Book Description

* First published by Vicki Hinze writing as Victoria Cole in 1993. *

SHE KNOWS A CHILD’S LIFE IS IN DANGER BUT NO ONE BELIEVES HER.

HE KNOWS SHE’S A FRAUD AND IS OUT TO PROVE IT.

THEY SEEK THE TRUTH AND DISCOVER THE TRUTH CAN SET YOU FREE . . . OR KILL YOU

Caron Chalmers is an empath. A mind reader cursed with imaging only victims. She sees what they see, feels what they feel, endures what they endure and has since she was seven. But even with all the sensory perception and insights, sometimes she fails to save victims in time. Sometimes she interprets the signs wrong—and a year ago, she did exactly that. She messed up and a victim died. Caron nearly died with her. Her “gift” shut down.

Now it’s back. There’s another victim—this time a child—and because of the mistake made last year and the shut-down, her police contact, though aware of her many successes, isn’t willing to stake his career on her. Yet he can’t dismiss her and calls in help from a private investigator, Parker Simms: a man with a past as bleak as Caron’s and a specific agenda of his own: proving Caron Chalmers is the fraud he believes her to be.

In a hostile alliance, Caron and Parker seek the truth . . . and discover a labrynth of lies and deceptions that require skills and experience they have and trust they don’t but must somehow find before the child becomes another victim lost. Yet trust never comes without costs, and some are too steep to pay.
The situation grows desperate. Time for the child’s survival grows short . . . and for Caron and Parker, who must live with the consequences of missteps and wrong moves, the unthinkable happens: Stakes that couldn’t get any higher soar.

Caron Chalmers has visions; she sees and feels the situations of others. What powers this novel is that these situations always involve people that are in dire trouble. Caron is also burned out, burned out due to a vision which led to an action that turned out very, very badly for the (then) kidnapped.

Now suddenly, a year later, she is having visions again. This time she sees that a small girl has been abducted, and rushing to the police, she reports this vision to Hershel "Sandy" Sanders. Sanders is the detective that she has worked with in the past, but when she gets there, she finds that it is not just Sandy that is waiting for her. There is also gorgeous hunk and private detective Parker Simms, who is also the son of the well-known hero cop Charley Simms. Simms clearly has a grudge against Caron, because what Caron doesn't know is that Parker's partner Harlan had committed suicide when the case he and Caron were involved in went sideways. Parker holds Caron responsible, and considers her a fake, and is bent on destroying her.

The problem is that there doesn't seem to be a report of any girl fitting Caron's vision having disappeared, so Caron is having trouble having either Sandy or Parker taking her seriously.

Then the visions start coming faster and more intense, and she's having more flashbacks to her previous failure. As she is experiencing even more guilt over her failure, and as she is becoming even more driven to make up for it, she is getting physical threats that are escalating in intensity from somebody who mysteriously knows about her.

The problem is the sexual tension that is between Caron and Parker.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mind Reader April 8, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Was an ok read but there were times that I wanted to strangle the main character Caron. A huge portion of the book could have been cut if the characters had a conversation. Now, I'm all for a character getting mad and stomping off all while drawing the wrong conclusions (did he really sleep with her, did she really say that about me, etc) but when it becomes a total cliche just to fill word count - that's when I have a problem. Sure we all get huffy and want to storm off when someone pisses us off but like I said, a huge chunk of the book could be cut if not for the "misunderstandings" and lack of communication.

Overall though I liked the book. It had a good plot and kept me wondering what was going to happen to the main character. The ending drew everything total nice and neat.

5.0 out of 5 stars KEEPS YOU ON THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT! May 5, 2003
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Psychic, Caron Chalmers suddenly knows that a little girl has been abducted. Her psychic powers have been in abeyance for the past year. Ouch! suddenly they have been reactivated.
Sandy! She had to call Sandy. Detective Hershel Sanders with whom she has worked since she was a seven year old.
When she finally got to Sandy's little cubbyhole of an office she found that he was not alone.
The man with the black Porsche was sitting by Sandy's file cabinet in a black leather bomber jacket.
Big, Brawny, Beautiful -- were words that came to Caron's mind but suddenly she knew that he didn't like her.
He was a friend of Sandy's, a Private Investagator - Parker Simms. He did not believe in psychic powers nor in Caron's abilities.
Caron was still tormented by the Sarah James case she had helped Sandy solve last Christmas. Only the outcome had been horrendous.
Parker had been trailing Caron for the past year and had no evidence of her having any powers. He was going to prove that she was a fraud and take her down.
You really need to try this book - It keeps you on the edge of you seat - power packed and fast moving and DANGEROUS as Parker almost loses Caron. Such involvement and romance makes for an excellent book --- WOW!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - not bad for a 93 book and just as good a second time around.

3.0 out of 5 stars A love story more than a psychic book June 20, 2012

The Mind Reader started off a bit slow, with some repetition in setting a background for the reader. However, it became more interesting as it progressed. It is a mixture of a love story and a low- emphasis psychic involvement. I would recommend it for easy reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book yet! August 29, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book was an amazing read and I literally couldn't put it down, even on my 10 minute breaks at work! What I really liked about this book is that the author would put in the love interests thoughts as well. Some authors go back and forth every chapter but this one didn't. She would just have in linked within the chapters so you could tell what he was thinking through out the book as well. The main character and her love interest made this book that more exciting but in my opinion, the romance was a little rushed at the end. Other than that, A++! Loved it so much <3 I recommend this book 100%

5.0 out of 5 stars incredible story, incredible author! March 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As a professional pyschic, I have always been drawn to books that are stories about intuitives, or psychics. Many times I am disapointed because of the writer's inaccurate portrayal of their gifted characters. Vicki does NOT disapoint. As a psychic who has many times worked with law enforcement to locate missing people and help with murder investigations, I have been where Caron was and dealt with the doubt of law enforcement to the point of questioning my own sanity. I wonder, Vicki, surely you must be one of us? I was captured from the first page of Caron's story. Her emotional struggles with the visions she saw and what she felt as she searched for the missing child. I was right there with her feeling what she felt, seeing what she saw. Realistic in her scenes Vicki has done all of us true psychics proud with her talent. BRAVO!! Thank you Vicki for one of the best reads I have had in a very long time and for your honest portrayal of those of us who can't hide from our abilities and choose to do what we can with them.
