I've been using Sony in-ear phones for a little over a decade now and there's been quite a worrying pattern to my experience, where the XB90EX comes in as one of the "awesomely great" generations.

Let me quickly go through my history of experiences with Sony in-ear phones (it started with the white MDR EX-70) so you might understand what I'm getting at:

MDR-EX70: awesomely great, first in-ear phones I've ever had.
MDR-EX71: about as good as the EX70, including the white cables that turn an ugly yellow-ish colour after 2 years.
MDR-EX85: were not as good as I expected them to be, but a decent improvement over the previous.
MDR-EX500: GREAT! These things blew me away totally. Whole new sound experience.
MDR-EX510: HUGE disappointment (meager bass) at a ridiculously higher price point. The most ridiculously-priced of all!
MDR-XB90EX: ABSOLUTELY AMAZING and yet almost half the price off of what I paid for the EX510!

See the pattern? It seems that the quality jumps up every other generation or so. Thank God my 510s held up (until I lost them just two days ago.. hence I got the XB90s) and I skipped the ridiculously overpriced XBA line. The XBA line does NOT sound worlds better than the meager 510s I had (In fact, the XBA-2 was the most decent sounding of the XBA line, on par with my 500s).

WHAT a HUGE improvement these XB90EXs are over ANY of the in-ear models I've ever had (or tested)!! Even the Sony Store salesperson recommended these over the ridiculously-overpriced XBA line. The drivers in the xb90s are 16mm -- larger than any of the others (typically at 13.5mm). It makes for a world of difference. The price point is an absolute treat as well. Cheaper than my 510s (MUCH cheaper!!) and just a little more than what my 500s cost me.

I've been using the Monster Carbine and Beats Tour before I decided to purchase this earbud.
My beats decided to give up on me so I was looking for a good replacement, and after spending weeks on many different review sites, amazon, and other site including head-fi.org
After a VERY long extensive search, I decided to purchase a Sony earbud.
These XB90EX are imports from Japan so it is very difficult to find a legitimate review of an audiophile online, but I stumbled upon a forum post in head-fi.org which talked about these which definitely helped me make up my mind.
Now, I've been using them for a little over a month and I cant ever go back to my Turbines.
The Sub Bass of the buds are very booming, which feels like a subwoofer in the buds. Note that I said sub bass.
It's a booming sound which I haven't heard in any other previous earbuds I've used before.
The ones from monster, and my older Radius DDM 2 (HP TWF21) which all promises superior bass sounds like nothing after using these. They are a bit big and sticks out of your ears, but the sound is very premium for an IEM.
the cables are also flat designed and definitely feels like high quality materials, but they are a little thinner than the tours.
So that was a short review from a non audiophile, I can promise you that these blow every other earbuds away that are in a higher price range, including the monster carbines, beats tour and the DDM2.

I previously had owned various Sony headphones & always have loved them. Sony always hits the sweet spot by coming up with budget headphones which appeal to masses.
Previous to this I owned MRDXB300 which had a 13.5 mm driver it sounded awesome, clear in every aspect. Highs, lows & bass was very good. They gave up on me after 3 years of everyday use, they still work fine but the plastic piece covering the headphone body came off.
I was searching some for good headphones when I stumbled upon these babies. Being sony I did not doubt the quality but wanted to know the reviews about how they sound. So i searched for some videos & online reviews of these. I found some videos on you tube & few Asian reviews & they were enough to make my decision to go for these.
These are not available in US you can import them from JAPAN. In US, the model MDR XB60EX is available which has the 13.5 mm drivers. As these had 16 mm drivers I was eager to hear the sound difference. I don't think there are many 16mm in ear buds present out there.

I received these on time like in 5 days total. Awesome shipping. I went with the expedited shipping as I did not wanted to wait for 20-25 days for delivery & also you do not get any tracking for regular shipping.

Unboxed them put them in my ear & started playing my favourite track which has a good amount of bass & man I experienced something I had never had experienced. The sound stage is nice & wide, highs, mids are perfect & the bass - you got to hear it for your self. It feels like a sub placed in ears. !!!!! AWESOME !!!!.
The 16 mm drivers definitely makes a lot of difference.
My best ear buds till date.

I've never written a review for anything but I'm compelled to do so for these gems. For a few years I've been a fan of Sony's xb (extra bass) range. I have the in ear xb 40s, 41s, and now 90s. I also have the superb over the head xb500. So I know this range. Yes I have had top end Bose and Sennheisser.
Enough with the background now to the product. From the xb 40s I thought that it couldn't get any better but every new version is a significant improvement from the previous one. So much so that I never go back to the old ones. To test and compare headphones I use the same track, James Blake's limit of your love. The 40s set the new standard of achieving sub bass that you only find with over the head cans. The 41s had the bass plus the mid range which was brought forward so the vocals wasn't swamped by the bass. What more can Sony do as they've nailed it with the 41s.
Enter the xb90s. Omgg! The 90s are even better. By increasing the size of the drivers they get a bigger better sound. Kinda logical if you think about it. There is now a soundstage to talk of. Noticeable separation of vocals and instruments, with stereo affects clearly reproduced. The sound is all around you and not just concentrated in the middle of your head like all in ears. Can these really be called in ears as the 16mm drivers sit outside. Amazingly Sony have manage to retain the acclaimed bass with quality mids, but have made a significant improvement in integrating bass, mids and treble. The bass doesn't dominate the sound unless you increase it. And when you do, oh wow! The bass extension is sooOO good. From rock bass guitars, to sub bass of dnb and the hard 909 drum of techno these buds deliver and them some.
