I highly recommend this device. The mosquitos hit my property early every year, and plague me right into the middle of autumn. I live in South Florida and bought the newest Ultra model in Sept. 2005. We have a serious asian tiger mosquito (they kind of look striped) problem here. These mosquitos are very aggressive and bite 24 hours a day. I am allergic to mosquito bites and blow up like hives soon after. We have a pretty big yard with lots of tropical landscaping and places for them to breed...

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Mosquito Trap, April 26, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

I highly recommend this device. The mosquitos hit my property early every year, and plague me right into the middle of autumn. I live in the woods, and lounging on my deck for the past couple years has been impossible without dousing myself in deet, citronella, or some other chemical applied to my skin. I've shopped consistently for an effective mosquito trap, and have read extensively about all the offerings on the market. In fact, I had saved up some money over the past two years to purchase the vastly more expensive, propane-driven Mosquito Magnet, which is made by a company based right here in New England. After reading about all the problems people have had with the Mosquito Magnet valves (and parts melting in certain cases), I went with the Mega Catch Ultra instead. I am very glad I did. It works wonderfully, and for hundreds less. I caught about 700 mosquitos in the first few days, and more than a thousand over the next week after that. It also got a few moths, but that's fine with me as that prevents them from getting in my house to eat my wool carpets and suits. The only problem I had with the device was that the UV bulb burned out within two weeks. However, I called the Sportsman's Guide, who was the actual vendor from whom I purchased through Amazon.com, and their customer service people were very helpful, promising that I would have a new bulb within the next 14 days. I am very happy with the Mega Catch Ultra, as my deck is now mosquito free. Better yet, I haven't even hooked up the CO2; the entire catch has been without the use of any gas so far (a tank of CO2 runs about $125.00 here in New England, and I'm saving my money for another Mega Catch Ultra).

5.0 out of 5 stars It does work, June 13, 2005
This review is from: Mega-Catch Ultra Mosquito Trap (Kitchen)
I do not have stock in, nor do I sell the above item. This item works. I run it from 3pm to 9am each day. I have done so without a problem for 3 months. I live in Florida where there is a serious tiger mosquito problem. We have found the mega catch to be absolutely unbelievable. At first we didn't use the CO2. We caught a fair amount of bugs. With the CO2, we starting catching many more...and the vast majority are mosquitos. I can't say that the mosquito problem is irradicated, but I can say that at least we can go outside, enjoy the pool, BBQ, and not get 10 bites each time (in the middle of the day!). I would say that in the span of 3 days, I catch 100's of mosquitos. The real test will be in August when the problem is even more severe. If I can go outside without fear in August, then the machine has made a difference. If the website allows, I will re post in August with an update. I can't imagine that it won't be different given the number of mosquitos caught (no see ums as well)

thanks

5.0 out of 5 stars Mega catch exceeded expectations, June 8, 2005

Last season I had a Magnet that caused me so much trouble that ,after a lot of research,I decided to buy a Megacatch Ultra. It has been so easy to operate and is catching more bugs than the old machine ever did.I got a CO2 cylinder from Luxfer($95)and get it refilled at the local Praxair shop. It's been running four hours in the late afternoon and 3 hours in the morning. It catches more bugs in the bucket than I can count.I have convinced three of my good friends that this is the best trap to buy after they saw the number of dead bugs when they came to a BBQ last week.

3.0 out of 5 stars mega catch ultra review, October 10, 2005
This review is from: Mega-Catch Ultra Mosquito Trap (Kitchen)
I live in South Florida and bought the newest Ultra model in Sept. 2005. We have a serious asian tiger mosquito (they kind of look striped) problem here. These mosquitos are very aggressive and bite 24 hours a day. I am allergic to mosquito bites and blow up like hives soon after. We have a pretty big yard with lots of tropical landscaping and places for them to breed and hide. Essentially, the machine works but I have a few complaints.

First, I used it without the C02 for 2 weeks and it only caught moths and other harmless insects. With the C02 it caught about 60 mosquitos in 3 days (mostly asian tiger mosquitos), too many no-see-ums to count and some other bugs I didn't recognize. The 20lb CO2 tank costs about $120 and $20 to fill it. I didn't know this but you will pay $120 or so initially for a used tank that they switch out for $20 every time you need a refill so they don't actually refill "your" tank. Local companies will be cheaper (look under industrial gas suppliers in your phone book). Praxair wanted more money and was quite a drive for me.

Second, the machine is very cheaply made with cheap plastics presumably in some third world country. The cheap plastic door that must be opened each time to clean the catch bag is very inconvenient since it has no hinges and must be pulled out and squeezed in each time. The lock and key is also made of this flexible low grade plastic material. You would think that for $450 or so they could afford to put a real door on this thing. Also, my machine arrived with a defective regulator (very poorly made). I called the local number on the limited warranty and they wanted to sell me a new regulator or have the manufacturer get back to me. I hung up and sent the manufacturer a direct email and a new regulator was sent to me in two weeks. By the way the company is located in New Zealand hence the two weeks. The rep who sent me the new regulator requested that I send him the defective one back. They did not include a paid envelope so the shipping cost of sending it back and hassle would be enough to convince you to just buy a new regulator from the local distributor for $25 more. Because of the poor workmanship, I don't think the machine will last very long but who knows.

All that being said and done, the machine catches a lot of mosquitos. I don't think anything could totally eliminate them but it has been raining all week and I was outside for a half hour today during dusk before one found me. I'm assuming they are coming from farther away? Also no swarms. I used to get swarmed by a group of them. One or two I can deal with. The manual says it takes 6-8 weeks to break the breeding cycle so I am curious to see what will happen then. (...)

