Focus on Command-line while exam is GUI,
By
This review is from: MCSE Administering SQL Server 7 Exam Cram (Exam: 70-028) (Paperback)
Pathetic! Hey Garbus! Did you take the same test everybody else did? You focus primaily on syntax. I had a couple of them. You MENTION the GUI applications that use the Stored Procedures. That's what's on the exam! The SP's aren't on the exam. Sure, I can figure out what you are writing about but its an exam CRAM not a "here-is-the-most-efficient-way-to-administer-SQL-Server" lesson from your classes. Hey, guy, if you prefer to work with command-line. Go back to MS-DOS.Do NOT buy book! If you want to cram goto (pun intended): http://leuthard.ch/mcse/braindumps.shtml The Dumps there are great! BTW, I have used Exam Cram for every exam that I have taken (6) and passed. Loved them like a friend with the answer key. No, I don't have the key. This book was pathetic. (The NT Server 4.0 Enterprise was OK.) Enough said.

I question whether the authors took the beta exam or the live exam. This book is so heavy on syntax that it completely misses the mark. While it is good to know the syntax and how to do things in query analyzer, this is not what the test is about. None of the GUI tools are covered. This book really falls down when it comes to questions given on the live exam from the perspective of "You're the consultant on site. How would you do this? Or this is what was done, will it work?" If you want to study for the exam then I suggest the following: Use McSe : Sql Server 7 Administration: Training Guide : Exam : 70-028 (The Training Guide Series) ~ Brad McGehee, et al / Hardcover / Published 1999 OR MCSE: SQL Server 7 Administration Study Guide ~ Lance Mortensen, Rick Sawtell / Hardcover / Published 1999 Use Transcender Use Books Online or better yet buy the actual documentation set. Good Luck!! Steven C. Grigsby, MCSE, MCT, MCP+I

This book represents a low point in the Exam Cram series. I have utilized six other Exam Cram books with good results in preparing for my MCSE tests. For the most part they were right on the number. However, having taken the 70-028 Administering SQL Server 7.0 test, it is apparent that the author of this book either did not take the test himself before completing the book, or simply chose to ignore the test as a benchmark of what to write about. In a word, as a test prep resource this book is a very weak presenter of what is actually encountered in Microsoft's SQL 7.0 Admin test.

The worst from Exam Cram,
By Wizgang (Seattle) - See all my reviews

I used Exam Cram to help me pass 5 of my MCSE tests, with great success. Unfortunatly, this one really let me down! This book totally misses any and all of what is covered on 70-028. I ended up reading the Sybex book in order to actually pass this test. If you are looking for a book to help you pass test 70-028, get the Sybex book, not this one. I hope that The Corolis group decided to update this book with some real testing research!

Administering sql server 7 exam cram,

The worst exam cram in the universe. I don't think these guys have any idea about the test or how to prepare for it. Don't even waste your breath asking for the title at the book store, and if somebody hands you a copy for free simply tell them that they can throw it out themselves.

***** Many Errors,

This review is from: MCSE Administering SQL Server 7 Exam Cram (Exam: 70-028) (Paperback)
I finished this book yesterday and took (and passed) the cooresponding MCDBA exam. I also have over 6 years experience using SQL Server both as a developer and an administrator. I found that there are many errors in this book. Even the sample test in the back has wrong answers (look at questions 7 or 30 as an example). It also dwells on numerous details that were not part of the exam questions I had. Specifically, the Replication chapter.THIS IS NOT THE FIRST AND LAST BOOK YOU'LL NEED TO READ .............

Please do yourself a favor - Don't buy this book...,

I used the Exam Cram series to study for my MCSE tests. All 6 books were very close to the tests and were very well written. I would highly recommend those books. Then came my MCSE+I. I choose SQL, and this Exam Cram book based on the previous Exam Cram books. This book was horrible. From a "technical review" standpoint, aside from the test, it was also horrible. It lacked any structure, and had no correlation to the test questions what-so-ever. This book was written simply by cutting and pasting every possible command line statement and all possible syntax and parameters/switches that relate to these commands. It was like reading the appendix to the SQL user's manual. The test did not have a single command line question - it was all GUI, or rights or replication methodologies and design philosphies. I can not see how this book could possibly be helpful for either the test or the real world. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere... Thank God I had used the Transcender exam as a backup!

One of the worst technical books I've ever read,
By A Customer

Shame on you Jeff Garbus for passing off this ...as an exam cram. NEWS FLASH: the exam is GUI-based, not command line. No one cares about SQL or ISQL nuances that are no longer true and have nothing to do with passing the exam. Modern admins use the GUI tools...

It's a shame that I waited until the afternoon after I took the test to read these reviews, much less after I bought it. Then I wouldn't have wasted so much time last night going over stored procedures. I did pass the test, but especially in the case of replication, I felt it was in spite of this book, not because of it.
