The book is a 'Must-Have',
This review is from: MCSE Fast Track: Networking Essentials (Paperback)
This is one of the best books I have read in preparation for the Networking Essentials Exam. The tear out booklet is amazing and was a great help the night before the exam. This book uses a lot of excellent illustrations and examples to explain concepts and ideas. The 'Key Concepts' section in each chapter focus on important points to remember for the exam. Using this book helped me pass this exam on first try. I highly recommend this book to anyone preparing for exam 70-073. This is the only book you will need to buy!

Excellent and Very Concise - The ONLY One You Need,
By joels@galef.org (Los Angeles) - See all my reviews
This review is from: MCSE Fast Track: Networking Essentials (Paperback)
This book helped me pass the NE Exam with a 933 after less than 2 weeks of studying. It is concise and it offers a quick-format review of all the pertinent topics at the end. The practice test may have an error on a question about star-bus networking topology(I'm not sure). Otherwise, this book is flawless.

Required reading!!,

If your employer is paying for your certification, skip the self-study route and spend a month in classes learning this stuff. On the other hand, if you are like me and don't have an employer to foot the bill (and can't afford a month of down-time), then this book is THE answer. If you read this book from cover to cover and cannot pass the Microsoft exam, then you really should look for another line of work. I read the book, took the exam, then went back right afterwards to find out how much of the exam I had just taken was in the book. Its here, baby, its all here.

Recommended for Network+ study as well,

I read a review of the new Network+ exam from CompTIA, and this book was listed as being one you could use in studying for it since no books on the new exam were out yet. Skeptically, I plunked down the money, read the book, and took the exam. I passed with 95%!

I found this book a excellent source of information to pass the test. If you are not sure about which MCSE test you should take first, my recomendation is read this book and then take the NT server teset. It will give you a feel for the exam process and help you get started.

One stop resource!,

I probably have every Networking Essentials book put out - Sybex, New Riders, Microsoft Press, etc. I bought them to pass the exam, but quickly discarded them as being either too much information to digest, or too error-prone.While on the verge of giving up, I stumbled across this title. I immediately found that it contains no fluff, just concise information on what you need to know. All the other books are now in the trash.

Concise and direct.,

When I first saw this book, the size threw me off - I doubted that all the basics of networking could be discussed in under 300 pages. When I started reading the book, however, I was surprised at how well it was actually done. Most of the basics that administrators already know have been removed, and what remains is a very concentrated collection of what was on the exam I took.

Good info, but not for passing the exam.,

Unfortunately, I had to take this exam twice. So, be ware, do not depend on this book for the MCP exam. I am wondering about other people who previewed this book and said that they passed the exam using it???I do not recommend this book for those who are planning to take the MCP exam. This book covers almost 50 % of the material of the exam. There are some poor parts in it which represent some objectives of the exam. These poor parts are: troubleshooting, performance enhancement, topologies, and protocols. From experience, I can tell you the following points are mentioned heavily in the two exams and were not slightly covered by this book which are: *Troubleshooting: It does not tell you about the way to low-level troubleshoot a bus topology networks, which include measuring resistance in different parts of the network . *Performance Enhancement: nothing about window size and packet size for TCP/IP protocol. *Topologies: Nothing about mesh topologies. *Protocols: Nothing about the TCP/IP suit and IPX/SPX suit. It does not mention which protocols are under these Protocols and to which layer do they belong to. Besides, the sample test at the end of the book is silly and does not represent real MCP exams.

A winner on all counts.,

This book is fantastic and it covers in its pages what most books do in 600+ pages of fluff. The advantage is you don't get lost in the influx of information. I highlighted the book from front to back, then purchased the Transcender study engine - every question in that engine was answered in this book!
