Amazon.com Review

Who needs realism? While all the other guys slave away every year to make their sports games as realistic as possible, Midway has gleefully chosen to make the wildest, most violent, and arguably most fun sports games you can buy. Topselling games like NFL Blitz, NHL Hitz, and NBA Jam are annual tweaks on the nose of sports gaming, yet Midway has kept the games close enough to the real sports they model to justify the expense of real player and team licenses. MLB SlugFest is no exception. It’s a Three Stooges-style romp into Major League Baseball, and it's crazy fun.

Imagine our National Pastime with Bugs Bunny-style pitching, runners who think nothing about clocking the First Basemen to extend their hit into a double, and hot players who burst into flame when they're on a roll. If a pitch hits the batter he either charges the mound like the Hulk on speed, or he cries and crawls to take his base. Everything is outrageous and exaggerated, yet beyond the cartoon antics is a real game where skill with pitching and batting can carry you to victory.

All of the major league's players, stadiums, teams, and logos are in the game, letting you really put the smack down on your least favorite team or force a perennial loser to play like brutes. A home run derby mode lets you practice hitting the long ball. One highlight is the commentary, which is hilarious. It consists of one smart guy calling the plays, setting up a gravel voiced idiot for some off the wall comment. Whether it’s speculating how many candles you’d have to melt to make a wax Babe Ruth, or complaining about the taste of his third Styrofoam cup, the commentary is fresh, funny, and it takes quite a while before it gets old.

Solid baseball gameplay and strategy--amped up and turned all the way to "11"--is what MLB SlugFest offers players. It's a great way to spend a nice spring day; mix in a little violence and flaming baseballs with your peanuts and Crackerjack.--Andrew S. Bub

Pros:

  • Great graphics and hilarious audio
  • Solid baseball gameplay beneath the silly gimmicks
  • Especially fun when played with a buddy
Cons:
  • Computer player uses too many crazy pitches and abilities.

Product Description

The game of summer just got smokin'. MLB SlugFest 20-03 and Alex Rodriguez ignite America's national pastime with a torrid blend of aggressive, adrenaline-style action and authentic Major League Baseball credentials. Like a fastball high and tight, this game will stir things up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining Game, October 11, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: MLB Slugfest 20-03 (Video Game)
I rented this game and I have to say it was pretty entertaining, especially when playing against a friend. You can bean people, and then initiate fights at any base you like to try to get the player to drop the ball or get the player to step off the base. The graphics are unbelievable for the stadiums and the players are good except for the fact that some heads do not really resemble the players in real life, but this is not a problem at all. Batting is very easy and so is pitching, but the only minor downfall of this game is the fielding. It took a long time to learn how to field the right way and I still make errors all the time. Balls go to the outfield and infield way too fast and it is hard to judge where they are going to land or go until it is almost too late. Once you get the touch with diving and jumping it is a lot easier, but at first it is going to be real frustrating with fielding so be prepared to work on it. I also found the CPU to be extremely hard, even at the very easiest level, when I first started off. The best part of the game, besides the fighting, is that players can catch on fire if they start the game well batting and this improves their batting, power, and fielding skills. My advice to you is to buy the game because it will take a while to get used to the game and there is so much you can do with the game that renting it would not do justice. Plus, make sure you have friends at your disposal to be able to duke it out with, bcuz especially for this game it is way more entertaining and fun than simply playing against the CPU.

5.0 out of 5 stars Already can't wait for SLUGFEST 2004, September 15, 2002

This game is the best game I've played for baseball yet... The Fantastic Acrobatic plays and long supercharged home runs are the best. In the park home runs are as easy as doubles as you can run down the catcher and anyone trying to tag you. If you like baseball and have a gamecube this is the game to get!

4.0 out of 5 stars Home Run!!!, September 19, 2005
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: MLB Slugfest 20-03 (Video Game)
To really be honest with you, I really enjoy a whole lot of sports classics that have came out for the Nintendo Gamecube. Arguably, there just could've been a little more when it comes to baseball. I see so much more with football classics like EA's Madden, and basketball classics like NBA Street. However, I really haven't seen all that much for baseball. Midway has really changed all that for the better. Since their days creating such wild and wacky games like NBA Jam, and NFL Blitz, they bring more outragousness with out of the ordinary acrade sports games. Now, they have really outdone themselves.

MLB Slugfest 2003 for the Nintendo Gamecube, is a wild and extreme baseball classic. You have all of the great classic teams of baseball like Texas Rangers, New York Yankees, and the Florida Marlins, compete in baseball gone haywire. In this game, the baseball game goes beyond traditional, with wild pitches, and moves where you can have the pitcher actually hit the batter as a option. The graphics are outstanding, as well as all the great stadiums like Fenway Park, The Kingdome, and Shea Stadium, being graphically showcased well. The control is a bit shaky at first with trying to get the right camera angles especially, but it is very easy to actually pick up with a little practice. The game goes beyond ordinary with bonuses like hidden stadiums to unlock, and other attributes. The game also delivers in traditional exhibition, season, and tournament modes.

Even though Midway has really hit it off, it is just a shame they haven't put out a great sports game like this, considering more of them are placed for the Playstation 2, and Xbox. Still, MLB Slugfest 2003, is a true delight for anybody who really loves the world of baseball on the Nintendo Gamecube.
