The peppercorns are loaded into the smooth, gently curved body through a narrow opening at the top. You grasp the body in the middle with one hand and turn the top with the other. This is by far the best pepper mill that I have every purchased! It is large, so it holds an abundant supply of peppercorns, since I cook quite a lot, that is a big plus for me, not to mention that it is very easy to fill. And it dispenses loads of pepper with each turn. I wish this had been my first pepper mill purchase, I would never have had to purchase another!
