2.0 out of 5 stars GOOD INTRO--NOT USEFUL FOR EXAM PREP
Possibly a good intro for a newbee, but not detailed enough to be useful for exam prep. Practice tests not rigorous enough.

Minor errors indicate sloppy proofreading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great discussion of concepts, July 19, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: MCSE Administering SQL Server 7 Exam Prep (Exam: 70-028) (Hardcover)
The discussion of "core" concepts in this book was extremely well written and insightful. This is definitely not a stand-alone book for those interested in the inner workings of SQLServer as they relate to designing and optimizing databases. Rather, it gives a great foundation for moving on to those subjects through clear coverage of the data storage and architecture models as well as many of the great monitoring tools available to SQLServer7. All-in-all, this book is a great starting place for building an understanding of SQLServer and its underlying architecture.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!, July 13, 2000
This review is from: MCSE Administering SQL Server 7 Exam Prep (Exam: 70-028) (Hardcover)
This book more than prepared me to take my SQL server exam. Not only that, I use this book on an almost daily basis during my day-to-day operations of managing several SQL servers as the backend of a major e-commerce web-site.

I recommend this book to anyone who wishes not only to pass the exam, but just to learn SQL server or to have an invaluable resource to be used on the job. A big thumbs up to Brian Talbert for providing a clear, concise roadmap for those of us wishing to attain the highly lauded MCSE. I will impatiently await your next book.

This book explains SQL admin stuff in good detail and step by step. It almost covers all the exam material (except full-text search).

If you feel you miss something for specified topic even after reading this book, review that topic in SQL book online.

This book + review the SQL Book online = Pass this exam

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!, January 15, 2001

Great book! This book provided EVERYTHING I need to pass the exam and also provide lots of real world advice. I think this book would stand alone as a general SQL Server administration guide. The practice questions were right on the money!

5.0 out of 5 stars MCSE Administering SQL Server 7 Exam Prep by Brian Talbert, March 4, 2001

I thanked god for this book! I took the SQL Admin 5 day Microsoft training course. It was no help at all. I purchased the SQL Exam Cram book, but very little help. This was my last exam to pass the MCSE course and I thought I had made a big mistake in taking this elective until I found Administering SQL Server 7 by Exam Prep. I am now an MCSE. Thank you Brian Talbert.

1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT USE THIS FOR A MCSE/MCDBA STUDY GUIDE, November 5, 2001

This review is from: MCSE Administering SQL Server 7 Exam Prep (Exam: 70-028) (Hardcover)
If you are planning to use this book as a preparation to take MCSE OR MCDBA exam, please do not use this. Its contents are basic SQL 7 material. Those who reviewed this book and said the exam questions were similar to practice questions in the book are simply lying! If you are studying for an exam, you are better of with Microsoft training kit. The questions in the exams are usually vastly different than anything you see in the practice questions in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars NICE OVERVIEW OF SQL SERVER ADMIN CONCEPTS, December 17, 2008
This review is from: MCSE Administering SQL Server 7 Exam Prep (Exam: 70-028) (Hardcover)
I've worked with Mr. Talbert for a number of years and have to say, he knows his stuff. His writing and communication skills are excellent, and this shines through in his published Exam Prep book: "Administering SQL Server 7". I used this book to prepare for my Microsoft SQL 7 Admin exam, and I passed with flying colors. Not so sure you can still write this exam here in 2008, but for some great nostalgic reading jump on this jem!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Exam review, November 28, 2001

Even more than the book for the Database design test, this will help you narrow down the material needed for the exam. If it's in this book, it's likely to be on this test. Not to be confused with a book for learning to be a DBA (an absolutely huge area of study), it is targeted for the exam. To pass the test, it should be read in conjunction with other more comprehensive books. Having passed the SQL 6.5 exam, I didn't bother with this book... and failed. I had studied the wrong things. 2 weeks reviewing on only the subjects in this book, and I passed easily.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: MCSE Administering SQL Server 7 Exam Prep (Exam: 70-028) (Hardcover)
An excellent author, who ought to find another publisher! Lots of typo's, which make the book less than professional. Content very good and thorough, however - if Coriolis would only take advantage of some of the new, fancy word processors that make corrections! The exam questions are a disaster! Again, content is good, but obviously it was not proofread by anyone, and it contains some glaring errors. Considering what other texts are available, it is still one of the best - albeit sloppily done.
