This game is so much better than MLB 2K7 for PSP, it has so much better graphics, Road To The Show is awesome. They still have great gameplay, this game couldn't be much better (other than the fact that David Wright is on the cover), so if your looking to get a good game for PSP GET THIS!!!

I was a big fan of MLB '06: The Show and so I bought this one thinking they could only improve on the last one. I was wrong. The area I have a problem with is the career mode. I always love that part of the game and so I dove right into it when I received this game. After each game, you get a certain amount of points depending on how well you did and how many 'goals' you completed (if you're doing the 'new' version and not the 'classic' career version). In the beginning of your career, this means you don't get that many. If you're playing as a pitcher, you can expect to get few in the early stages since everyone and their mother will hit a homerun against you. You take those points and use them for 'training' to help you get better in any number of areas like fielding, velocity, control, etc. If you don't train in each area after a couple of weeks, you start to lose points. Meaning, if you're not pouring points into your 'control' area every time you get them, then you'll lose control after a week. How unrealistic is that? I mean, real baseball players don't lose velocity if they don't sit there and train every single day. I liked it much better in the last version where you'd work toward building up points in a certain area and then after a certain age, you'd start to decline faster.
This game also seems to have more silly glitches than the last. With runners on base, the game tends to get a little choppy and runs a little slower. Balls that are CLEARLY hit foul are called homeruns, ground balls that your players should throw to get the out at first (if you have the fielding on auto) are thrown to third to try and get the runner from second even though it's not a force and the third baseman doesn't tag him but rather catches it and then throws to first and everyone is safe. Also with auto fielding (which I had on because I was the pitcher and not concerned with the other players), shallow popups aren't caught even though the outfielder could clearly get there in time. He choses to let the ball drop and he catches it on a bounce while everyone scores. Another thing is the catcher calling the pitches that he thinks are your best ones as a pitcher. He even suggests a location. I honestly had my catcher suggest I throw a fastball down the middle to Ryan Howard. And, out of interest, I decided to go along with my catcher for one inning and do everything he suggested. I gave up 7 runs. A lot of the things that they've tried to implement in this game are good in theory but were not well executed. '06 was much better in my opinion. The other modes aren't bad, but they could use some work too. All in all, let's just say this: after a week of having the game, I took it out of my PSP and put in the '06 version.

This is one of the best baseball games out. Here are my reviews.
The Good: The graphics are amazing. Batting is a blast. Tons of options when creating players. Replay is awesome. Plenty of pitch choices when creating pitchers. The Bad: Pitches aren't right on the spot when thrown. Speed of pitches can be a hassel. Ratings out of 10: Graphics-9.0 Gameplay-8.8 Sound/Music-9.5 Value-9.0 Overall-9.0 If your a baseball fan, GET THIS GAME!!!

I enjoyed the game with exception to a few glitches. The only time on career mode that the manager let me throw a complete game was when I was close to throwing a perfect game. There were times when the manager pulled me with 1 out left in the game and a shutout was still intact. You can question the decision but the common response was that he saw that I was tiring or that sometimes he says that he should have left me in longer, but the bottom line is your player/pitcher gets pulled, having it impossible to complete some goals such as getting complete games, etc... Then there are times when the fielders double clutch, resulting in what should be errors but the computer always gives them hits, which goes against your player/pitcher's avg. against.
With exception to those glitches, I enjoy the hitting, pitching and fielding aspects of the game.

MLB 07 offers the same features as MLB 06, which was my favorite game to ever come out on psp before 07. The catcher/pitcher AI is remarkable, you have the ability to pitch YOUR own games teaming with the catcher to get those outs. Pitch movements are remarkable, its not always thrown to the spot you want it thrown to, it depends on your pitchers stamina and overall, how good your pitcher actually is. For example, it is fairly difficult to throw a shutout with an average pitcher like Tim Wakefield but not as hard to throw with an elite pitcher like Roy Oswalt. Your career player (if they are a pitcher) does get knocked around a bit while your training to build up your ability but with a little effort and some smart decision making skills with how you spread those valuable training points (like building up one main pitch before developing others), you will be great in no time. Don't listen to the other reviews which speak of losing points if you dont train everyday. you will lose points if a particular area (such as velocity, accuracy, weight room, batting coach, etc...) is abandoned for about a months time. That is you have 4 weeks before your abilities start to decrease. A smart move would be to just let the abilities you dont need decrease while you develop the areas you do need. For example, if you are a center fielder, you do not need a high blocking rating.
The "road to the show" feature is phenomenal. you have the abillity to now play the field, run the bases, and bat. You are in total control of your player. Only downside is that the games are longer now especially if you like to simulate to your "next at bat" like me. An upgraded feature is the interaction menu, as you get to talk to your manager about chemistry, why'd you pull me last game, playing time, starts, and still the favs from last year like "retire into the sunset", and talking to the media. The King of the Diamond feature is relatively the same and still very fun. Overall, MLB 07 offers the same excitement and joy as MLB 06 with a few new upgrades and features. If you love 06 then get this one, no questions asked.

