2.0 out of 5 stars Some good info, but seriously out of date
While this book definitely has some useful information, it's seriously out of date when it comes to using hormones to avoid or diminish menopause. Clearly this book came out before the studies that proved using these hormones would increase a woman's risk of breast cancer significantly. It does seem to focus on hormone replacement as a coping message throughout, which...

5.0 out of 5 stars Survival, Support, and Intimacy, April 5, 2007
This review is from: MEN-opause: The Book for Men (Paperback)
Dr. Mike Goodman has written a survival guide for men. In seven concise, informative chapters Dr. Goodman offers insight into the complex interaction of man's midlife crisis experience with the woman's menopause symptoms.

In easy to understand layman's terms, written for men, Dr. Mike helps the reader understand menopause, how it affects his partner, help available, the impact on their sex life, hints on being helpful, and the male change of life.

In a conversational style Dr. Goodman guides the reader in ways to support his partner's menopause, to improve sexual intimacy, and to end up with a stronger relationship. He outlines the issues, and explains the physiology. An entire chapter is dedicated to providing pointers on "How to be Useful", things that are "Not Useful" and "What to do When Nothing Will Help."

Dr. Goodman as a Certified Menopausal Practitioner and sex therapist is well qualified to author this book. He writes with a unique understanding of both a woman's and man's perspectives. His remarkable communication skills enable him to convey knowledge in an enjoyable writing style.

"MEN-opause is an exceptional, highly readable book for men in transition, those men in, or facing, their own midlife crisis while trying to understand their partner's menopause.

While this book definitely has some useful information, it's seriously out of date when it comes to using hormones to avoid or diminish menopause. Clearly this book came out before the studies that proved using these hormones would increase a woman's risk of breast cancer significantly. It does seem to focus on hormone replacement as a coping message throughout, which makes it considerable less useful than expected.

4.0 out of 5 stars Men Should Read This, January 12, 2009

This review is from: MEN-opause: The Book for Men (Paperback)
As the author points out, there appears to be a dearth of advice and help for men with a partner who is going through menopause. This book provides a practical and caring guide for those men, including both ways in which men can empathize, and suggestions for medication that might help the situation.
