Tech Training for Your Little Moviemaker-To-Be
It might start with a passion for fashion--the Bratz motto--but the next thing you know your kid will be going from debutante balls to directorial debuts. First, the fashion--Sharidan comes ready for her Oscar in a sparkly silver floor-length gown and opera-length gloves. She can stand on her own if carefully balanced, but her high-heel shoes also snap onto a star-shaped stand for easier posing. There's also a brush for important touch-ups.
Next, the technology--the kit comes with a small, focusable digital camera in the style of a reel-to-reel film camera. The camera can be hand held or easily attached to the small, swiveling tripod. The camera has a viewfinder, but to see the whole image and for easier editing, you need to plug the camera into your home TV with the included video cable. The camera's internal memory stores around 60 shots from the get-go; to expand narrative scope, you can add an SD card (not included) to the back, up to 1 GB in size. To save the movie, the supplied USB cable plugs the camera directly into your PC running Windows 98 SE/ME, Windows 2000, or Windows XP, or your Mac running OS 10.2.8 or earlier--or use your own SD card reader. The kit doesn't come with any software, so you'll have to use whatever your computer has already. The toy set is covered by a 90-day limited warranty.
Filming Debut--Test Run
This toy is immediately engaging--maneuver the doll's 14 posable joints, work the camera, and watch the movie magic all come together. The kit is easy to set up: All you need is a Phillips head screwdriver and three AA batteries (not included). Without using a TV, the camera's side viewfinder is very approximate; but placing the Bratz doll at the recommended 14 inches away sets you up for a pretty good shot. The camera was sometimes a little wobbly on the tripod, but you don't have to take the shot until you're ready. You'll need quite a bit of light to get a good image, but that's true of any real camera or movie set. The best part about this toy is that it encourages kids to develop creativity, patience, and technical know-how in a very fun way. And if Sharidan's talents wear thin, the camera can make stop-motion and regular movies of any other subject that captures your budding filmmaker's imagination.

EVERY LITTLE BRATZ' FAN SHOULD HAVE THIS TOY. I PURCHASED THIS TOY FOR MY 10 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WHO STAYED UP UNTIL 2 IN THE MORNING ON CHRISTMAS PLAYING WITH IT. THE SET UP IS REAL EASY AND THE KIDS ENJOY MAKING AND POSING THE BRATZ DOLLS TO MAKE A MOVIE.

I got this because of our family's enjoyment of stop motion animation on YouTube and my DD10's desire to make her own movies. The problem is the company is not marketing the toy very well! The commercials don't do it justice. The camera is much more technically savvy than I would have thought. My biggest concern was that you would only have the ability to do 5 shots and that's it. Well, on its own, the capacity is 17 pictures. But the camera includes a memory card slot and when you separately purchase a 1GB memory card (can't go higher than that according to instructions) the picture capacity jumps to 1500. Plenty to do a movie! It plugs directly into your television so you can see your shot on the big screen before taking the picture. Don't expect amazing digital pictures... it IS still a toy. If you want high quality, you still need a name brand high-end digital camera. But for entertainment purposes for a young kid, this has been one of the best Xmas gifts this year by far. The only disappointment, and it's a small one, is one of the plastic tripod legs keep popping out of its joints. It doesn't really support the camera, fortunately it's just for show. The camera can be removed from the tripod - we usually just prop it up on books and DVDs, and the tripod has been tossed to the side. I was originally going to get the Lego camera set, but they've discontinued it - and with the way they're marketing this one, I'm guessing it won't have a long shelf life either... which is a shame. I have a hard time finding toys nowadays that are both intellectually stimulating AND entertain my child for any length of time.
