5.0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful for both Microsoft and CompTIA
Anyone who knows what it takes to become an MCSE knows that thefirst step is exam 070-058 or Networking Essentials. Also anyone whoknows certifications knows that Network+ certification replaces the 070-058 exam. Now we have a book that will make sure you can pass both!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not really enough ...
This book is really not enough for the MCSE - Networking Essential examination! It is only suitable for beginner to have a study about networking, but for the exam purpose, you must use other books to help, for example MCSE core subjects in a Nutshell.

From the dreaded OSI Model to TCP/IP to network hardware to even networking cables and topologies, this 670 plus page fountain of information is well worth [it.] There is no other book I found like it.

The skips no objective on either exam, and gives you a wealth of information to help you pass both exams. There is review questions at the end of each chapter, real world problems throughout the book and even objective test tips making this book a hard to beat deal.

As with most books on this subject there is material on cd-rom. This book includes 2, 1 with practice tests and the other with video training material and some of the most comprehensive exercises I have ever seen. Sybex you have a winner! END

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Start, August 19, 1999
By A Customer
I think this is a good book for someone without a lot of experience in networking. It offers a real basic overview of the concepts you need to master for the Networking Essentials exam, and also has some decent practice questions. However, you need to look at some other sources to really prepare for the test. I also used Exam Cram and the MS Readiness Review, in addition to some free online tests. If you just read Sybex and take the test, I think you'll end up being surprised at how detailed and tricky the real test questions can be. With 3 or more sources, you'll be able to fill in what each source may miss.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book - I thought it had bang for the buck, February 25, 2000
I recommend this book I used it along with the Exam Cram book the two complete each other. You might be able to pass with this book alone but why waste the 100 dollars if you don't. The goal of any test should be to pass on the first try. This book and the exam cram ISBN # 1-57610-193-4 will help you meet that goal. I recommend this book and give it the 5 star seal of approval. I passed this test on the first try with an 833 and I am a MCP. As with most of these study guides it helps to use more than one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Book is okay.....but, February 26, 1999
Don't take this exam as your first. Matter of fact, don't even take this exam until you've completed TCP/IP and Enterprise, the material is simply too vast to grasp as a beginner. The OSI model and information about network equipment, cabling, ethernet and token ring is pretty good, but the WAN stuff, like X.25, Frame Relay, ATM is VERY weak. Look elswhere for this because the test will cover it. Also expect some WINS and maybe other TCP/IP stuff...in other words take TCP/IP first.

2.0 out of 5 stars Basic Information, June 27, 2000
This review is from: MCSE: Networking Essentials Study Guide, 3rd edition (Hardcover)
I was very disappointed with this book. The information covered in the book was not helpful in preparing for the Networking Essentials exam. The book covered basic terminology, concepts that can be found in other books with less errors. I would not recommend this book in preparing for the Networking Essentials exam.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book!, February 3, 2000
I am currently studying for NW exam and I think that this book covers everything there is to know about networking. It is clear, easy to read and you don't have to be in expert in networking when you start reading it, as some other books assume you are :)

5.0 out of 5 stars The book you need., June 24, 1999

You can pass the exam using only this book. Very few MCSE study guides cover an exam A-Z, many need to be supplemented. But this book is all you need to pass the Networking Essentials exam.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hard core technical, but Test Success is better for techo's, February 4, 1999
By A Customer
I have read into the Study Guide and found that it is full of interesting facts, this is good if you have ZERO knowledge of the product from start, but if you have some technical background i.e you can tell a toaster from a hub, then the better book is: Sybex Networking Essentials - MCSE Test Success it breaks it down to simple language and has all those fun filled hours of questions at the end of each chapter plus a final review at the end of the book but NO STOCK fillings.. most manufactorers like New Ryders and Sybex etc seem to think that Fatter is better, well I don't have 6 months to read the book so a comprehensive and effective Slimmer training guide focused on the Exam and the subject is better than just Subject orientated. So, this book is good for Winter escapes but Test Success is better for the piece of paper without compromising reasonable understanding.

3.0 out of 5 stars Close, but no cigar., August 22, 1998
By A Customer
Chellis et. al. put together a decent book- I have quite a bit of background in the field, but needed to study to pass the 70-058 Microsoft exam- and I work at Microsoft! Anyway, the book had some noticeable proofreading errors, but they usually do not affect the material- typos mostly. The topics seem to jump around, almost a shotgun approach to the material. One chapter will start to move towards a particular topic, and then drop it, only to have it picked up again (sometimes in more detail, sometime less) a few chapters down the road. Some topics were weak- the ODI model for example, compared to texts by Que and others. Needed more diagrams that were useful- alot of the pics are wasted space. Gets in to installing NT Server when this is not covered on the exams- thats for later! Overall, would not recommend. Would suggest QUE or IDG materials. Do have to say this- using other test prep materials (tests available from MS for free and others) I did pass. Barely. If you get this book, the so called optional material on protocals is not optional- read the IPX and TCP sections thouroghly! Good luck!
