Book Description

Exam Prep (Coriolis' Certification Insider Press) July 24, 2000
MCSE Windows 2000 Foundations explores the key concepts and technologies behind Windows 2000 and helps readers sort through the complexity of the new Windows 2000 MCSE certification exams. A Self-Assessment section helps readers evaluate their knowledge of Windows 2000 and a Resource Appendix details a wide variety of study resources that will enable the reader to tailor a Windows 2000 MCSE study program to meet individual requirements. MCSE Windows 2000 Foundations compares Windows 2000 and NT Architectures, explains Windows 2000 installation, troubleshooting, deployment, and service packs; covers the planning and implementation of naming strategies and domain structures; and discusses typical I/O devices such as printers, scanners, Sound, Video, mouse, keyboard, smartcard readers, modems, and device drivers.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Aiming for your Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) certification? You'll find overlapping coverage quickly in many of the exams that you can take to qualify, which is great from a preparation point of view, but bad if you have to pay for several copies of the same materials in several exam-specific study guides. MCSE Windows 2000 Foundations is wise to the redundancy in the MCSE battery of tests, and presents itself as an all-in-one guide to what you need to know to pass. By and large, the book lives up to its claim, and provides ample coverage of all essential Microsoft Windows 2000 configuration and networking matters. Probably, you'll want to supplement this book with one that deals more explicitly with Active Directory, if that's a weak point in your knowledge, but it's fine for reviewing all of the general Windows 2000 information that appears on the MCSE exams.

This book is more a general reference and tutorial than an exam guide--it focuses on the facts at hand more than on the exams. The authors prefer to explain concepts in prose, which is effective. However, readers who prefer to absorb concepts visually might wish for fewer screen shots and more clarifying diagrams. Some procedures appear in the text, along with numbered sequences that describe communications between processes. About the only explicitly exam-ish feature is the selection of practice questions that wraps up each chapter. Annotated answers appear in an appendix. --David Wall

Topics covered: The subjects that you need to understand to pass Microsoft certification exams on Windows 2000 Professional (70-210), Windows 2000 Server (70-215), Network Infrastructure (70-216), and Active Directory (70-217), as well as the combined ("Accelerated") Windows 2000 exam (70-240).

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful for more than just passing the exams, August 29, 2000

This review is from: MCSE Windows 2000 Foundations Exam Prep (Exam: 70-210, 70-215, 70-216, 70-217, 70-240) (Hardcover)
I bought this book to help me get through the core exams for Windows 2000, and so far I have passed both W2K Server and Directory Services Imp with no problems. However I feel I will find this book very useful as a reference in the future.

The writers have managed to explain Windows 2000 in a way that makes it far more understandable than the Microsoft Press books that I had previously tried to use.

Especially noteworthy were the chapters on AD, DNS DHCP and Security.

5.0 out of 5 stars More than just an exam prep book., October 5, 2000
This review is from: MCSE Windows 2000 Foundations Exam Prep (Exam: 70-210, 70-215, 70-216, 70-217, 70-240) (Hardcover)
Exams 70-210, 70-215, 70-216, 70-217 and 70-240 are the next generation of MCSE 2000 core exams and wouldn't it be nice to have one book to study all the objectives from instead of 5 or 6? Coriolis, a leader in exam preparation test material has once again taken the lead with the Windows 2000 Foundation Exam Prep.

The book covers the 5 exam and their objectives in a different fashion that other I have seen. This book put them objective together rather than separate sections, thus removing the redundancy factor for repeating information several times.

Starting off with the 200 architecture to installation, device drivers, management, performance, reliability, configuring and troubleshooting, you have only finished the first 7 chapters. You have tables, review questions, hands-on exercises to learn from.

Moving on you get 2000 networking, security, active directory, DNS, DHCP, remote access, WINS and IP routing and now you are at chapter 16. Again you have figures, tables, diagrams, exercises and review questions to work with.

In the final sections you learn about NAT, certificate servers, configuration management, tuning, active directory security and that brings you to chapter 21. Unlike most Exam Prep books this one does not have a cd with practice questions, which might be a small drawback. Overall the value is well worth the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good Foundation, September 23, 2000
This review is from: MCSE Windows 2000 Foundations Exam Prep (Exam: 70-210, 70-215, 70-216, 70-217, 70-240) (Hardcover)
I picked up this book to help me get started on my quest to upgrade my MCSE. I like the way that the authors explain the concepts behind the new features incorporated in Windows 2000. I thought that the chapters on RAS and Active Directory were especially good.

The only negative was that RIS was not covered as thoroughly as I would have liked, but overall the book is must buy for anyone that is trying to get up to speed on W2K.
