the main study source for the 70-176 exam (you may apply that to the other Test Success books) . You should have read the Study Guide from the same publisher (or you may use another one) and then use this book to review your study... DON'T TAKE THIS BOOK AND ITS SERIES AS MAIN STUDY REFERENCE or you'll have big possibility to get shocked in the middle of the exam!... After all, I will return to you after the exam to update this review! wish me luck.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not the book for the test., September 13, 2000
This review is from: MCSD Test Success: Visual Basic 6 Desktop (Paperback)
This book will NOT ready you for the MCSD exam 70-176. It helped me with about two questions on the test. The book does not cover important objectives and issues that you'll face on the actual test. This is a beginner's book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Barely touches the surface, August 25, 1999

I just passed my 70-176 exam today, and it wasn't because of this book! This book is a decent introduction to some of the items on the test, but far from being detailed enough to give you enough information to pass the test. Your best bet is simply using the MSDN Library alongside the Transcender exams. Don't waste your money on this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible - Test Questions do not match Answers for test, July 6, 1999
This review is from: MCSD Test Success: Visual Basic 6 Desktop (Paperback)
The worst VB Study book I have ever purchased. No Quality Assurance for the chapter test (which is the most important thing in the book). Chapter 3 has 2 more answers than questions, and the ones that are there are wrong.

Quality Assurance was having a very bad day when they published this book, and should have spent many more hours making sure that the chapter test were useful and more importantly correct.

This is egg on the face of Michael McKelvy (Author) and Cybex for publishing such bad material with out checking it first.

Would not recommend for anyone seriously studying for the test.

I have purchased both books in the set and can only hope that the 2nd one is better than this one.
