I really hate writing this review. I've used & recommended the Exam Cram series for almost 18 months now, and while its CompTIA titles have been truly superb, this title fell below their usually high standards.

This review is from: MCSE Windows 2000 Professional Exam Cram 2 (Exam Cram 70-210) (Paperback)
Having passed the 70-210 exam in February, I used several books for study as well as several practice exam software applications.

What the Exam Cram Series does is take the major points of the exam combine it excellent practice software and give you a great final prep tool to work with.

The particular book does cover every exam objective. The material is technically accurate and up to date with the exam I sat. I also found the author(s) have put together a study guide that is easy to understand and follow.

The cd-rom included in the book has practice questions from Prep Logic. I have used this set of question in pursuit of my MCSA and found them to harder than the actual exam. Que has picked a winner here.

If you are looking to pass the 70-210 exam on one book, this is not that book, but if you are looking for a book a final reference point this may be the one.

BOOK ERRATA

· pg 69 unless you've really hacked your registry, you cannot set Portrait or Landscape orientation on the SHARING TAB.
· pg 188 In Device Manager, under the Ports section, COM does NOT refer to Component Object Model; it DOES refer to COMmunication port.
· pg 162 states for a distribution share the answer file must be named WINNT.SIF; contradicting Micro$oft themselves stating for A CD-ROM INSTALLATION: Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 216258
· [And the REALLY big one] pg 158 <AND> pg 337/355 [Q/A]: Windows 2000 needs 64MB of RAM, NOT 32MB. I have this stated on the...Windows Help File, and on the box's min. system requirements.

MANDATORY OMISSIONS

· There is no coverage of the different Security Templates. Not in the text, the glossary, or index.
· Additionally no info on Netware compatibility. Not even adding client services or NWLink. This is NOT just limited to the 215 Server exam. You WILL be questioned on Novell compatibility.
· Multilanguage Edition: forgot to mention the name of the executable MUISETUP.EXE
· Question 4, pg 211. Now I agree an MSCE/MCSA should know about CAT 5 UTP cabling, HOWEVER this subject is NOT covered in the corresponding chapter [Implement Hardware Devices & Drivers???], much less the entire book. Not even the glossary.

WHAT THIS TITLE EXCELS ON

Explanation of Domain's Group Policies. Definitely a superb job here, as well as Implementing & Administering Resources. Most titles out there leave out the -why- for setting up shares or configuring policies. Very crucial to the networking neophyte. Also very detailed chapters on Installing 2000 and Monitoring Performance & Reliability. Network Protocols, Disk Performance, User Environment, and Hardware Device/Drivers were also completely adequate for the 210 exam. Finally the questions FROM THE BOOK are exponentially better than the PrepLogic CD for purposes of taking the 210 exam.

IN CONCLUSION

The absence of an errata page is what lowered the books rating. If you have already purchased this book, the Windows 2000 Help File is a great help; fills in some gaps, esp the Glossary.

4.0 out of 5 stars And I Speak Klingon Too., December 20, 2005
By
This review is from: MCSE Windows 2000 Professional Exam Cram 2 (Exam Cram 70-210) (Paperback)
Well thank you for that refreshing take on things Jimbo from (where was it again?). "I have 2 diplomas with highest honours in the computer field. I am A+ and Network+ certified. I have over 10 years of computing experience and I can't pass exam 70-210". Well if his two Diplomas were at the the same standard as his A+ and Network+ Certifications it's no wonder he struggles with #70-210. Yes there are typos and mistakes but I just wonder how the other reviewers got through their exams if this Exam Cram was so bad. Whilst I agree that no title is perfect being hyper critical for the sake of it or because one is a little "slow", no matter how frustrating that might be, is no reason to lay into this title. Overall worth the read and the price.

What a waste of time reading this crap. I have 2 diplomas with highest honours in the computer field. I am A+ and Network+ certified. I have over 10 years of computing experience and I can't pass exam 70-210. I prepared for this exam using the ExamPrep and ExamCram2 series and I read and studied both books 2 times over and I failed the exam 2 times over. I scored 625 the first time and 650 the second time. Simply put there is not enough information in this book to pass the exam. Anyone who says they passed by reading this material is lying. It is a great base but it will not get you over the hump.

I aced the practise questions in the back of each chapter in both books. These questions are nothing like what you will face in the exam room. I don't understand why these authors do this to us. Don't get me wrong. If you want to learn the fundamentals of an o/s then pickup ExamPrep. If you want to expand on what you learned then add ExamCram2 to your list of books, however do not attempt the real thing because you won't be ready.

I am now stuck in a position to get me over the hump and hopefully this website will have the resources to get me there, cert21.com. They have true practise exam questions the resemble the real thing. The questions you get from this site will help you realise how ready you are for the exam.

I don't know what else I can do to prepare for this. I am sick of books that deliver the same basic content. We need books that deliver indepth anaylisis of topics and with solid examples. ExamCram2 does not give you this. Both books prepared me to score in the 600 range. Too bad you need 700 to pass. Two thumbs down!!!

This is one of the BEST study guides for the 70-210 exam! It's quick and to the point! It teaches you everything about that exam and even more! It took me only two days and I passed the exam.

Don't take my word for it.....try it out for yourself!

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid exam prep, May 27, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: MCSE Windows 2000 Professional Exam Cram 2 (Exam Cram 70-210) (Paperback)
This is a good example of the EC series - it doesn't try to teach you exactly how the product works, but instead provides a fast way to quickly review key concepts. This doesn't try to "cheat" by giving away actual test questions. Instead, it reviews all of the objectives on the exam. If you find yourself unable to understand something or unable to answer the included review questions, you know you've got more studying and practice to do before you take the exam. It's accurate, well-written, and a quick read so it won't take all the time in the world. Probably your best choice for getting an entire exam worth of objectives into your head all at once.

5.0 out of 5 stars Passed the 76-210 Refresh Win2k Pro with this book!, May 31, 2003
This review is from: MCSE Windows 2000 Professional Exam Cram 2 (Exam Cram 70-210) (Paperback)
I'm very happy to report that these Exam Cram2 books are just as good or better than they have ever been. I took the 76-210 Refresh Win2k Pro test with this book and MCSA/MCSE Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-210): Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Professional, Second Edition as my primary training material.

I Passed the 4 hour 76-210 test in less than 3 hours and felt very confident all of the way through the test. I would recommend this Exam Cram 2 book to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars There Is More to a Book Review: Customer Services, Excellent, October 24, 2003

This review is from: MCSE Windows 2000 Professional Exam Cram 2 (Exam Cram 70-210) (Paperback)
My class was canceled and I had to return the book. I was searching for the return address on the internet and could not find it and submitted a poor rating for this book. After I submitted the rating I tried several more times and I found the return address on the internet. I want to retract the bad ratting. It also never occurred to me to look at the shipping box for the return address. "I APOLOGIZE FOR MY ERROR". After submitting the poor evaluation, I installed Windows 2000 Professional XP, and lost all my e-mail messages for several days and could not receive e-mail or view my old e-mail. Ritchie had sent messages informing me what to do, which were lost. I finally fixed my e-mail and received addition messages from Ritchie. He was concerned because I did not reply to his previous messages. I am honored and impressed with his concern. There is more to a review. There is "Customer Service", which I rate as excellent.
