Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is the first story I have read by this author and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Mean is a novelette which is packed with story. (...) This story is a dark psychological thriller with plenty of twists and turns, I read the story in one sitting because it had me captivated from the beginning to the end."  Becky Sherriff -(The Kindle Book Review)

About the Author

Renata F. Barcelos lives in Brazil with her beautiful and creative daughter and teaches English and Spanish as Second Languages.

She loves dark, twisted and flawed characters and stories. She watches way too much TV and reads perhaps too many (almost exclusively) mystery novels, convincing herself it's all work - research for her own stories.

She writes for as long as she can remember, and has three books published: "Mean: A Psychological Thriller Novelette", "My Sore Hush-a-Bye" and "Merge".

She's now working on a new novel called "Myself in Blue".

Mean is a great little novelette. A young woman starts to see a psychologist because she is worried that her meanness is going to drive her to commit murder, a murder that she hopes the psychologist can guide her to avoid committing. The murder that the young woman feels compelled to commit, however is not random but specific to a person who she feels is responsible for having ruined her life. As the story unfolds, more details of the young woman's horrific past are revealed, building to a carefully constructed crescendo of calculated madness. This is a compelling, well written read and a true psychological thriller!

This author wrote an excellent, very intense, emotional, psychological thriller...It's written and narrated by the main character all the way through the novella...What made this story unique, was like you were a fly on the wall listening into private Psychiatic Sessions...With a slow build of suspense, the 24 yr old girl's story starts to unfold all the way to the last Session #9... This will leave the readers and even the Pyschiatrist in the story shocked at the very end..

Cassandra has been visiting pyschiatic doctors since she has been maybe 14 yrs old, looking for a way to control her deep hate and anger issues that keep trying to boil over...So, far she is lucky, and they are just simmmering at the surface...While you are listening into Cassie's sessions, you hear about her horrific, physically and mentally abusive childhood she and her siblings endured...It will give you chills....You see her mother, Celeste is a bipolar, psychopathic murderer.......

Psychiatrists are trained not to judge, be objective, try to teach coping skills and maintain your cool at all times, not just hand out prescriptions...So, Cassie knows she has this "meanness" inside of her and she is just looking for a little help...

Let's hope she's found the right "Doctor" this time....

I highly recommend this story to any one that is looking for different pyschological thrillers...You will not be disappointed by this one......

`Mean' totally blew me away. This novelette was so filled with entertainment. It's the story of a young woman who is turning to the help of a psychiatrist because she thinks this meanness inside of her is going to take over. The story is told in her point of view and the doctor never speaks in the book. It is simply Cassandra's twisted mind speaking, a one sided book. From the very first doctor's session the story was crazy. It just took off and was filled with such a crazy story, with twists and turns, that I couldn't stop reading it. I mean this girl's life was truly insanity at its best.

I read through this novelette very quickly. I just couldn't wait to see what Cassandra decided to do.

Then at the end, wow, what a shocker, I did not see that coming. I expected it to be something crazy but not THAT crazy. It was pure brilliance, I really loved this story. It was one of my favorites this year. I just found all of it fascinating.

What I liked:
The idea behind this novelette was a very nice one – simple yet captivating. I truly enjoyed getting to know Cassandra and her horrible family. I was also immediately interested in the identity of her potential victim. I didn’t mind the first person narration much because it helped creating an illusion the reader is actually a shrink. Some things Cassandra had been through sent a thrill down my spine and the more she told the more I wanted to know.
The best feature of this one was actually Cassandra herself – such a nice, intelligent girl with such a dark, twisted, narcissistic mind. She kept me wondering: was it because of her horrible childhood or was it because of her gene pool or maybe both ? Nurture or nature? I loved the ambiguity of her situation: she was not only a potential killer but also a victim; she was so self-centered and narcissistic she hardly noticed how much harm she was doing to herself. Still she remained perceptive enough to pursue a successful career and to plan a murder in a really clever way.
What I didn’t like:
Perhaps I have a dangerous mind but I guessed pretty quickly who Cassandra wanted to kill. Still I didn’t know why till the very end so it didn’t spoil my pleasure. An my main carping: this novelette would be far nicer if it was turned into a novel, with a richer characterization of the main lead and some other characters added in the background.
Final verdict:
A nice, short, intelligent read. Next time I want a fully-fledged novel, though! Preferably with Cassie as a main character as well because her story is not over, is it?

This story was a real page turner. I just kept reading until the end. I never would have guessed who the intended victim was, which is unusual for me, as I read a lot of mysteries. The story kept me on the edge of my seat. It was masterfully written. I would highly recommend it to any mystery and suspense fan. I look forward to more stories by Renata F.Barcelona.

More About the Author

Renata F. Barcelos lives in Brazil with her teenager daughter, Maria, constantly complaining about the heat and dreaming of moving somewhere snowy.

She has a Law Degree, but promises never to use it. She prefers to study and teach languages and to write. Facing a three-hour daily commute, Renata uses this time to listen to audiobook after audiobook, plot, and write. Sometimes she hurts herself walking and writing at the same time--forgetting to look where she's going.

Her characters usually don't respect her wishes, taking the stories to places she never imagined they could go; she loves it when that happens.

Renata is always working on a new novel, and so far has published the books Mean, My Sore Hush-a-Bye, Merge, and the Myself in Blue series.
