MCSE/MCSA Training Guide (70-216): Windows 2000 Network Infrastructure, Second Edition is the perfect study guide to help readers pass one of the four core exams in Microsoft's 2000 certification program and an elective exam in the popular new MCSA program. This certification exam measures the ability to install, manage, monitor, configure, and troubleshoot DNS, DHCP, Remote Access, Network Protocols, IP Routing, and WINS in a Windows 2000 network infrastructure. In addition, this test measures the skills required to manage, monitor, and troubleshoot Network Address Translation and Certificate Services. Readers preparing for this exam find the Training Guide series to be the most successful self-study tool in the market. This book is their one-stop shop because of its teaching methodology, the accompanying testing software, and superior Web site support at www.quepublishing.com/certification.

The CD features PrepLogic™ Practice Tests, Preview Edition. This product includes one complete PrepLogic Practice Test with approximately the same number of questions found on the actual vendor exam and full, detailed explanations of correct and incorrect answers.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The author's approach to this topic is clean and concise, and his organization of the text makes a complex subject easier to comprehend and implement. -- Rick Kingslan, Solutions Consultant, Rainier Technology

This should be the only [book] you need to pass the 70-216 exam. This is one you'll want to keep as a reference for Windows 2000 network administration. -- Tom Sandberg, Toyota Motor Sales USA --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

From the Author

Amazon says I have 250 words to convince you to buy this book. Having invested most of my free time for the last year writing this book, 250 seems like an awfully small number but I'll give it my best shot. First, I'm going to be honest with you. I cannot promise that if you buy this book you will pass the exam. I can promise you that this book contains the information and exercises you need to really understand a Windows 2000 network infrastructure. If you understand the information presented, and get some hands on time, you will do well on the exam. I will also promise you that this book is as readable as I think an exam guide can be.

Recognizing that Microsoft is moving away from the memorize and repeat exam questions, I have included lots of hands-on exercises and real world examples. This may be the most useful content in the book. Since my main job is implementing networks and systems, that's the kind of information I find the most useful in the books I buy. And just between you and me, I am pretty picky about the books I will pay for. As I rapidly run out of words, I would like to leave you with this final piece of information. I have recommended this book to friends working on their MCSE's. I really believe this is a good exam guide. I hope you will find it useful in your exam efforts, and in your job after the exam. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not your sole reference., January 4, 2002

This book is not a bad book. It covers the topics from the Table of Contents quite well. Unfortunately, it does not cover ALL of the exam topics. Newriders is my publisher of choice for MCSE 2000. This book is the weakest link in the series so far (6 down, 1 to go, passed each exam on first attempt) To be fair to the publisher, this is probably the toughest exam of the series. Quite the skull scratcher.

My feelings about the prep books on the market for this exam leave me a bit torn. Seems reasonable that the toughest exam would cause a writer to generate a weak book, then again, wouldn't you expect the publisher to put their absolute strongest writing up against the toughest MCSE exam? I used 2 other books to prep for this exam, Exam Cram for 216, and belive it or not, Exam Cram for TCP/IP, since both the Newriders 216 book and the Exam Cram 216 book refer you to other works when it comes to covering subnetting. I guess they felt that previous books covered that material so well, that to try again would offend the gods.

My point is this: this is a tough exam, and all of the prep companies have sold us short. This is the thinnest book in each publisher's series. You might need more that one vendor's prep book for this test. Using 2 other books got me through it first time. My coworker needed 2 tries to pass. Best of luck to you. Hope this helps you in your efforts.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good book for a beginning, June 22, 2001

After going over this book and CD many times I took the 216 test. Was surprised by just how much information this book is lacking for the test. At least a quarter of my test was composed of DHCP Relay questions, so brush yourself up on it a lot since the book has nothing on the subject. Good testing otherwise!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book that I have found so far., October 6, 2000

The author keeps your attention, and he has a sense of humor. Both of these are difficult to find in a technical book.

I am very impressed with the number of hands-on exercises in the book. This allowed my to not only read about the topics, but also put them into practice. You MUST set up a small (two or three computers) home network and use this book. If you complete and understand the labs, I do not fathom how you could fail the exam.
