The real hallmark of this second edition is its use of structured chapters and study aids. Readers will easily find vital information without stumbling through excessive graphics or attempts at shortcutting the material. Bulleted objective lists, complete chapter outlines, and study strategies for sections are helpful tools. Inside each lesson are examination tips, warnings, case studies, and step-by-step exercises that familiarize the reader with the feature at hand. Discussions conclude with exercises, review questions, sample exam questions, and references to additional related resources.
Perhaps the key to using this guide is picking the right elements to pay attention to. Fortunately, it offers plenty to choose from and covers the material in excellent detail. --Stephen W. Plain

WASTE OF TIME & MONEY,

Below is a list of things the author EITHER POORLY COVER OR DID NOT EVEN MENTION in the book. If you want to pass IIS 4.0 exam, find a better book. Try ISS ExamCram published by CORIOLISAuthentication . Configuration for IIS virtual directory when two systems do not share a common NT domain was not even mentioned. For example: If IIS is located on Server1 and a virtual directory is located on Server2 and the two system do not share a common NT domain. . NT Guest Account was not discussed even though Anonymous User Account is part of NT Guest Account by default and knowing is is important to prevent anonymous user access to certain directories. WWW . Did not discuss about spaces in virtual directory names could cause problems for older browsers . Did not discuss about specifing IP address of virtual server for a virtual directory or the virtual directory will be seen by all virtual servers FTP . Did not discuss directory annotations at all: REG-DWORD and ~ftpsvc~.ckm . Did not discuss about browsers that cannot handle multiple-lines FTP welcome message Running Applications: ISAPI, CGI, Perl . Permission to run these apps were poorly covered . Did not discuss CGI at all: canot run using only Challenge/Response authentication . Did not discuss Perls and command interpreter SSL . Did not discuss about how SSL certificate can be applied to a virtual server by specifying IP address IIS/SQL . Did not discuss about the fact that .IDC require 32-bit ODBC drivers . Did not discuss about how to prevent hackers from access SQL via TCP/IP by changing the transport protocol between SQL & ISS servers . Did not discuss about ISS and SQL in different NT domains, how trust relationship must be set up, or IUSR_ComputerName has to be added to the SQL domain . Did not discuss about how Challenge/Response prevents logging onto remote SQL Index Server . No mention of .IDA script, MaxIndexesValue, NOISE.ENU whatsoever . Solving Indexing problems such as irrelevent or unwanted hits and creating separate catalogs were poorly covered . I could not believe it but there were not a single things about Word List, Shadow Indexes, Master Index, and merging of these indexes at all

A disappointment - I Should have read the reviews first.,

I have used New Riders MCSE Study Guides for all of my Previous Certification Exams and have always found them great. This is a horrible exception. I stumbled acrossed this edition (knowing the first was out of print)and purchased it immediately. The book contains only about 75% of the necessary material. Questions in the practice tests (Measure Up and Transcender)make reference to material nowhere in the book. I have always relied on a couple of good Practice tests and a good third part book to research in order to prep. It has been a successful process that has enabled me to pass every test on the first try and really know the material. But this time I am forced to abandon this book as every 3rd or 4th question is referring to data outside of the scope of this book. I cannot in good consience recommned this book.

Very much a disappointment,

After reading sitting and passing the IIS 4 exam, I feel the book did teach me just enough to pass the exam but not enough to get that all round view that many of the other New Riders books have. But then I also believe you should have more than one source of information for any exam.
