A third edition of the study guide for Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer candidates who have selected Internetworking Microsoft Certified TCP/IP with Windows NT 4.0 as an elective subject exam.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

A popular elective on the road to Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) certification and a requirement of the MCSE + Internet rating, Microsoft's TCP/IP exam (70-059) tests many aspects of Windows NT and open Internet protocols. MCSE: TCP/IP for NT Server 4 Study Guide helps you get clear about how Windows NT implements TCP/IP. As do all the Sybex MCSE books, this one includes plenty of exam-like multiple-choice questions you can use to identify weak points in your Windows NT knowledge.

The authors of MCSE: TCP/IP for NT Server 4 Study Guide present more than facts, choosing to back up "hard" material with analogies, exercises, and other supplementary prose. It's important to note that they do cover all the subjects that appear on the TCP/IP exam--they use Microsoft's guidelines as a means of organization. Whether the supplementary material is a help or a hindrance depends on your learning style.

If you're an MCSE candidate in search of a sparer style, you might be happier with a different TCP/IP preparation book; but if you prefer readable prose and experiments in addition to lists of facts, you'll appreciate the authors' approach here. If you don't want to haul a book around at all, you will benefit from the quiz programs on the two CD-ROMs that accompany the book. --David Wall

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is EXCELLENT!, February 19, 2000
By
The authors have constructed an excellent study guide. I passed the test the first time around with a 966. The book presented TCP/IP, and Microsoft's DHCP, WINS, and DNS in such an easy to understand manner, it seemed a fog was lifted. Throughout my pursuit of an MCSE many subjects were only touched on, not explained in any detail. I had a general understanding of concepts like DHCP, WINS, and DNS, but not until I finished this book did I feel comfortable with these powerful services. Everything finally made sense. I enjoyed the humor added to a potentially boring subject. I strongly recommend this book to anyone trying to pass TCP/IP. Good Luck!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book for those who already have experience, December 15, 1999

This review is from: MCSE : TCP/IP for Nt Server 4 Study Guide, 3rd Edition (Hardcover)
The book was a very good study guide to fill in the gaps of standards/subnetting that I'd not gotten into in my previous years of experience in networking. The only problem I had with it was that he was too wordy at times and there were TOO many typos, etc. At one point he said, "We didn't mention this before..." but it was mentioned in the previous chapter.. not enough attention to detail. However, after reading this book I scored 1000 on the test. I am pleased.

3.0 out of 5 stars Average at best. Annoying trying to read between the lines., July 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: MCSE : TCP/IP for Nt Server 4 Study Guide, 3rd Edition (Hardcover)
I was pretty disappointed in this book. I had read the Sybex "Networking Essentials" and thought it was great. Also, the reviews for this book were very high. I do like how much information Sybex gives - it is important to me to really understand the subject and material even if it means learning things that will not be on the test.

However, trying to read the book was extremely annoying at times. The way Lammle wrote the book is like parents trying to "talk cool" to their teenage children. There are many analogies that say things are "very cool" and "You can get the skinny" on things. I just wanted the information! I spent way too much time trying to figure out what the hell the guy was talking about rather then being able to read the facts and learn. I finally finished the book, and do know the subject well. But I would be very hesitant to buy another book by this author.

There are also quite a few errors, and some of the questions and answers are flat out wrong. Oh well! I also read Exam Cram and Nutshell, so I am not relying on one source.
