I've been using Sony in-ear phones for a little over a decade now and there's been quite a worrying pattern to my experience, where the XB90EX comes in as one of the "awesomely great" generations.

Let me quickly go through my history of experiences with Sony in-ear phones (it started with the white MDR EX-70) so you might understand what I'm getting at:

MDR-EX70: awesomely great, first in-ear phones I've ever had.
MDR-EX71: about as good as the EX70, including the white cables that turn an ugly yellow-ish colour after 2 years.
MDR-EX85: were not as good as I expected them to be, but a decent improvement over the previous.
MDR-EX500: GREAT! These things blew me away totally. Whole new sound experience.
MDR-EX510: HUGE disappointment (meager bass) at a ridiculously higher price point. The most ridiculously-priced of all!
MDR-XB90EX: ABSOLUTELY AMAZING and yet almost half the price off of what I paid for the EX510!

See the pattern? It seems that the quality jumps up every other generation or so. Thank God my 510s held up (until I lost them just two days ago.. hence I got the XB90s) and I skipped the ridiculously overpriced XBA line. The XBA line does NOT sound worlds better than the meager 510s I had (In fact, the XBA-2 was the most decent sounding of the XBA line, on par with my 500s).

WHAT a HUGE improvement these XB90EXs are over ANY of the in-ear models I've ever had (or tested)!! Even the Sony Store salesperson recommended these over the ridiculously-overpriced XBA line. The drivers in the xb90s are 16mm -- larger than any of the others (typically at 13.5mm). It makes for a world of difference. The price point is an absolute treat as well. Cheaper than my 510s (MUCH cheaper!!) and just a little more than what my 500s cost me.

I've been using the Monster Carbine and Beats Tour before I decided to purchase this earbud.
My beats decided to give up on me so I was looking for a good replacement, and after spending weeks on many different review sites, amazon, and other site including head-fi.org
After a VERY long extensive search, I decided to purchase a Sony earbud.
These XB90EX are imports from Japan so it is very difficult to find a legitimate review of an audiophile online, but I stumbled upon a forum post in head-fi.org which talked about these which definitely helped me make up my mind.
Now, I've been using them for a little over a month and I cant ever go back to my Turbines.
The Sub Bass of the buds are very booming, which feels like a subwoofer in the buds. Note that I said sub bass.
It's a booming sound which I haven't heard in any other previous earbuds I've used before.
The ones from monster, and my older Radius DDM 2 (HP TWF21) which all promises superior bass sounds like nothing after using these. They are a bit big and sticks out of your ears, but the sound is very premium for an IEM.
the cables are also flat designed and definitely feels like high quality materials, but they are a little thinner than the tours.
So that was a short review from a non audiophile, I can promise you that these blow every other earbuds away that are in a higher price range, including the monster carbines, beats tour and the DDM2.

I was actually hesitant about these earphones due to the fact that they are import only and not sold here in the U.S. Boy do I have to say I am very happy with my purchase. I currently own the Sony MDR-XB40EX and I personally thought the bass couldn't get any better than that. I am an avid trance music listener and boy do these earphones do the music justice! Bass is impressing strong and the clarity is just right on these. I have to say, I have tried $400 earphones before (bose and monster) and they were all junk. Also, they include noise cancellation ear pieces which work really really well if you are within a noisy environment.

I am not disappointed one bit at all and I highly recommend it for any avid electronic dance music listeners.

Sony just never seems to disappoint when it comes to audio equipment!

I like quality music and I own around 20 different ear- or headphones. There was a phase in my life when I blindly believed that higher price for a brand definitely guarantees the quality. Well I was wrong obviously, I know it by now but then I didn't. Even though many of my ear- or headphones were pretty expensive ($100 - $300) it not always sounded as premium as price tag was implying. So I ended up with 2 different sets of Bowers & Wilkins ($200 - $300), Turbines by Monster ($250), Beats by Dr.Dre ($300), couple of Denons ($80 - $200), couple of Klipsch ($75 - $150), two different AKG's (both around 150 Euros), pair of Shure, pair of Japanese Audiotechnika, two pairs of Bose ($200 each) and of course quite a few pairs of Sony in different price ranges. It took a long way for me to realize that I am overpaying for a well promoted brands. And the last drop that filled the cup of my patience was purchasing Bose phones (ear and head). Oh, man, it was so bad experience so I got rid of them as soon as I could (the earphones lacked high frequency by far from anything I tried before and headphones just did not have any bass regardless the settings). So for a while I stopped buying any headphones and tried to enjoy what I had. Interesting fact that one of my most favorite earphones was pair of Klipsch that cost only... $75. And one of the least preferred was $300 Bowers & Wilkins over head phones. Thus I started looking at some products below $100 range without prejudice of bad quality. I ran into XB90EX by accident on the internet forums and after reading LOTS of nice reviews finally got it. At that point I kind of lost interest to higher quality headphones as nothing else could surprise or impress me.Read more ›
