3.0 out of 5 stars I really wish this book were better written
I have suspected for a long time that milk was an unhealthy toxin-- not just because I am lactose intolerant, not just because I have a nasal allergy to it, not just because from childhood I though it tasted awful. I have always wondered why it would be considered okay to drink the baby food of one other species, cows, but not, say, horses or bonobos. Finally, a book has...

At a time when our government buys huge milk surpluses, corporate giant Monsanto invented a way to get cows to produce more milk. Despite evidence that their invention caused illness in cows (leading to an increased level of antibiotics in their milk) and could cause and accelerate the growth of cancer, Monsanto was able to get their product approved by the FDA BY GETTING TWO KEY RESEARCHERS AND THEIR LAWYER ON THE PROJECT HIRED AT THE FDA. The researchers reviewed their own research, upped the "acceptable" level of antibiotics in milk by 100 times to accommodate their findings and then the lawyer rewrote policies to keep milk from cows treated with the new drug from being labeled, so the American public has been prevented from even knowing what they are drinking. Congress is also involved, accepting donations from the dairy industry and Monsanto. During this time many state laws were passed against disparaging food items, so now in many ways it's actually illegal to COMPLAIN about this (remember Oprah being sued over beef?). In fact, Monsanto actually sued two dairies who advertised they were NOT using the new drug. There are so many conflicts of interest in this story that your blood will boil. Hopefully it will inspire you to act, before Monsanto is able to pay and lie their way into changing the makeup of all our foods, not just milk. The book is a bit repetitive at times and some parts are difficult to read, but it is WELL worth your time. Read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Education is the key to survival so make informed decisions!, September 20, 1998
I perform research in a neuroscience lab at one of the nation's leading medical colleges. Reading Dr. Cohen's book grabbed my attention on several different levels. First, the list of ingredients in a carton of milk: an extensive list of hormones and antibiotics, virus particles, live(antibody-resistant)bacteria, pus, fat, etc. Second, the corruption of the FDA and science as an institution. I was surprised to discover that prestigious scientific journals were used as vehicles (bribed?) to publish results of a pharmaceutical company's highly biased research results (in a jargon-encrypted form). The conclusions of these journals would be cited by non-scientific newspaper journalists, thus giving the conclusions an air of acceptability to the general public. And the practice of "scientists" that work for the drug companies reviewing their own research as employees of the FDA is incredibly unethical. Third, these same publications set precedence for marketing of a genetically-engineered product for human consumption. Forth, a steady stream of multi-media advertising propaganda equal to brainwashing has been going on for decades to sell milk. In fact, milk is strongly implicated to play a major role in heart disease, the nation's number one killer. I was raised on a steady diet of milk and dairy products. If my parents had known then what I know now, I bet that things would have been different. Of all the books I have read in the past 5 years on nutrition, this one has changed my life the most. Inform yourself, you have your health (and life) to lose!

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling and comprehensive review of a national concern., August 4, 1999
By A Customer
The author has passionately described in great detail the thing that most people do not want to hear. Cohen is attacking the the first cousin of apple pie, Mom, and the flag - milk. We all have drank it for years and most don't want to think about giving it up. However, if Mr. Cohen is correct (and I believe he is), you have a responsibilty to yourself and your family to test it out. Mr. Cohen is fighting an uphill battle, but I believe he is causing a groud swell of the population that is taking health into their own hands. The Wall Street Journal's (Aug 3) front page talked about the surge of non dairy milks (soy) and it's continued growing popularity. Read Mr. Cohen's book (stay with it, it isn't easy reading) and you will become convicted to research this topic even further. sjc

5.0 out of 5 stars It doesn't get any better!, August 21, 1998
By A Customer
Because dairy is used by millions of people, the truth, and nothing but the truth, is imperative so consumers can take educated responsibility for their health. The public has been lied to by the Dairy Council, the FDA and Monsanto Chemical Company as respects the bovine growth hormone, including those who are willing to be "funded" to spread the lie. People like the famed late Dr. Spock tried to tell the world about milk. Now here comes Robert Cohen after years of research and concern for public health, with the courage to tell us the truth and nothing but the truth. And with brilliance mixed with compassion for human life he says it all. This book is the bible of diary and everyone should read it if he or she has thoughts of consuming it or has loved ones to protect.

