Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

In order to become a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE), you're required to pass the Networking Essentials exam. If you've spent significant time maintaining or administering local-area networks (LANs), you're halfway there as the exam deals with such common problems as topology selection and protocol comparison. But exams and the real world aren't the same thing. You'll benefit from a guide to the exam that explains where it intersects with and where it diverges from reality.

Exam Prep: Networking Essentials begins with an extremely elementary explanation of what computer networks are and why they're desirable. The book then quickly moves on to topologies, protocols, and the other considerations involved in designing, expanding, or upgrading a LAN. Networking Essentials also covers cabling, network interface cards, and multi-protocol LANs, which are all on the exam.

Each subject's treatment comprises some readable prose, some thoroughly detailed definitions, and some tables, such as those that list various Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) standards that pertain to LANs. You'll find quiz questions (the answers appear in the back of the book) and some real-world scenarios in which you must do such things as justify the extra expense of Ethernet over ARCnet. A companion CD-ROM includes excellent test-simulator software.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can be used as a Networking Learning tool as well, December 22, 1999
This review is from: MCSE Networking Essentials Exam Prep (Exam: 70-058) (Paperback)
I used this study guide along with Sybex's Test Success (ISBN:0782121462, read my review)and both helped me pass the 70-058 with a 900/1000. My only complaint was that WINS and DNS topic coverage in this book was null, and I was tested on these topics in more than one occasion on the real exam.

This book takes a while to read, but it gives you a wealth of knowledge. You will feel that you have actually learned something, which makes this book an excellent networking-terminology learning tool as well.

The CD tests included are challenging and they provide a good measure of your real exam readiness. I'd recommend taking these tests once each and only after you have mastered the material completely. The reason is that the test questions (and answer order) are not randomly generated and taking these tests more than once might actually hurt more than benefit your learning.

I recommend this study guide for its value as an exam tool and a networking reference. Complement it with a Cram book, the Sybex's Test Success book (mentioned above), or a source of practice exam questions (Measureup or Transcender) to tackle the NetEss test with confidence.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great "first" book for highschool "interested" students, November 4, 1999
This review is from: MCSE Networking Essentials Exam Prep (Exam: 70-058) (Paperback)
There are alot of options of MCSE books out there to choose from. Many opinions relating to each book. I chose this book for it's unique organization. I refer to this book many of times. I am still a student, 17 years old, not quite a master of understand networks, but dedicated to passing exam 70-058. This book is not cluttered with "extra" no-use for words. I have no problem mis-agreeing or mis-understand the author of this book. Very well explained, compared to an instructor reading you the material. If your a student like myself and confused on which book to buy, take your time and read the contents, and decide if it is for you. This exceeds what i was "expecting" and permanetly "stated" the information.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book...needs a little touchup though., May 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: MCSE Networking Essentials Exam Prep (Exam: 70-058) (Paperback)
This book helped me to pass the 70-58 exam with a 900 and I don't really have any networking experience. I would highly recommend it. I would however appreciate it if the publisher would reveiw it again for typos which seemed to be present in quite a few places. This could throw someone like myself off.
