Almost the best,
By
This review is from: MCSE Training Guide (70-240): Windows 2000 Accelerated Exam (Microsoft Certified Professional) (Hardcover)
This is the best book for Accelerated exam. But there are few things you should know. If you read the chapters you will notice that a lot of the relevant information to the tests on the CD are not covered in the chapters. The reason being, they are included on the CD in the chapter's folder In UDF format. Which means having to print each file in order to do the exercises and study for the tests unless you have two computers in the case of exercises. The tests on the CD are typical but plenty. But I wouldn't rely entirely on them. Some of the questions are repeated several times and few have errors. My biggest problem about the tests is that you cannot print them even though there is a print option. But all that does is a print screen and one page at a time. And that's ridiculous. Also there are no updates even though there is an update option. Maybe this is a price we pay for purchasing a first publication but then who's got time for the third. Printing capability by chapter or marked or wrong questions is an essential. If the publisher wish To release an incomplete product then they should at least give you the option to open the test file in a text format so that you can print them. I give it 5 stars for contents and 1 for the software.

Readable but many errors.,

This review is from: MCSE Training Guide (70-240): Windows 2000 Accelerated Exam (Microsoft Certified Professional) (Hardcover)
This book is much more readable than the Osborne title, but it has many errors in both the text and the end-of-chapter tests. (text ex. - They can't seem to make up their minds whether they want to use absolute hardware minimums or recommended minimums when giving you hardware requirements) Since I first read the four Core books by the same publisher, I could see where they cut-and-pasted a lot of text from them. The problem there is that they also copied over the same errors they had in the full texts. In addition, at least in the Active Directory section, the Case Studies they copied were out-of-context and didn't include all the data that had been in previous chapters in the full book.It WAS educational to track down the mistakes, though. Overall, I would call this effort a combination of knowledge gaps on the part of the authors and a very poor job of editing and proofreading.

I passed the accelerated exam with use of this book and a one-week crunch course to get the hands-on with Win2K. This book throws a ton of stuff at you. Much of it will be familiar to you if you are 4.0 certified. But much will also be very unclear until you see it on a screen. There are some areas that this book covers in terms that are too general, and I'm happy I had a knowledgeable instructor fill in those holes for me. And often the text rambles a bit. I also found it annoying that I had to go to the CD for many of the details - even though I understand this necessity; had the CD's extras all been included in the printed volume, this would likely be a 2000 page book.Exam Tips: If you know this stuff, this is not a hard test. But prepare to have your mental stamina tested by this monster.

I found this book to be extremely helpful in my preparation for the Upgrade exam. I have already taken and passed two of the core four exams ( 2000 professional and 2000 server) using this book as a reference. This book was written in good plain easy to understand english, and the practice exams were out of this world.

This is not the book to buy if you wnat to pass the 70-240 exam. Lots of information is missing or badly explained, some chapters are very superficial and incomplete. The exercises as well the text chapters just tell you what to do not rather why you do it that way.Get Syngress book it is much better book.

After a quick survey I chose this book as the key to my study plan for 70-240. I'm sorry to say that I failed the exam, and the reason was poor preparation. However this book did play a part in my downfall. The lessons were good, but contained so many mistake and typo's (that were never corrected in the errata) that I became quickly confused. Having the step.by.step on a CD seemed like a good idea, but they were terribly clumsy to use, and without them the book is worthless. The sample test questions also contain errors that are never addressed in the errata, and they bore no resemblence to the real questions.

For those who are MCSEs already, this is NOT a book for you! This book is simply a single Core Four for Windows 2000 book for those with little to no working experience with Windows NT 4.0 or 2000 administration. For those with administration experience on Windows NT 4.0, or extensive knowledge of Windows NT 4.0, you would do better purchasing exam notes for 70-240 published by either Coriolis or Sybex, and checking Microsoft's Windows 2000 Online Resources for additional information.

This review is from: MCSE Training Guide (70-240): Windows 2000 Accelerated Exam (Microsoft Certified Professional) (Hardcover)
I got this book last March 2001 and read it all, it lacks a lot of useful information needed for real life and/or Exam pass; the labs and exercises are available on the companion CD only. Also I found a lot of typo errors in some chapters and the securtiy part is so poor, and many information were repeated a lot in other chapters, which makes the book quite large and heavy. Most of the text in this book is available in Win2K online-help and the Resource Kit, and refering to the companion CD is a real pain if you're reading the book far away from the computer. The included sample questions/apply your knowledge part is far away from the real exam questions/scenarious. Waste of money, get Sybex or other books, at least they include the exercises or labs inside the book rather than on CD.

Best book I've found for the 240,
By Jason Brown (UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: MCSE Training Guide (70-240): Windows 2000 Accelerated Exam (Microsoft Certified Professional) (Hardcover)
Fantastic. The best 240 book I've read: comprehensive, simple to understand, not littered with irrelevances. I've read many other book where whole chunks of the curriculum have been skipped over or totally ignored, (especially MOC Network Infrastructure) - this fills the gaps. If you read only one book (you're stupid 'cause you'll fail the exam:), but at least make sure it's this one.
