MIU France Stainless Steel Battery Operated Electric Salt Mill with Light

As other users indicated, I, too, was very confused upon opening my new salt mill. The exterior of the box was stamped for a salt mill, but the interior booklet was for their (MIU France's) pepper mill, and at first glance it seemed identical to the pepper mill, which I also have and love. Additionally, it did not come with the "6 included batteries" as the booklet stated, nor the bottom fitted cover that my pepper mill has (to keep stray pepper from falling out).

Curious and a little frustrated, I sat down and compared the two. I saw no "S" anywhere on it as another user stated. The only difference I found was that the bottom interior (but visible) grinding mechanism was white as opposed to grey metal that the pepper mill was. I had done some research before I purchased it (or any salt mill) and since my understanding was that metal mechanisms corrode with salt, this must be a different material and that was made it a salt mill, not a pepper mill. But erring on the side of caution, I found the MIU France website and contacted them by email. I received a reply immediately (positive experience) and here was their response:

"First, thanks for purchasing a MIU France product.

For the peppermill, the grinding mechanism should be "grey/metal" in color. That would be the carbon steel for grinding pepper. (using salt with the carbon steel would eventually corrode the metal, though it would work)

For the saltmill, the mechanism should be white in color. That would be the ceramic meant for salt (though pepper would work as well). Dry sea salt or any crystalline salt without alot of moisture as that would cause the mill to build up as it clumps together after the grind.

The new production mills do not include the bottom "cover plate". Reason for that is, many users just cannot understand how to remove that cap, thereby grinding away and building up the grind under the cap or just plain returning it because of that. Also, with the production cost rising due to material cost, we wanted to keep the pricing exactly the same, so we had to eliminate the inclusion of the batteries.

To lessen the confusion, we offer to Amazon our combo pack (salt and pepper mill set) to ensure you are getting one of each.

I'm very sorry for all your troubles, I would certainly love to send you 6 AAA batteries for mill, and extra bulb (just in case) and I'll look around to find you the cover for the bottom too."

So there it is folks. I suggested that they at least update this Amazon product page to indicate these changes and to lessen the confusion that is caused. Hopefully, this post will do that if they do not.

Let me finally say that I love the product. I, too, am a serious foodie; I've used their pepper mill for over a year with no problems and for the few days I've had the salt mill, I have had great luck with it. And let me add that everyone who has used the pepper mill (I travel with it sometimes!) loves it and inquires about it.

P.S. The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars was because of the confusion around the product.

It is beautifully made but when I got it my salt mill according to thr literature is supposed to be a pepper mill and it says not to be used for salt at all - very confusing. Also the light does not work anymore because SALT corroded the contacts. Crappy design.

This unit arrived and, as the previous reviewer indicated, the manual indicates it is a pepper mill. However, the housing has an S monogram for salt.

This has a lifetime guarantee but there is no phone or address for the company at all.

It turns out that this is a company in China with no connection or origin at all to France!

I finally broke down to purchase this matching salt mill to my peppermill that I had purchase last year. The pair sitting side by side looks fantasic. The salt unit uses a ceramic grinder while the pepper uses the carbon steel. Other than that, they are indistinguishable. Beautifully made and just the right amount of heft in weight. Visitors always make a positive comment on how great it works and easy to use.

I HAVE TRIED MANY PEPPERMILLS AND THIS ONE BY FAR IS THE BEST!!! AND GREAT PRICE TOO I HAD TO BUY TWO ONE FOR PEPPER AND ONE FOR SALT!

These salt & pepper grinders are amazing! I originally bought the pepper mill, and have been very happy with that and thus bought the salt mill as well!

Here is why I like them:
1. Can be operated with only one hand (real reason why I bought them)
2. Look nice
3. As it grinds, the mill will shine a light onto the dish that you're grinding pepper/salt into
4. Stores a lot, so you don't have to refill frequently.

Downsides:
the only downside that I can think of is that the refilling & battery replacement is a 2-handed operation. Other than that, it's awesome.

Works great and is a great conversation piece over dinner. I have comments from all ages kids to seniors.

Received this as a gift. I previously had received an electric peppermill from another company but must say that I would rather have one from the same company as the salt grinder. Salt grinder is easy to use and grinds the salt just exactly how I need it. Only drawback is that it requires 6 AAA batteries that did not come with it.

A serious foodie that has been perfecting her cooking skills for the last 25 years in her home kitchen writes this review. My favorite cookbooks are "The Professional Chef" by the Culinary Institute of America and "Culinary Artistry".

I received this product for Christmas and I love it. My husband purchased this in a set of both salt and pepper grinders for me. One has a ceramic grinding mechanism and the one has a stainless grinding mechanism. We liked the first set so much that we purchased a second set within a week. Now we have one with black peppercorn, another with white peppercorns. The salt grinders are filled with Trapani (Sicilian) Sea Salt, and Grey Salt.

I love that these can be used with one hand. I also love that they are so easy to clean with a damp cloth. If you will be handling meat you can cover the button mechanism with a piece of plastic wrap prior to handling the meat and then just remove the plastic film when you are finished.

I find the adjustment mechanism to be more than adequate. We had to fiddle with it a little to get a coarse enough grind, but it took less than 5 minutes. We prefer to see the salt and pepper on the top of our food.

If you use these are often as we do, you might want to consider purchasing rechargeable batteries for this product. These grinders get enough of a workout in our home that each of the four grinders has already been through 2 sets of batteries since this past Christmas.

This is one of those products that I would give to any of my foodie friends. It is just so much nicer to be able to grind spices with one hand. This product is well weighted and feels nice in the hand. I highly recommend this product; you will not be disappointed with this purchase.

Love this product. I have had a matching pepper mill for quite a while and wanted a matching pair!
Just love the convenience and the light is a super feature!
