Good Student Guide and Invaluable Refrence,
By A Customer
This review is from: MCSE : NT Workstation Study Guide (Hardcover)
As one of the countless professionals dealing with rolling out NT4 in the workplace
and as a student preparing for the Microsoft Exams, this book is currently never far
from my desk.
The authors manage to impart a great deal of knowledge in an easy style that is
very readable but not simplistic. The book deals with the NT in a methodical manner
and covers all aspects fairly reasonably. There are some areas that, in my opinon,
that are glossed over lightly, (eg NTFS structure and security). However, considering
that at this time the Course and Test for NT Workstation 4 has not been finalized by
Microsoft, the authors do a very creditable job.
The true test of any Study Guide is if it helps the student pass the exam - I'll keep you
posted

Not so good,
By A Customer
This review is from: MCSE : NT Workstation Study Guide (Hardcover)
This book is not for beginners. Within the first few pages of the book there were typos found. You need some experience with NT to understand the concepts because they are laid out in an unclear and unconcise format. I would not recommend relying on this book to pass the exam. This book would be good as a supplement in your studies.

Useful...but don't just depend on it!,

I used this book to prepare for the exam and...I JUST pass (700). Frankly speaking, the more difficult questions are not covered in the book and you have to guess. I think I was lucky as I guessed several of them correctly. My advise is to use this book (if you insist) and order more practise questions.

SO SO not much help,

This review is from: MCSE : NT Workstation Study Guide (Hardcover)
I bought the sybex CORE REQUIREMENTS and on the package it said "everything you need to pass the mcse exams" and the cd comes up short..the final question is about logging to NT which is covered in the first and second chapters.Where's the rest of the interaction? And yes I to have found errors-lots of them. I havent taken the test yet but I am thinking I wasted my money...because I went through the book and my retention of the material didn't last. And the worst thing of all I am NOT rich..poor even so every dollar counts, and there is no training centers in my area.

A lot of errors,

This review is from: MCSE : NT Workstation Study Guide (Hardcover)
This book contains a lot of errors. You can use this book to start with NT Workstation but is not enough to pass the MCP (MCSE) test. Don`t use this book if you don`t want to waste your time. Beware of errors!

Good ino if you can get by the errors.,

There was some good info in this book but it is filled with errors. Someone just starting out may not notice these errors and make incorrect choices on the test. Did not like the format of the answers at end of chapters, lots of trues and falses, fill in the blanks and some multiple choice. This does not really help a person to study when the test is multiple choice. They did have exercises to get you using the real product and that was helpful. All and all I felt it was just average. I say, get Transcenders and the resource kit.

I took the Workstation exam today and passed easily on my first try. I used this book for my primary study material, and while there were some errors (repeated answers on tests, a couple of places where a reference was the opposite of what it should have been), I felt that on the whole it was worth the money and definitely helped me prepare. I also used the Exam Cram book, and found errors in that as well, so I doubt that anything is perfect. I strongly recommend the transcender tests, as they are as close to the real thing as possible.

Thumbs up -- no major complains,

This review is from: MCSE : NT Workstation Study Guide (Hardcover)
Probably the best of the four Sybex core exam study guides. Well-written and thorough enough to prepare you for the exam. You'll see much of this material reproduced again & again in the Server and SITE books -- learn it the first time and you'll be able to skim through hundreds of pages in the remaining volumes.

Has Potential,
By A Customer
This review is from: MCSE : NT Workstation Study Guide (Hardcover)
Like some of the other reviewers have mentioned, there are some errors in the book that need to be fixed. I also found that While the book is focused on workstation, the authors refer to NT server as well and I found that to be annoying more then anything else. I would not use this book as a stand-alone tool to teach myself NT Workstation, however, in conjunction with the actual Workstation Software and/or a MCSE trianing Lab, you will be able to make good use of the material within the book. The included Learnkey CD is only the first in a series of 5 that are needed to complete the material in the book and the only reference to that fact is on the CD itself, they kind of "forget" to point that out on the inside back cover of the book and I thought that was a little misleading. Conclusion: you need this book if you are in the training program, other then that, look at Mastering NT Server, also from Sybex , which is the grail of NT. It is much more useful and will provide you with a better insight to the NT world.

I used this book to pass my workstation exam but I found I needed the Exam Cram Workstation book as well though because the questions in the Sybex book werent sufficient enough. Apart from that it's a good buy I feel.
