If you are wondering (as I was), this is the exact same roof rack sold at the Mini dealership. I called my dealer for a quote on how much it would cost to install and they quoted me almost double what the rack here costs and it took me less than twenty minutes to install. It installs to the rain guards at the edges of the roof and requires no bolts or tools other than those that come with it. Also, it can be taken off and put back on at anytime, if desired. It feels really solid on the car and looks great, too.

I'm subtracting one star only because it is evident that a lot of people have trouble installing the rack, and they should address this with better documentation and/or a video. The first problem is finding the perforated sections of the gutter lining - the perforations are not obvious and I think that any Mini owner could be forgiven for being nervous about pulling out bits of rubber from the gutter lining. The answer to that, aside from more help from Mini about how to find them (measurements, better markings on the gutter) is that you can safely pry back the rubber to find the slots (insert the card that they give you from the top down and slide it along where you think the slots are until you see them). Second, it isn't clear that the tabs that fit into the slots have to be fully inserted before using the special tool to compress the tab wings and engage the brass nut. This makes no sense whatsoever if you haven't tried it, but if you have then perhaps it will help to know that you should push on the outside of the tab wings in order to fully engage them before pushing against the center of the wings (with or without the little tool thing) in order to engage and tighten the brass nut. Basically you are hooking the tabs into the slot, much like moving a large couch through a door by angling the legs in first and then swinging the rest of the couch through.

I was worried about the install by all the reviews and youtube videos. I am apparently one of the few who found the install to be pretty painless. Don't get the wrong the videos and write-ups with photographs folks did were very helpful but I didn't seem to have the same amount of trouble as others. I used these references to get comfortable with the process prior to going through with it. I didn't need to pull up any additional information during install as a refresher as it's pretty straightforward.
I found the locations in the rain gutter for both the front & back bars. There were just little vertical indentations that were barely visible. I couldn't see the horizontal 'perforations' at all.
The kit came with a plastic credit card thing that you place behind the rain gutter. I then used the included tweezers and grabbed the rubber gutter between these vertical notches and pulled. When I pulled I then saw the horizontal perforations as they elongated and looked more like holes. I got the tweezers close, held them tight, and pulled. The entire section of rain gutter came off without any issue at all!
I loosened all the bolts in the base roof rack feet and began what was supposed to be an arduous process of aligned the 'wings' with the now open holes I just found. It wasn't terribly easy but it wasn't this huge deal either. I did find it counter-intuitive to keep the 'wings' apart when placing them inside the openings as I always found myself trying to pull them together to place inside. Once I got over that there wasn't much fiddling before getting a nice good fit.
Of the four feet only one gave me a little trouble getting lined up to be behind the nut. the inside portion of the wings are supposed to end up behind a nut which gets tightened.

Rack is well made and strong. I think it looks great on the car too, better than the Thule. I have had Thule ski racks in the past. I love the Thule brand but opted for this because it seemed a bit more solid and it looks better. You can hear a very slight whistle with no radio if you pay attention. Radio on, its not there. I could not hear it but my son pointed it out. It's amazing he can hear the rack and not me when I am sitting beside him but that's another story. I got this base rack with the mini ski rack. I like how easily and quickly you can add and remove the ski rack to the base. I got it for 2 pairs of ski's and poles. They all fit nicely with room for more. I think I am going to just leave the base on the this winter and remove the ski rack when I am not using it. I had a mechanic install mine just because I know I don't have mechanic super powers. I would have rated it a 5* but the ski rack did not improve my skiing one bit.

It can be done, but installation is difficult. Like everything BMW, it appears the instructions were written by an Google Language Tools. I highly recommend that you print out a review by "ZigAFug" entitled "Works great once you figure out how to install it". Read it several times and it will help you to install.

I'm posting the same review for this part, the roof rack base system, and the fork mounted bike racks ( I bought 2), both which were purchased separately. To carry bikes, you will probably need both kits, unless you have an older factory installed roof rack. In that case, you likely will not be researching this product. Some of the bike mount references I make will be relevant, even if you plan to use a ski or surfboard mount on your roof rack base system.

First thoughts: As I expected, this Mini Cooper Base System and Bike Rack was an exact fit for my 2011 Clubman. I am rather handy working on automobiles, however, I was a bit apprehensive at first in tackling this task. Probably since installation requires an irreversible alteration of the rooftop weather seal. But, relying on the assumption the Mini designers knew what they were doing, I dove in. But not without first researching online as there are a plethora of YouTube videos and text instructions available. Review some of those before starting or buying, and I'm sure you will come to the same conclusion: installation is a skill you CAN master. Probably a skill you MUST master. That is, unless you don't mind shelling out the rather high (read exorbitant) fee charged at the Mini Dealership every time you want to remove or install the base system and bike rack(s).

My experience: I was under pressure during installation since I waited too late to order and received the kits the day before we were planning to leave. I had done my homework though, and pre-assembled the parts that night. It helps to lay them out on the floor in the same orientation they will be installed on the vehicle. I started rooftop installation the next morning and completed in about 2 hours.
