1.0 out of 5 stars I passed the test, but no thanks to this book.
Being someone who's been in the industry for years, I started to read this book and kept finding errors. Mainly errors that were from this book being written with the Windows 98 Beta in mind. The errors could have hurt some users. Basically do not use this book alone. The Cram sheet is great though. I recommend SAMS Teach Yourself MCSE Windows 98 in 14 days over it (I'd...

The Windows 98 exam is one of the toughest - it proved that way for me out of the four MCP exams I have taken so far. Don't think you know Windows 98 for the exam just because you have been using it for years and know how to use the contol panel. The Exam goes heavy into the networking end of using Windows 98, particularly as a client in an Windows NT4.0 or Novell domain. There is lots on the test having to do with Novell integration, TCP/IP configuration and troubleshooting, file utilities, user and hardware profiles, the registry, dial up networking, troubleshooting, boot sequence, system policies, mutimedia capablilities, and security/sharing. The exam has lots of scenario and simulation problems. Exam Cram is a great book to use as a supplement to a full study guide - I used Sam's Teach Yourself MCSE Windows 98 in 14 Days and was very happy with it. A lot of hands on using your computer with Windows 98 to try doing things as you learn them is very helpful. Even though you might not be able to use Windows 98 on a network you can still install and configure most everything you need to do to pass the exam. Exam Cram will help reinforce what you have learned and if you feel unsure about an area of study then you can refer to your main study guide to bone up on that area. The book has a very good focus of what is important to learn for the exam. Exam Cram also has a couple of hundred practice questions - some at the end of each chapter and a 59 question practice exam at the end. The practice exam is tough and the answer section is done in such a way as to explain why a particluar answer is right and why the others are wrong, which will help you learn. I also recommend the book to anyone who just wants to learn the full capablilies of Windows 98. I read a few general purpose Windows 98 books that did not cover ANY of the more advanced topics that you will find in a MCSE type book. Exam Cram MCSE Windows 98 is well worth the money!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Book, August 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: MCSE Windows 98 Exam Cram (Exam: 70-098) (Paperback)
I would have rated this book higher except that its the third book I've read on the subject and SAMs book was too good and tough act to follow. The reason I didn't think it was perfect was due the the large amount of information provided in this exam cram that wasn't even mention in the study guide. I took this test and this extra information wasn't on the test (or even in its focus); this made the book quite confusing with too many little details in one unimportant area and not enough in some other areas. The test questions were harder than the actual exam so don't let this book hurt your confidence even if you get just 50% on these questions you should be able to easily get 80% on the test. Overall this is a well written book but I felt it went off track at times (no harm done).

5.0 out of 5 stars To the point, as usual, April 30, 1999
This review is from: MCSE Windows 98 Exam Cram (Exam: 70-098) (Paperback)
As an instructor of the Microsoft MCSE curriculum, I often rely on Exam Cram for a no-nonsense supplement to the Microsoft publications. In most instances Exam Cram provides better contextual 'handles' and in some instances improved depth, but does it in fewer words. If you use a yellow-marker to select relevant content, about 50% of this book will be highlighted. (With some Sybex books your lucky if you can find 25% content between the pendantics). The Exam Cram Win98 book does an excellent job of preparing you for the MS exam and can serve as a concise desk reference to an administrator or user.

5.0 out of 5 stars Help me pass, May 15, 2000
This review is from: MCSE Windows 98 Exam Cram (Exam: 70-098) (Paperback)
I studied the Microsoft Press version for Test 70-098 and it really was not helpful in my test. I failed the first time with a 660. I bought the Exam Cram book and was so much better equipped for the test. I passed with a 860 and was not nervous at all during the test session. i felt very well prepared. I think the Exam Cram book is a must have/need and the Exam Prep is a good option. The Exam Prep book is good since it has a CD with 2 sample tests. It also has alot more review questions. I have passed the A+ with Exam Cram/Exam Prep as well and look forward to finishing my MCSE with Exam Cram. I think it will only take me 2 months to complete.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have study guide, February 1, 2000
This review is from: MCSE Windows 98 Exam Cram (Exam: 70-098) (Paperback)
After taking eight Microsoft exams, Win98 is the hardest that I have found and I am very thankful to have had this book to help me through it. The Exam Cram series has been wonderful and this installation is no exception. Of all the study guides that I used for the Win98 exam, this one was by far the best. I would suggest supplimenting it with the Windows 98 Resource Kit.

I recentley took the Microsoft Windows 98 course. After purchasing and reading the Exam-Cram book, I felt that all the terms and concepts were much clearer to me. This is an excellent complement to the Microsoft Windows 98 course.

5.0 out of 5 stars One stop shop for the Windows 98 Exam - 70-098, May 6, 1999

This review is from: MCSE Windows 98 Exam Cram (Exam: 70-098) (Paperback)
I am currently self-studying to obtain my MCSE. This was the third book I picked up to study for 70-098. I wish it was the first! An over-abundance of information, no messy typos and technical errors. I read the Sybex book and they left a lot of details out that I needed for the test! This book is great and may be the only one you ever need however I also recommend the white & green paperback books - Accelerated MCSE Windows 98 70-098 as a supplement to this book. Those two together are an excellent pair. Forget about the Sybex book, too many typos and sloppy writing prevent it from being truely useful. I passed the exam with 709/1000 BTW... barely passed on the first shot.

This review is from: MCSE Windows 98 Exam Cram (Exam: 70-098) (Paperback)
As is the case for all the Exam Cram books I've used, this is the best study guide on the market. It is packed full of the information you'll need in order to pass the exam. I thought I was ready to pass, until I picked up this book and learned quite a few little nuances of Windows 98 that I hadn't used before and/or wasn't familiar with. It also provides many study tips and exam taking tips for those who are new to the certification exams. Highly recommended!