5.0 out of 5 stars This Product really works, June 6, 2005
This review is from: Mega-Catch Ultra Mosquito Trap (Kitchen)
I have two Ultras and they really work well. This year we have been able to use our deck while our neighbors have been driven inside by mosquitoes. What is really impressive is the manufacturers customer service. When we had a problem we rang the service centre number and the manufacturer rang back a few hours later and immediately identified the problem. A few days later we recieved a new part and some complimentary accessories. This is the best warranty service we have ever received and we have recommended Mega-Catch to several of our friends who have also bought Ultra traps.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works for me, July 20, 2005

This review is from: Mega-Catch Ultra Mosquito Trap (Kitchen)
A reviewer stated that all of the favorable comments may have been written by folks who work for Mega-Catch, so I decided to write this. I'm a CFO for a small manufacturing concern in Southern NH and took a chance on the Ultra model for two reasons: 1) it was half the price of the competition and 2) I was optimistic that claims made on their website were true (this was the risky part of the decision). I don't have the CO2 hooked up yet and still caught a fair amount of mosquitos. Hard to say, but let me estimate @ 50 - 75 per night? I don't really have too bad of a mosquito problem since I was throwing those doughnuts into the various water sources all around, so I'm not expecting hundreds per night. My wife swells up something awful, so I really bought this for her. I just received a 20 lb. CO2 tank ($100) and will hook that up soon. I can get it filled for about $19. I most certainly expect to catch even more critters...and will report back with my results. When I received the unit, one of the internal connections was disconnected, so I had to take it apart and reconnect...wasn't happy that I had to do that, but it worked fine after that so it's water under the bridge. I bought mine on Amazon for $250 and think that's a great deal considering the competition. My gut feeling is this unit works at least as good as the competition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Less then 2 weeks for significant results!, August 2, 2009
By
padirescu (West Palm Beach, FL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mega-Catch Ultra Mosquito Trap (Kitchen)
We've lived in South Florida for the past 3 years in a relatively rural area with many canals. Until this summer our mosquito concentration was what I would consider reasonable and you could easily spend time outdoors without being swarmed upon. However this summer, due to an above average rainy season, our mosquito problem became unbearable to the extent that as soon as you walked outside anywhere from 3-5 mosquito's would be on you within a few seconds. With an 18 month old daughter who is wanting to play more and more outside, we decided it was time to try and do something about our mosquito infestation. After researching the various options on the market, we decided to go with the Mega Catch Ultra for a few reasons. First, almost all of the reviews I saw were positive compared to other brands and models on the market. Second, I liked the idea of actually using direct CO2 rather then having to burn propane to produce it like some models. Although we were ready to give the Mega Catch Ultra a try, I still had some reservations about the effectiveness of any system like this given our environment and the size of my property. We live on 1.3 acres and since the advertised effective range was 1.5 acres, I was suspect on whether this system would be effective for my entire property.

We setup the system with the optional CO2 tank along with the "wet" catch can solution without the Octenol strips (per recommendations in the manual) about 2 weeks ago and placed it in the back left corner of our property about 40 feet behind our guest house. The manual said to not to expect significant results for 6-8 weeks but in our case it took less then 2. We change the catch can solution every other day and have been running it on full auto since we set it up. I can literally walk outside and ANYWHERE on my property day or night now and I literally haven't seen a mosquito in days (outside of those we dump out from the catch can of course). To sum it up, this thing has worked beyond my wildest expectations and I would recommend anyone with a significant mosquito problem to invest in it. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for, and while the price may be a little steep for most, I can assure you it is worth every penny.

1.0 out of 5 stars Does not appear to do anything, June 3, 2005
This review is from: Mega-Catch Ultra Mosquito Trap (Kitchen)
I have had this machine up and running for a week and caught about 7 mosquitos and there is no lack of mosquitos in my yard! I did not hook up the carbon dioxide cylinder since it would cost me about $90 to buy and another $20 to fill. I can't take the chance of putting more money into this. I am going to return this to Sportsmans and eat the loss of shipping costs.

As a side note, I am thinking that the only two positive reviews on this are by people selling them. I have looked all over the internet and can't find anything positive except on the seller's website.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ultra 3 years old and still going strong, May 14, 2005
This review is from: Mega-Catch Ultra Mosquito Trap (Kitchen)
I have 4 Ultras on my property, the oldest of which is 3 years old and they are all going strong. The traps are made from weatherproof polypropylene(which is virtually indestructible) with stainless steel and brass fittings which explains the cost.Like any machine they need to be properly maintained. At the end of each season I clean the inside and outside of the traps in accordance with the operating manuals and store them inside over winter.I recommend that if you have a problem/query go direct to the manufacturer (info@megacatch.com) rather than the dealer.

2.0 out of 5 stars Does not work well for Asian Tiger mosquitos, May 28, 2005
This review is from: Mega-Catch Ultra Mosquito Trap (Kitchen)
Despite claims it just doesn't work well against Asian tiger mosquitos. I don't think any unit will. These mosquitos seem to get attracted to mainly by visually seeing your movement amongst others.

I've seen the mosquitos get attracted to the unit at times (usually in the evening) and are all over it, but don't get inside the unit for whatever reason. I've tried using just pure electiric mode and CO2 as well, just doesn't work in Austin, TX.

I'm back to spraying the bayer's mosquito-b-gone thing on the bushes and grass. That works very well, if done right and periodically. Doesn't ever get rid of them completely but reduces to a great extent in just a day or two.
