Yes, the wireless ML-L3 remote does in fact work with the Nikon D5100. You have to hit the 'Information button' and select 'Release mode' and change to 'Quick-response remote'.

Nikon ML-L3 Remote Controller

I just purchased a D5100 with the ML-L3 among other accessories; I am sitting here putting it/them through tests to see if they all work.

Everything is great so far.

What I found on the ML L3 to make it work...

Make sure the battery is in it (the remote) (camera too).....the tab on the unit has a double pinch release, one goes sideways, while the other pulls out....need fingernails.

On the D5100 turn it on
Press the rear info button twice, (once if the display is showing) to get to the right side tool bar.

Use the scroll to get down or up too the Release Mode....Press OK
Scroll down to either Delayed Remote....or Quick Response Remote.....OK

By Default the D5100 will give you one (1) minute to take a picture. Make sure....you're not behind the camera (won't work there) off to the side or in front.

It works in all the Auto, Effects, Scenes, and Pro Modes for me. Make sure a card in in.

And about that one minute to use it (if you wait too long the camera goes back to S single shot) that can be remedied. To do so.....

Press Menu

See the Pencil.....scroll down to that....Custom Setting Menu....OK

In the Custom Settings Scroll down to c Timers/AE Lock...OK

from there Scroll down to c4 Remote on Duration.....OK

You will see options to set the time from 1-5-10-15 min. I chose 5min... OK

There this thing works great now......I would recomend it to my Mother in Law...sic....it is nice.

Does the ML-L3 wireless remote work in bulb mode, so I can keep the shutter open for as long as I press the release? Or do I need a wired remote to do that?

YES! If you download the D5100 "Reference Manual" from the Nikon site and refer to pages 37 and 206 you will see that this is the correct remote for your camera. I have the same and am now looking to buy the remote as well.
