5.0 out of 5 stars Great study tool
I'm planning on going for my MCSE when the 2000 exams come out, and I bought the Headstart book, so I could start studying now. I really liked this book, because it doesn't just gloss over all the new Win2000 features, it explains how they work. Also, all of the exerecises and questions are very detailed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Operationally Practical - But Not a Testing Tool
This book was very good, and will continue to be a resource for actual implementation of Windows 2000. The book parallels Microsoft Official Curriculum (MOC) 1560, and does not go into many of the details necessary to pass test 76-203. As an example - the book's material in performing an NT 4 Upgrade with basic disks with a RAID5 configuration to W2K and performing...

This book was very good, and will continue to be a resource for actual implementation of Windows 2000. The book parallels Microsoft Official Curriculum (MOC) 1560, and does not go into many of the details necessary to pass test 76-203. As an example - the book's material in performing an NT 4 Upgrade with basic disks with a RAID5 configuration to W2K and performing disk replacement was not be be found, but asked on the test. Much of the info. seems to be based on W2K Release Candidate 3.

Bottom line - this is the best book I've seen, it may need a revision shortly, but will not get you through the exams alone.

I read a pre-release copy of this book and it is a solid, informational, nuts-and-bolts tome of information that any Windows 2000 administrator or potential Windows 2000 MCSE should own. Factual, straight-forward and filled with "gotta know it" material

I saw this book when rummaging around in the windows 2000 stacks at amazon. The book is big! there's a lot of good hands-on exercises and reveiw questions at the end of every chapter, which really helps me remember the material after finishing up the chapter. I really liked the chapters on active directory, dns, wins, proxy. one things fer sure, i've got a lot ot studying ahead of me! this book's a great start.

I picked up a copy of this book a couple weeks ago and finished last night, pretty easy reading for NT 4.0 MCSEs, good labs too. Definately served its purpose.

Noticed this book while browsing Amazon and decided to pick it up. Very glad I did. Provides great info. on 2000, and helps show what sort of information we'll need to know for the new exam track. The sections on Active Directory were fantastic! In my opinion, this is a great pre-study book for anyone looking to explore the new MCSE 2000 exams- and I think will serve as a valuable reference tool as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and heavy on actual examples, December 28, 1999

I was suprised to see a book on the for Windows 2000 Server cert but glad I bought it. I am going to take the beta exam(s) this spring, and there is nothing else out to prepare.

I've been a beta site for the release candidates, and the material is on target. The only complaint I have is that there's not a CD with exams/etc...

Extremely good book, I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is planning on writing the Win2k certs in the New Year, or is planning on writing the trainer provisional exams like me. Now that I have a good footing I will start on the MOC manuals. Good luck.

As an MCSE , reading this book refreshed many of the information about NT 4.0 with its first part chapters , uptil part 2 of the book where the real staff of windows 2000 begins which is AD , the third part is exactly as reading a book about the TCP/IP exam "i.e WINS,DNS,DHCP,...etc" for windows 2000. The book is wonderful as a head start , if you are looking for a book to learn the general specification of windows 2000 and comparing them with windows NT 4.0 this the ONE !!!

This book lacked depth. It covers all the essentials but leaves big gaps. For example: in setting up sites, this books does not adequately cover subnets, nor how to add objects to the site.
