4.0 out of 5 stars Good product, well built.
Only one down-side I notice. The pour-spouts on the sides are not sufficiently pronounced to avoid spilling when pouring oil out. Otherwise the product is perfect for my purpose. P.S. I think an oil/candy thermometer would make a good companion for this item.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a well designed product
Why I do not like this product:

1) The way the basket sits inside the pot, you have much less usable space for food, while requiring LOTS of oil. It holds about 10-12 cups of oil, any more and it will overflow when the food is added. There is a fairly wide gap around the sides and on the bottom of the pot--that's just how the basket fits. The basket could...

The pot is solid and the handle is very sturdy, everything appear to be a good quality built. I don't use the wire basket so do not know if it performs ok or not.

The conical shape of the pot is excellent for maximum heat transfer and the material is good for heat retention. The inner side wall is high (deep?) enough to reduce oil splash--having the lid also further this cause. The vented lid is an excellent idea for minimizing condensation--it worked!

Finally, the handles are excellent for supporting the weight of the pot, especially when filled with oil.

Excellent unit. Heavy, well made, and does the job perfectly. I would recommend this fryer highly. Until a few weeks ago I had an electric deep fryer (Euro Pro) that didn't do the job very well and just decided to die while I was making a home fish fry. No more electrics for me. Don't forget to get a thermometer if you don't have one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I wanted, November 4, 2010

Having been a user of electric deep fryers and going through the frustration of heating elements that don't get the oil hot, I decided to get a stovetop model. I also despise the planned obsolescence that any electrical product is subjected to these days. You just know that we could easily make a product that would last twenty years.... but no, we have to make garbage that will break within a predefined amount of time and force the consumer to purchase another one... and toss the old one in a landfill. I've owned three of them in the past six years or so. It also looks cool. :)

This one is very nice. High quality parts. I only just tried it tonight to make some homemade potato chips. The oil took quite a while to get hot, but that's my gas stove that's the issue. I also found that I probably need to move the oil around to get an accurate reading on the thermometer that I bought along with this product. I clipped it to the side and watched. Once it reached 380+ degrees, I dropped in about 1 large potato's worth of very thinly sliced potatos that had been soaking in ice water. Boom, the temp dropped to 275 degrees (after stirring them around). I could also tell by the amount of sizzle that it was nowhere near 380 degrees. So, lesson learned, stir the oil around to determine actual temperature with a thermometer clipped to the side.

Other comments: The primary handle stayed quite cool to the touch and is quite sturdy. The other side's safety handle got pretty hot, so keep your potholders handy. The basket handle also stayed cool. I'm sure that after several uses, I'll get the hang of using this. Even with the temperature issue, the chips I made were very tasty.

A fryer like this requires at least a good thermometer. I also bought a funnel/strainer so that I can get a few uses out of the oil. I'm going to enjoy experimenting with this product. I would highly recommend to other people who like to deep fry occasionally and despise corporations that produce products that intentionally break within a year or two of regular use.

One last thing, shipping was super fast on this item and it arrive in perfect condition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Deep Fryer, July 15, 2010

I don't do a whole lot of deep frying but this one works great for chicken wings which is the main reason I bought it. I also use it to fry oysters which is nice since they can drain in the basket and it can hold a whole pint at once. Use it for frying catfish also. I'm sure it would also work great for anything you wanted to fry. It's large enough for most families (although I only cook for myself). The basket is a definite plus for draining cooked foods and is made from solid material, not flimsy or cheap feeling. The overall unit is solid. Also the lid works great as a splatter screen. Overall I'm glad I made this purchase.

This item replaced a very old electric deep fryer that finally died. I opted for a stove-top deep fryer so that I had better control over heat. This fryer is heavy and heats the oil evenly. It is great that the basket and lid can be placed in the dishwasher and the material it is made of cleans up easily. I would recommend this if you are looking for a deep fryer over the electrical ones that are a bearcat to dump the oil from.

Little to no splatter (of oil). Deep, large enough for multiple portions. Steel wire mesh on the lid allows the steam to escape, avoiding sogginess for the cooked product (i.e. fries come out crispy). A great cooking piece. Very stylish and appealing design.

P.S. Item's lid arrived with numerous slight dents (occurring during shipping?) due to poor packaging. No big whoop, but since it's a top piece it is noticeable and was somewhat annoying at first.

This is a quality product. Heavy duty kettle and fryer insert. The mesh lid is great for preventing too much splattering while letting the food crisp up. Easy to clean too. It all goes right into the dishwasher.

This is a SERIOUS fryer that I am sure will last for years. It's very heavy duty...thick aluminum pan with sturdy drain and cover. It'll easily fry half 6-8 medium potatoes at a time. For years, we got by with dropping potatoes into a pot of oil on the stove. Wish we hadn't struggled all that time with splattering and boil-overs. With this unit, you put remove the drain and place food into the drain (thereby removing more of the excess water that causes initial splattering) and lower it into the hot oil, pulling back out if it threatens to boil over, then put on the included lid with screen that nicely prevents splattering. The drain also clips onto the side for no-hands draining. The only one minor issue I have had is that the short grasping handle (opposite the long handle) does very very hot, so be careful (especially as a full unit is probably going to be too heavy to lift with one hand). Very much worth the price, which is comparable to the cr*ppy plug-in units that have all kinds of problems as you'll see in many of their reviews.
