I actually bought this product because of the conveniently attached egg piercer (I already owned a slicer--anybody need a slicer?). This was a terrific value you'll never beat @ $5.99 and free shipping! I used the piercer on eggs I bought and hard-boiled as soon as I got home (and then sliced for salad). The shells peeled off so easily. It was a dream come true if you've ever tried to make deviled eggs and ended up with those few that removing the shells took off chunks of the whites too; not something you want to take to a gathering. I am very happy with my Piercer and Egg Cutter.

Not Just for Eggs,

Let me start by saying our family does not usually eat hard boiled eggs. As a matter of fact the only time we make them is at Easter so needless to say we did not buy this product for its intended purpose. What we do eat a lot of is fruit salad. This egg slicer is great at slicing strawberries and kiwi. I have been using this everyday in this aspect and it is great. It also works great for slicing mushrooms at dinner time. The slicer is very big and sturdy. It seems to be very well constructed and durable. Once we get around to eggs I will be sure to update the review.

I recently bought this egg slicer, and it performs very well, although the design makes it a little bulkier than necessary. Definitely worth the price.

The egg slicer works great for eggs but isn't quite sharp enough to cut through mushrooms, which is the main reason I bought it. It mainly just tears the mushrooms up and does not make the perfect little slices I was hoping for, so its back to the knife for me. The piercer is a nifty add on though and eggs slice up well if that's what you're looking for.

Very happy with this slicer. I've only sliced eggs so far, but I'm sure it's great for kiwi and strawberries too. Not so sure about mushrooms, but it's pretty sturdy. I think it's as good as the Pampered Chef slicer, and you can't beat the price!

I returned this after one week. Broken. The slicing wire broke while I sliced strawberries. You have to slice quickly or else the wire crushes the strawberry, maybe I went too quickly. Either way, it does not slice the strawberries that I buy (usually Costco) well enough for MUI to state: "Can be used with eggs, strawberries, kiwis and mushrooms." When it was working, the slicing wire would still not slice all the way through and you'd have to pull the berry out by hand. Messy.
Works well for eggs though (thus the two stars).

This is not a high-end slicer, but it does the job. I use this mainly for presentation and soft fruit/veggie slicing. It's helpful for making egg salad, but why not just use a mini food processor? It's faster and easier. If you buy this slicer, be sure to wash AND DRY it thoroughly to avoid discoloration of the metal.

Total product failure, but did provide a good laugh!,

I was excited to try this out, since we often slice not only eggs, but strawberries too. When I opened it up, I was discouraged by the flimsy look of it, but had hope that it would still be a great addition to our kitchen since it had more positive reviews here than negative. This was my first experience with the egg piecer (and is the reason I almost gave it two stars instead of one). Does that mean the egg piercer did what it was supposed to do? No! I achieved the same results using the piercer as I did without, but it did give me a good laugh that still makes me chuckle now just thinking about it. Here's what happened: While I was sitting in the living room going through my email I heard my husband shout out, "Ouch! What the He** was that! What the He** is this thing for? Torcher?" I rushed to the kitchen to see what he was going on about and found him holding the egg cutter with a look of trepidation. "What happened?" I asked, already guessing and trying not to laugh, so I could hear the story from him. He then went on to tell me that he'd read the inscription on the yellow piercer part of the slicer that said "lock" on one side and "punch" on the other. Not knowing what this meant, he of course turned it to "punch" with his finger smack dab in the middle of the circle. His finger went down as soon as the dial was turned to the "punch" position--at which point the needle that does the piercing stabbed into the delicate flesh of his finger. Of course I was so sympathetic to his plight that I had to squeeze my legs together to prevent myself from peeing my pants as I roared with laughter. Now, on to the reason for the one star rating. I used this a total of 3 times. The first time some of the eggs came out smoothly sliced, while some looked more torn than sliced (perhaps because this uses wire instead of blades and some eggs have a different texture than others, making them not slice as easily). The second time I used it I got the same results on the eggs, but I figured it was still worth me not having to do it by hand. The third time I used it was for strawberries. It broke. So, that was the end of it and now I need to find another slicer. I think I'll avoid the wire cutters from now on. The lesson here? Well I'm sure my hubby learned to think before acting on the impulse to push or turn buttons (we'll see). And I learned, once again, that you get what you pay for. I wouldn't recommend buying this unless you want to use it as a practical joke for the unsuspecting, curious and impulsive person in your life. |
