Product Description

If silky smooth mashed potatoes are what you're after, consider this new kitchen helper, the potato masher that does double the duty with little effort on your part. This masher has two discs at the bottom - your boiled potatoes slide right in, then with a gentle plunge of the handle, they're mashed from both sides, creating creamy fluffs of potatoes with fewer lumps.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not so great, January 19, 2008

Mash, then mash again, all in one smooth motion. Sounds good, right? It doesn't really work out that way.

Unlike a ricer, in which the potato is well contained, there is very little to force the potato through the small holes in this masher, instead of outward and away from the mashing disc. The holes are fairly small and spaced too far apart, causing most of the potato to push sideways, instead of upward, and this leaves relatively little left for the top disc to perform its second mash upon (with even more sideways-instead-of-upward flow).

On the two that I purchased (one as a gift), the top, spring loaded disc tended to stick, then suddenly release after I had lifted the masher, flinging bits of potato about and making a small mess.

I also found it unreasonably difficult to clean, for such a simple tool. There are too many little corners for food to get trapped in. The mashing discs are not solid, flat pieces of metal, but rather stamped sheet metal with curled edges around the circumference that trap food particles. I'm sure it would clean up easier in a dishwasher than by hand, but then you have to worry about water getting trapped inside the handle where the spring is located, and possibly becoming corroded.

I recommend purchasing a ricer instead -- it will produce better results, with less mess, and will be easier to clean.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't Bother, September 29, 2008

Loved the concept, but did not work as expected. Too stiff to work well. I will stick with my electric mixer.

1.0 out of 5 stars Big disappointment, February 13, 2008

This potato masher looked so cool and the idea of double mashing had potential. Unfortunately this utensil is practically unusable. More potatoes are flicked out of the bowl than get mashed. I'm currently on Amazon looking for a replacement. Great concept but terrible functionality.
