Too much enterprise manager,
By A Customer
This review is from: MCSE : SQL Server 7 Administration: Training Guide : Exam : 70-028 (MCSE (Textbook Binding)
If you want to learn how to do things with Enterprise Manager it's great. However is has severe shortcomings on replication and full text search. Most of the info you need to pass their sample tests and exams require other documentation. The best book for that is Books Online or MS SQL Training Kit.

A bit simplistic in places...,
This review is from: MCSE : SQL Server 7 Administration: Training Guide : Exam : 70-028 (MCSE (Textbook Binding)
As previous reviewers noted, this book concentrates on the Enterprise Manager interface. Some of the instructions are *very* detailed, right down to the "Click OK" level, which makes me worry; nobody who has any business administering a database server should need to be told "Click Next to proceed with the Wizard."This kind of detail wouldn't be so bad, except that other, more useful information, is left out. There's very little attention given to T-SQL, even when using a simple T-SQL statement is much more efficient than working through the Enterprise Manager GUI. And there's an assumption that you're familiar with previous versions of SQL Server (especially 6.5) and with basic database concepts. There are a few too many assumptions for the rank novice, and a bit too much emphasis on the GUI for seasoned pros. However, it's set up in about the same format as the exam, and the questions are worthwhile. When I studied for the exam, I found this book useful as *one* aspect of my study strategy -- but, like other reviewers, I can't imagine passing the exam with this book alone.

This is a good book for people never touch SQL server before. This book will provide you a good lads. However, this book will not make you pass the exam 70-028. This book give you only 60% of necessary information. It didn't teach you T-SQL. Need extra material.

Good not enough,

The book has cover almost all the material. But not too strong on the Replication. In addition, I have use Transeder and the transender isn't going to help like all the NT Exam. Make sure you have full understading, do NOT depend on only Transender and this study guide.

Good read, but still need Book Online to pass exam,
This review is from: MCSE : SQL Server 7 Administration: Training Guide : Exam : 70-028 (MCSE (Textbook Binding)
This book is good for learning the product, but not good enough to pass the exam. I have use other New Riders' MCSE book to pass MCSE exams. But you can't simply rely on this book only, in order to write exam 70-028. However I like all the Step-to-step guide.

The book is packed with excellent excercises are plenty of practice tests. I think this book with Transcenders should certainly do the trick.

This is still one of the best books on SQL Admin. It combines easy readability with succint coverage of virtually all you need to know for the exam. The CD is also packed with assorted practice materials. Definitely worth its weight in gold! Thank you, the authors, for taking time to write this great book.

Helped Me Pass the SQL Server 7 Exams and Get Certified,
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: MCSE : SQL Server 7 Administration: Training Guide : Exam : 70-028 (MCSE (Textbook Binding)
This product helped me pass the SQL Server 7 exams, some of the more difficult Microsoft exams, and I got certified. Right away, I'm going to confess that after going through all the trouble of getting certified, and it was a lot of trouble, I never worked with databases again. Changes in the economy favored my working in another direction as I am a CPA and a CISA, among other things.
Although this item helped me to get certified, I did not find that the materials were actually covered in the database administration or database design and implementation exams. This item was marketed well, leading me to believe that actual questions and answers from it would be included in the exam, but none were. Still, it was great although arduous preparation. I wouldn't do it again. My only complaint, other than the promotion that didn't live up to the expectations it created, was that there were numerous errors in this product. As I studied using this item, I discovered errors, and this helped me to maintain a "professional skepticism" that allowed me to eventually answer problems on the exam using my own judgment. That's what pulled me through those tough exams. In defense of the authors, the actual Microsoft exams also had errors. That really knocked the stars from my eyes. I came to realize that passing exams and getting certified were not as important as I had originally believed. |
