5.0 out of 5 stars Simple and Practical
I've tried the Evans muffle rings. I've tried the Rem-O's. I've tried paper towels taped onto the head. None of them compare to Moongel, because Moongel is the most effective and simple. 3.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat good
I got these as a gift, and they do muffle drums, but can pick up dust and dirt quickly, they do not stick as in gloopy but attack and do not slip on a drum surface. They do muffle the echo which is good, but I believe there is better than this.
Overall they do their job, butt they are not a life saver.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: MG4 Moon Gel Drum Damper Pads
I've tried the Evans muffle rings. I've tried the Rem-O's. I've tried paper towels taped onto the head. None of them compare to Moongel, because Moongel is the most effective and simple. Not only are they small and easy to apply, but they can be just as helpful as the muffle rings. The great part is the fact that you can alter how much you want to muffle, as well as the drum pitch merely by moving the pad around the head, and closer/further from the center of the head. It's as simple as that, and it leaves much room for custom sound shaping.
The very reasonably priced pack comes in a portable, cute little thingy with 4 Moongel pads inside. Priced at a little over a buck per gel, these are most definiely the best bang for your buck. As a special bonus, they are reusable even after extensive use. All it takes is a simple soap and water wash, and you're good to go again. Considering the fact that each pad can be reused about 5 or 6 times, that's 4 drums muffled for a couple years for a mere 6 dollars! You can't go wrong with RTOM's Moongel, ladies and gentlemen. You just can't.

Hope this was helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product, but a bit pricey, August 24, 2007

I used some of these on a session a while back, and thought they worked great. But, when I bought some myself, I was a little surprised to pay $10. I'm a recording engineer, so they don't last as long as they might if you left them on one kit forever. Anyway, I quickly realized they were made of the same stuff as those sticky 'wallwalker' type toys that you see at the grocery store. So, I spent $1, and used some scissors to cut a toy octopus into pieces. They work great, and at that price, I can let drummers keep them. Plus, I kind of like the tentacle shape. I find that as you move the pad towards the center of the drum, the sound gets tighter and less ringy. Putting one of these just outside of the center of a very ringy snare will tame it better than tape, o-rings, or anything else I've heard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't beat the flexibility, March 6, 2009

Rim (Alexandria, VA) - See all my reviews

The best things about these are their flexibility - you can customize how much dampening to suit your taste. I actually like the Remo rings and if you put these gels near the rim, they sound the same as the Remo to me. But, if you wanted more dampening, just move the gels further from the rims (closer to the center). With Remos, you have one dampening level and that's it. Also, unlike rings, you don't have to worry about getting the right size for your drums.

Each container has four gel pads and I use four gel pads for each drum. I put them about a half inch off the rim and equidistant from each other at 12 o'clock, at 3 o'clock, at 6 o'clock and at 9 o'clock. Feel free to rotate that pattern or even change the pattern altogether to suit your playing style and taste. For my snare (aluminum), I like more dampening so the gels are 3/4 inch off the rim (and I start the patter at 2:30 so they're more out of the way). For my floor tom, I have them almost 1.5 inches off the rim. Since the floor tom drum is big anyway, the gels don't get in the way of my playing. I haven't tried it, but I would guess I could get the same level of dampening if I moved the gels closer to the rims but used more of them (6 total may work or even 8 total). I really like the extra dampening I can get with these on my snare and floor tom.

I've only reused them once (took them off then put them back on) and they seem fine. One trick I found useful was to stagger the gels in a criss cross pattern when putting them back in their plastic case. They originally came stacked (lined up) and I was a little scared of ripping them while I was pulling them apart. None ripped, but putting them back in the case in a criss cross pattern made separating them a lot easier.

The only thing I'm not crazy about is the look - it does look a little weird having these blue things on your drums (my skins are white). If they made clear ones, that would be sweet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moongels really do work!, August 6, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

I bought Moongels to improve the sound of a really cheap begginers drum set and it worked magic on them. I applied the max muffling recommended by RTOM (two gel pieces per head) on the toms and they sound great now. On the bass drum I combined the Evans RGS pad on the batter head with two Moongels on the resonant head and it sounds perfect now!

5.0 out of 5 stars Must-Have for drummers!, July 8, 2008
This review is from: MG4 Moon Gel Drum Damper Pads
If you play drums, especially in the studio, you must have these. Producers and sound engineers should have them, too, in case the drummer you're working with doesn't. They provide the perfect dampening, and you can use more than one for more. Super product. Experiment with placement, location and such for the best sound. Even place it hanging on the rim, so it doesn't fully rest on the head, for just a bit of dampening.

Product was good and simple to use. The only problem was that my package was ripped open. I checked to see if anything was missing but it was all there.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm Stuck On These, February 15, 2012
This review is from: MG4 Moon Gel Drum Damper Pads
MG4 Moon Gel Drum Damper PadsI have to say to the guy(s) that complain about these super globs collecting dirt and dust, Duh, have you tried putting them where they are suppose to go, underneath the drum head, not on top. Look, when applied correctly, they have been the best damping solution I have ever had in my 43 years of playing. Please read my lengthy review on Evans Glass Drum Heads. This one will not be that long. I play hard, very hard, I have a Ludwig Vistalite set, if you know anything about drums you know these kits sound great but have an echo that is hard to calm. I have used many things from rings, old school cloth under the head, nothing works any better and since these are so small, permanent when applied correctly, and hassle free, No matter how hard I play they stay put. Cloth loosens up over time, rings bounce and vibrate, towels thrown in the bass shift after a few hard hits, it's a no brainer. Try the Moongel out, you won't go back to anything else.
