Give em' a ZERO for Quality Control, June 15, 2001
This review is from: MCSE Windows 2000 Core Requirements: Virtual Test Center (Hardcover)
Well, where can I start. The questions don't work properly at all. The score doesn't tally correctly in practice mode, and some of the questions don't have the right VB code to toggle required features. Cmon, Sybex. How can you even think of releasing a product without minimal quality control. I was really dissapointed with this product. Would have rated it a zero if I could. I wrote the sybex people, and did not get what I felt was a proper response..so not only is this product lousy, they have poor customer service. I've purchased MANY Sybex products, and have been happy with all of them except this one. Sybex lost me as a customer here.

Wrong questions make sure you know what you are doing, February 9, 2005
This review is from: MCSE Windows 2000 Core Requirements: Virtual Test Center (Hardcover)
The product has wrong questions with wrong answers, but in my opinion that does not matter all that much.
For example, the question deals with a DOS-based upgrade, yet it thinks that winnt32.exe is one of the correct answers. In fact, winnt32.exe is used to upgrade from 32-bit operating systems that DOS is not.
If I know the answer is right, while the product thinks it's wrong, I can check my references, confirm that the answer I think is correct really is the correct one. Going through all this, you can rest assured that you won't forget that particular aspect of technology when the exam time comes.
It has definitely helped me identify my weaker areas and resolved some of my long-term questions.
The concept of the product is excellent and I'd happily rate it with 4 stars, but it has serious usability issues. The main problem with the product has to do with its reliance on Microsoft JVM that is no longer supported by Microsoft. You will have trouble making it work on XP, so here is a workaround - install MS JVM, ignore it, install Mozilla (not Firefox, won't work), launch the product in IE, open the same URL in Mozilla, and then you can use the product.
Overall, using this product is much better than using nothing at all, so if the price is right, such as below $20, get it.
Good luck :-)
Leonid
