4.0 out of 5 stars A Mid Somers Night Dream, December 8, 1999
This review is from: MID-SOMERS NIGHT DREAM (Audio CD)
Impressive debut album! The Somers Dream Orchestra doesn't break any new ground on their first album, but their selections and musicality are true to the originals. All of the musical selections are played with energy and vitality, making for a foot-tapping listen. Many of the songs fit the 'new swing' craze that has swept the nation.

The vocals are particularly refreshing, and are well-placed throughout the album. One can almost imagine a dance hall full of couples swining to the tunes of "Leap Frog", "Woodchopper's Ball", or "On the Street Where You Live".

Although the solos are kept short and sweet, all are thoughfully and professionally presented. Certain selections lend themselves to specific styles, and the soloists obviously had these in mind while crafting their ideas.

Overall a great presentation, and some wonderful listening, reminiscent of the great Big Bands of yesteryear. Definitely a fine addition to anyone's swing library!

I have been following this band for the last three years. Their live performances leave me refreshed, invigorated, and energized. This band is for real!

This new CD captures the essence of their live performances.

I especially like to listen to it on my way to and from work. It gives me a lift every time I hear it. What a way to start and end the day!

This is a CD that you can just lay back and relax to. It is the best big band CD I've heard in a very long time. These people are extremely talented. I hope there is more to come... This CD is phenomenal.

5.0 out of 5 stars New Re-Mastered Edition To Be Released!, August 22, 2001
By
The SOMERS DREAM ORCHESTRA is proud to announce a NEW Re-Mastered 2001 Edition of their critically acclaimed CD, "A Mid-Somers Night Dream." This new edition will soon be available at AMAZON.com! (September, 2001) The group was recently mentioned in BILLBOARD Magazine for a DVD Audio project in production. This activity sparked a candle with our Producer's to Re-Master the December, 1999 release. The end result is outstanding! If you liked our original release, you're going to love this one! The lucky few who have heard the new edition have said, "Sounds rich, full in sound with more depth; it's better than ever!" I hope you enjoy listening, dancing or just share a romantic moment with our 18 piece "swinging" BIG BAND. The Somers Dream Orchestra thanks you. John M. Somers, Bandleader ...

5.0 out of 5 stars if you can't catch a Cab, Calloway, catch this!, July 12, 2000

Silk. The trombone section is woven as tightly as silk on this recording, only the result is smoother than silk. If Cab were alive today, I damn well guarantee he'd prefer the backing of this band to Jake and Elwood's ensemble. From Latin to big band to swing, this band excells at every test. The female vocals (of which there are too few) take you to another plane of emotion. Listen to the sinewy yet sweet accents of the lower brass on every composition. The riveting percussion accentuates this at every turn... If this recording doesn't get you to jump and jive out of your seat then you should have a dozen roses upon your chest as you rest in your vault six feet down!

5.0 out of 5 stars Revitalizing the classics, March 28, 2000
This review is from: MID-SOMERS NIGHT DREAM (Audio CD)
This album has suceeded in bringing out, in our age of modern recording equipment, new renditions of big band classics. It was previously impossible to find high quality recordings performed by quality musicians of many of the tracks on this album. Granted there is not alot of originality here...but, if you like the pieces that made big band famous then you'll love 'A Mid-Somers Night Dream'.

I bought this only because of the name of the leader, trumpeter John Somers, and found it to be excellent fare; high quality performances by a terrific big band--formed apparently by my distant relative (unbeknownst to him). Highly enjoyable. Buy with confidence. Thanks, John and congratulations! Somerses everywhere are mighty proud.