My favorite baseball game ever was MLB 2k5 for PS2. The controls were spot on, it was hardly ever glitchy, and the graphics were pretty good for that day and age. However, after buying a PSP, I realized I wanted a quick baseball game as it is that time of year. Not wanting to shell out the extra bucks for MLB 08 or 2k8 (since graphics aside, there isn't that much year-to-year difference anyway), I picked this up. First, let me say the graphics are high-PS2 caliber, and that is saying A LOT for a PSP game. For a very small screen, they cram a lot of stuff in, the only downside being the total lack of detail on players' faces. Another thing this game does very well is totally immerse you in a highly realistic baseball experience. Some games (most, really) still leave you feeling less like a manager and more like a 20-year old who's sitting on his parents couch playing his PSP. However, this does a very nice job of all the small things, whether you're in season, career, or quick play mode.
Now for the controls. I really love the batting and the "guess the pitch" controls, and pitching is wondeful as well. Fielding is decent, but the fielders seem really stupid, a routine ground ball will sometimes not be thrown to first in time just because the fielder didn't throw it hard enough (and I turned the throwing strength slider all the way up and nothing changed). But now we come to the part of the game I hate most: the baserunning. First, it's extremely hard to control, and second, the baserunners only obey you about half the time, which makes for an unholy mess. The AI is suspicious as well, it is very easy to cheat. (For example, if a runner is on third and there is only one out, simply bunt along the first base line and the fielders throw to first every time, giving you an easy run). Online play and gamesharing are completely underwhelming. I have done both at least three or four times and every single time, the pitching was off for both players. I could not control where I was going to pitch, and my opponent could not control what he was going to pitch. It was also really really laggy and glitchy. It's a decent game, and most likely the best baseball game on PSP, but very disappointing in the MLB franchise.

I just recently bought a PSP and got this game so I could play some baseball. The graphics are amazing. I have only played the season so far and havn't tried anything else. Some of the aspects of playing the game are garbage. I had a guy hit an in-the-park homerun by running from second across the pithcers mound and home. I have had runners go from first to thrid by crossing the diamond and have had runners run past second and all the way to the centerfield wall. I did want that guy to go home but not literally. I watched David Ortiz take a pitch that should have hit him in the chin and hit it 400 feet over the Green Monster. Right. Throwing the ball from the outfield is always fun. I tried to throw a guy out at second and hit the button to throw the ball to second and for some reason the ball went to home plate. When the ball is first hit who you are going to control is always a fun guess. On a ball hit that one would think the second baseman is going to get for some reason I have control of the shortstop. It wouldn't bother me to much if the second basement would get off his lazy butt and go after the ball. That is some of the problems I am having with this game. I keep playing it cause I'm stuck in Iraq and don't have much else to do to pass the time away. I'm thinking about buying a new baseball game, but I guess this will have to do for the time being. If it's all you got, it's all you got.

Nice Game, Terrible Manual,

So this game is an OK upgrade from MLB 06. It's probably the slowest game I own for my PSP but once you're on deck things move pretty quickly...unless there are two runners on base then the screen can get choppy when the action starts.
Warning to newbies: the game manual is flippin terrible! If you don't believe me go to Sony's web site and download the PDF. The only direction it gives is basic overview of the controls. You will be lost if you don't know what the different onscreen indicators mean. There is a lot to learn before this game can get really fun so if this is your first foray into a sports game then be prepared to spend a few hours getting spanked by the AI. |