It took courage to write this book and give the true facts on such a commonly used product. We now know how much the public has been lied by those who are there to protect our health. We are all in the debt of Robert Cohen.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ, February 10, 2001
By
Kelley (Blue Springs, MO United States) - See all my reviews
This book is an eye-opener. Robert Cohen explains in "layman-ese" why humans have no real need for cow's milk. He also demonstrates that the people in power in our government are more interested in lining their pockets than they are in our health. The conflicts of interest and levels of corruption within the FDA and USDA are frightening. I already had some education in nutrition and had my doubts about dairy products, but this book has raised another concern....I now think twice about ANY label that I read or about any "claims" made by our government or the mainstream media. Even those who are sucked in by the dairy industry advertising and are skeptical of dairy "critics" will be convinced with the overwhelming evidence that Robert Cohen presents. He is very thorough and has the documents and references to back himself up. Anyone who has a real interest in being healthy should read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book may save your life, July 30, 2001

(REAL NAME)
Mr. Cohen is a true American Hero. As a concerned parent, he took it upon himself to look into the controversy surrounding the injection of bovine growth hormone into cows that was meant to increase their milk production. It seems that all he wanted was to be sure that his kids would continue to be safe drinking their milk. What he uncovered was a web of deceit and coverup of such a magnitude that it reads like a movie script; big money, political manipulation and payoff at the highest levels of government; total abuse and disregard for the American consumer and citizen in this and future generations. A giant biotech company, able to put it's own people into the power spots at the FDA and USDA, who then provide rubber stamp approval of their formers employers products, though they have not been properly tested according to FDA guidelines. This same company able to manipulate Congress and pass into law that food addtives proved carcinogenic under laboratory conditions, may now be added to our food supply. Collusion at all governmental levels to keep the vital test data that will expose the truth, hidden from public view for all time. What you read in this book is unbelievable, however, it is quite verifiable and true. If you care to know how milk affects your health and the health of your family and friends, or if you care to know just how insignificant we little people are when taking on big business, read this book. Minimially, it should get you thinking about what you are ingesting, and if you understand the message provided, it may just save your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars BUT YOU DO EAT DAIRY.....RIGHT.............?, December 18, 1999
This is the book to buy for a beginning vegetarian. Many people that embrace vegetarianism for the first time also unknowingly jump in to the dairy bandwagon. I know i did 20 years ago . Especially women who are so worried about calcium depletion. As a result, I developed many respiratory illnesses which also coincided with the highest dairy consumption of my life. Now i am dairy free & my allergies have greatly improved. This book is packed with information that new vegetarians can use not only to stand your ground, but educate others. Those milk adds everywhere are very slick, so arm yourself. The fight is still going to get BGH, labeled & out of the milk, get involved.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT INFORMATION, January 6, 2000
By A Customer
This book was great. The first 3 or 4 chapters take some time to get through if you're not used to scientific literature, but they are very good. The rest of the book is even better, especially one of the last chapters that talks about milk allergies at one point. I never knew that SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) was considered by some scientists to be a possible allergic reaction to milk. I don't have children yet, but you can believe after reading this book, they will never taste milk and will have an absolute minimum of other dairy products (if any at all). There are many wonderful (and healthier) alternatives to dairy and all the things it provides, so that's not a problem.

The only warning about the book is to vegetarians and those senstive to animals: he does mention animal experiments throughout the book. Not very much, but it's there. PLEASE DO NOT LET THIS KEEP YOU FROM GETTING THIS BOOK! IT IS WORTH IT TO GET THE INFORMATION IN THIS WONDERFUL BOOK !

3.0 out of 5 stars I really wish this book were better written, October 3, 2002

I have suspected for a long time that milk was an unhealthy toxin-- not just because I am lactose intolerant, not just because I have a nasal allergy to it, not just because from childhood I though it tasted awful. I have always wondered why it would be considered okay to drink the baby food of one other species, cows, but not, say, horses or bonobos. Finally, a book has come along to support this point of view.

Sadly, the book is poorly written and suffers from insufficient editing. Fully one half of the book details the author's battles with the Monsanto corporation and government agencies when it should spend more time documenting the known perils of cow pus. Another one quarter of the book deals with the form of various milk studies, rather than the content. Author Cohen, who is described as a research scientist, spends too much time showing that reports supporting the consumption of bovine venom are rife with mathematical errors, lacking footnotes, and close with subjective, predetermined conclusions... yet this book is little better. He makes assertions with little or no backup, and there should be many more footnotes than he includes.

Nonetheless, it is an important step that somebody has written a book to combat the fraud that is the milk industry. Milk contains cow blood, bacteria, and the pus from infections; recombinant bovine growth hormone is causing new health problems in America's population; fully 75% of people in the world are lactose intolerant. Mr. Cohen is right in asking, why drink this poison? What a shame he couldn't have asked it better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Milk. It Does the Body Good. Hahahahaha., September 12, 2000

I haven't read this book yet, but listened to Robert Cohen intervened by Mike Segal on the Coast to Coast radio program. You can listen to the entire interview on Robert's site at www.notmilk.com. It is well worth your listening. Robert is incredibly well researched and has been studying the effects of milk on the human body and the politics behind milk he says for 6 years now. I've stopped drinking milk a few years ago and since becoming more educated by Cohen I've completely removed just about all dairy products from my diet. This is VERY important information and well researched. You will want to get this info and educate your family and closest friends. Just give them the facts and you will be surpised how quickly they may come around. My brother stopped drinking milk totally after I related the facts about milk--and he was a big milk drinker. Please listen to the interview, visit Cohen's notmilk.com site and/or read this book.
