Classic Car Mart, April 2007

Veloce Publishing’s list of Essential Buyer’s Guides continues to grow, although this latest addition to the range – dedicated to the MGB and MGB GT – looks set to be one of the best sellers of the line-up.

The idea behind these books is simple. They’re small enough to fit in any car’s glove box, and are therefore ideal for taking along with you when viewing that classic you’re thinking of buying. Oh, and they’re affordable enough for just about everyone.

What you see is what you get. There’s no seductive layout or expensive hardback cover on offer here. But that’s no bad thing, because each of these little books is simply packed with all the information you’ll need before going ahead and buying the classic of your choice.

We’ve all read buyers’ guides to MGBs in classic car magazines before, but this particular book goes into far greater detail within its 64 pages than any single article could. And with such specific chapter headings as Living With An MGB, Fifteen Minute Evaluation, Relative Values, Paint Problems, Cost Considerations and Vital Statistics on offer here, you shouldn’t go far wrong.

At just $19.99, any prospective MGB owner would be well advised to grab a copy before they go shopping.

Classic Car Mart, December 2006, UK
Any addition to Veloce Publishing’s ever-expanding range of Essential Buyer’s Guides is usually worth a mention, and this – dedicated to the classic Alfa Romeo Spider – is no exception.

The great thing about these books is that they really are inexpensive. Just £9.99 buys you a copy, and for that you get a 64-page softback title packed with vital information and advice on buying your vehicle of choice.

You wouldn’t buy these books for their artistic layout, stunning photography or witty text, but to criticise them for that would be to miss the point entirely. They’re small enough to fit in your glovebox and to take with you when viewing a classic for sale; and the writing style and layout are so simple and logical that flicking through for on-the-spot information couldn’t be easier.

In this instance, you’ll find a full introduction to the living with a Giulia Spider, plus separate chapters dedicated to all the various aspects of buying one with confidence. Chapter headings like ‘Is It The Right Car For You?’, ‘Fifteen Minute Evaluation’, ‘Do You Really Want To Restore’ and ‘Problems Due To Lack Of Use’ give an idea of the detail throughout, which is pretty reassuring from such a low-priced title. In fact, bearing in mind the compactness of the book, the level of detail is very impressive.

As the authors say of the Spider, ‘Within twenty-eight years of manufacture, there should be a model to suit everyone’. If that’s true, you’d be well advised to take a copy of this book along with you when viewing any Spider that’s for sale. Quite simply, it does exactly what it says on the cover.

MGB Driver, Journal of the North American MGB Register, August 2007

Many of you reading this either met or at least saw the author of this book, Roger Williams, at MG 2006. He gave several talks on modifying MGBs for V8 power and other topics. In this book, Roger uses his fantastic eye for detail to give the reader the most complete guide to buying a MGB or MGB/GT that has ever been published.

Full color throughout, there are dozens of close-up pictures that show specifically what to look for as well as pictures showing what it might look like beneath the surface of that suspicious looking rocker panel.

Other than a very brief overview of the production history of the MGB, the book does stray off of its intended purpose: How to determine if the car you are considering to buy or restore is worth your time, money, and love. He even starts off the book on the right foot by asking if the car is right for you. He gives the reader a list of realistic considerations to make before even going further.

Among the pages in the rest of the book is a 15 minute inspection guide, a second, more in-depth inspection guide, buying at auction tips, paperwork that you should expect to get with the car (this is more centered to UK readers, but you'll get the idea), and a discussion on what problems you can expect to encounter with a car that has sat for a while no matter what its condition.

Like the MGB Driver, The Essential Buyer's Guide: MGB MGB/GT is sized to fit inside a glovebox so it can be conveniently left in your car for quick reference. I would make buying this book mandatory for any first time MGB or MGB/GT buyer if I could. I would also recommend any long time enthusiast to purchase a copy as well just to help keep a check on our hearts when considering additions to our collections.

This review is from: MG MGB & MGB GT: The Essential Buyer's Guide (Paperback)
As a recent buyer of a 1973 MG, I needed the book to deal with the car I got (a great set of wheels, BTW). I've taken this book in for the 1 (!) time in a year that the car went to the shop and it was very helpful to the 21st century mechanic to orient him to the 20th (19th?) century mechanical details of the car.
