We gave this to our two-and-a-half year old son for Christmas, and it's been his favorite present by far. Right now he just enjoys hearing the music and making the cuckoo cow pop out, but it also has great educational value for later on when he's ready to learn how to tell time. There is a digital clock readout at the bottom that displays whatever time the hands are set to, and the voice says it out loud as well. Plus, the timer function is great for when we tell him he has a certain amount of time left to play. You can set it anywhere between one to fifteen minutes, and the cow moos once at each minute before popping out and cuckooing when time is up.

As annoying as the "cuckoo moo" can be, it makes me laugh every time. My 26 mo old nephew enjoys it, too. Pushing the yellow button you can set the clock to go off from 1 to 15 minutes -- with a quick "moo" once each minute until the cow pops out and goes "cuckoo moo." (I imagine this could be used to give a clean-up time or bed-time warning.) Press the red button and the cow pops out and goes "cuckoo moo" 3 times and then the time is given according to wherever the hands on the clock are set. It cuckoos 3 times whether the time is 1:00, 3:00, or 10:00 (or 6:40 or 8:20, etc.) -- so in that respect, it's not like a "real" clock. Each time you press the green button one of three songs will play - rather short and not obnoxious -- my nephew and I will dance to the music and then "freeze" when it stops.
The clock also has "quiz" mode where it says, "show me the time x" -- after moving the hands to that time, you push one of the buttons at the top, the cow will "cuckoo moo" 3 times and then the time is given. There is also a digital readout at the bottom that matches whatever time is shown on the clock face. My purpose in this purchase wasn't to teach a 2 year old how to tell time, but because he was fascinated both by clocks and cows and I couldn't resist the combination of the two in this clock. And, again, it makes me laugh because it's just so silly.

Fun way to teach time!, January 11, 2008

Our four-year old loves this toy so much we've bought others for birthday presents! The quiz mode is great, and having analog and digital match up makes this a much better teaching tool than some of the other toy clocks on the market. The sound is not too loud, and the music isn't annoying.
