Realistic Mechanics and Up-to-Date Player Data
on May 20, 2013
Even though almost anyone who both owns a PS3 and likes baseball/baseball games plays The Show series, I still find that the 2K series has the most realistic mechanics. The graphics aren't great, the players glitch a lot, but the mechanics are still there. I've been a strong supporter of the series ever since I played the MLB2K7 Demo 6 years ago; I still have that Demo on my PS3, and I still play it from time to time, because, I think, having played baseball for many years, it still shines through with the most realistic player movement system. Over the years, however, I have noticed what appears to be a simple case declination in effort by the 2K team. In the 2K8 installment, the series showed that it was pushing forward, with the addition of something that may seem trivial, but, to me, it was a huge step: jersey movement. They attempted to make almost every part of a player's jersey move, depending on wind, player movement, limb movement, environment interaction, etc. Not to mention, they seemed to have found a fix for players magically going through each other, which has tainted a players' experiences in all types of games for years. They did so by creating a collision system. This means that, if you run into another player, they will collide, and fall/drop the ball, depending on who ran into who. After this huge accomplishment, 2K seemed to taper off, almost as if they had given up trying to compete with The Show series, and just continued to produce SOMETHING that allowed Xbox360 players to still experience a baseball game.
The other area in which the game/game series thrives is player data. The game updates player data EVERY DAY. Player data is not just statistics and rosters, it includes things like player tendencies, hot streaks/cold streaks, etc. MLB13TheShow only updates statistics and rosters, and, it only updates once a week. If I want to play my own version of a day's game, I play MLB2K13, because it will have the exact roster that the team's have (including injuries, lineup changes, etc.), and the players in the game will perform similarly to how they did/do that day in actuality.
In conclusion, MLB13TheShow LOOKS amazing, but MLB2K213 FEELS amazing.
