For those of you that harp on "Errors".... When you bring this book home and use it, will you find errors...? YES! When you bring up an NT Server box for the first time, will it have errors (A.K.A. "Bugs")....? Yes. Do you then scrap the whole NT Server 4.0 NOS and return it back to the store just because it has errors (A.K.A. "Bugs")...

I failed the exam using this book. The practice questions at the end of each chapter are not answered with explanations and some important concepts like mandatory profiles are not even mentioned. Many questions on the actual Sylvan exam exceeded the scope of this book in its explanation. The cd rom included had some questions that were precisely repeated with different answers! Though the book is quite readable, it does not use illustrations fully to show you how to access features with the graphical portion of NT. THe "MCSE Test Prep Windows NT Server 4" series by Que has much better test questions with explanations but you have to watch out because the multiple choice selections and the answer key answers with explanations are sometimes mismatched. I got 100s on all the practice exams and cd rom in this Strebe book but flunked the NT exam by Sylvan, even though this is certified by Microsoft as an adequate study guide.

3.0 out of 5 stars Try this out, October 3, 1999
I agreed with a lot readers who said that this book left many holes that need filling. However, it coverage of some topics was quite to my liking. I only used this book - no exam cram or exam notes - yet I passed the exam at first attempt, scoring 85%. You have to try and do all the exercises and I bet you, after your one hour in any of Sylvan Prometric centres you would out smiling.

1.0 out of 5 stars WARNING!! INFORMATION CONTAINED IN THIS BOOK IS INCORRECT!, June 30, 1999

This review is from: MCSE : NT Server 4 Study Guide (Hardcover)
I am a hands-on network administrator, an MCSE, MCT and teach MCSE track courses full-time. This is the first and last time I will every use a Sybex book!! There is no doubt in my mind that the authors of this book, and the other Sybex MCSE books, are doing a great injustice to those of you who are devoting a great deal of time to preparing for MSCE exams. A great deal of information in these books is outright incorrect and misleading. A good deal of the exercises in the book are incorrect and as a result do not give you the hands-on practice which is necessary. These books are not capable of preparing you for dealing with NT4 in either the real world or the exam world. I urge you not to waste your money. In my opinion, it is gross negligence for a book company to fail to make corrections as to gross inaccuracies by the time the 2nd edition is published. I was going to attempt to sell my copies at a garage sale but felt as though it would be a cruel thing to do...that is allowing these books to continue circulating in public!! My suggestion: The New Riders series of books.

"Bugs") even though it is a Great NOS (don't worry Novell - Gate's will never duplicate or even come close to NDS - the best thing that happened to NT is NDS for NT). NO, you get the most current fix for all of the errors (A.K.A. "Bugs") in what is called a Service Pack. So why would you return a Great book (actually Great Series of Books)when you can get a Service Pack for each book that will fix all of the Bugs (A.K.A "Errors")??? Answer me that!!?? Now you ask "Where can I find this Service Pack?" Well, how did you find the Service Pack for NT? That's right, you went to the source...Microsoft. So, go to the source of this book.....SYBEX. Yes, they have a site www.sybex.com/catalog/index.shtml This link is to their catalog page - click on the catagory of books - then the title of the book that you are looking for. If there are errors in the book, there will be a link to a page that lists all the corrections to these errors - the link is called "Errata". To all of you people that complain about these errors - try thinking outside of the box. Here's the bottom line - With the corrections and the addition of 2 other related topic books by Sybex - Test Success and Exam Notes - (the Transcender Tests too) this book is nothing less than a 5 star rating - clear explanations. If you want to really understand the material and get certified - you need several sources (A.K.A. these 3 books and some sort of testing software). If you think you can get certified by studying just one book, I have some beach front property in Arizona that I would like to sell you. --Jack

2.0 out of 5 stars Do not waste your money, October 1, 1999

This book lacks enough relevant information to fail the 70-067 exam. Some information is outright incorrect. The review questions are too easy.

I failed the exam twice. Then I used the e-books on the Windows NT installation CD and scored 899. This is the first and last time I will ever use a Sybex book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Where is the rest of the book???, May 18, 1999
By A Customer
Ok, people, I DID pass the server exam... JUST. The people at Sybex left out a few major things. Where is the in depth stuff you need for NetWare connectivity in particular????? I was swinging thru the exam and then I hit MS's questions on NW and came back to earth with a loud, ugly thud. 800 pages, some stuff that was not touched on in the exam and stuff in the exam that sybex chose not to include. Not a bad book, but DO NOT use it as your only reference material.

2.0 out of 5 stars Dry, Inconsistent, and Frustrating, September 11, 1999
By
This review is from: MCSE : NT Server 4 Study Guide (Hardcover)
This book does a decent job of summarizing what you need to know for the NT Server exam. However, it is so dry, has some glaring holes in coverage, and has a ton of review questions that are misleading or wrong, that I didn't recommend this to any of my friends who started their certification training. Believe it or not, by using mostly the Dummies series (yes, I said Dummies..,) the exam cram series, and Brain Dump Heaven, I was able to come out with a pretty good passing score. Final word: There are other, better "big book" study guides out there for you to purchase and study from, if that's what you're looking for. Check out the reviews on those books as well to see if they are worthwhile.

1.0 out of 5 stars This book is one of the single worst study exams out there, September 16, 1999
By A Customer
As far as MCSE Certification, this book is horrible. It is missing many topic covered by the Server exam completely, and most of the others that it does cover are incomplete. This book would be a good book for beginners wanting to adminsister a very small NT Network, however very inadequate for the test 70-067. Use Alan Carter's book -- That book is almost perfect.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good. But there was something missing., May 23, 1999
Well you can say I am a fan of Sybex books, not really, I just try to stay with my both feet on the ground, and I believe if a book helps you pass an exam, it is certainly not bad, or at least it did something right. This book is not the best I have seen from Sybex, in my opinion it left two important things. First, the answers for review questions at the end of each chapter were not explained. This is something very important when you are studying, because you want to know the WHY!!!!!, why were you right or why were you wrong. Second, I agree with another reader that said that they left the Novell section out. Believe me, even if you don't like Novell or you think is outdated, you have to know how to make it work with Windows NT and the services Windows NT has for Novell. I passed the test on my first try and 30% of my test had to do with Novell. I really didn't have a problem since I am a CNA and I do work with Novell every single day, but if you have no experience with Novell try going a little deeper on this subject.

To double check what you understood I would recommend a small book like the NT Server 4 Exam Cram from Coriolis ISBN 1-57610-190-8. This is a small simple review book that has a lot of questions with its answers, and tells you at the end of a chapter where to find more information on each subject.

Well I guess that's about it. Good luck on your test.
