Arcade, not simulation,
By
This review is from: MLB Slugfest 20-04 (Video Game)
First things first: this is not a baseball simulation game. It is an arcade-style baseball game and, therefore, is perfect for people who are not hardcore baseball fans (like me). You don't have to worry about pitch location and bat location on your swing, you simply play arcade-style baseball, which, IMO, is why this game is so fun.The game is not meant to be taken seriously. If you get two hits in a row, you are on fire, literally, and all of your stats increase. If you are the pitcher and you strike out three batters, you get on fire and have unlimited turbo (although it is not impossible to hit an on fire pitcher, it is all about timing). You can bean batters, either knocking them down and reducing their stats or infuriating them and having them charge the mound, making them "on fire," and increasing their stats. You can slide cleats first into a base, punch the 1st/2nd/3rd baseman or shortstop & knock the ball out of his hands, punch people to tag them out, etc. This is not meant to be a serious baseball game. It is an arcade game and, as such, is done very well. If you are looking for a serious game, I have heard that MVP Baseball 2004 if great (I have not played it b/c, as I stated before, I am into arcade-style baseball). The bottom line: If you want a fun game that is not a baseball simulation, pick this one up. It is the type of game that you merely put into the machine and play . . . no instruction really needed. However, if sim baseball games are your thing, then get something else. Overall, I think it is a great, fun game to play, and do not hesitate in recommending MLB Slugfest 20-04 as the next addition to your PS2 collection.

This is the greatest baseball video game EVER!!! The commentary is awesome, the graphics are awesome, EVERYTHING is awesome. I like how simple it is to control your players, I've played other baseball video games and it is difficult to swing the bat! Also, besides being the best baseball video game ever, it just might be the best overall video game ever! This game rocks!

This game is amazing. A baseball videogame that's actually fun to play. The developers have managed to make a baseball videogame exciting, which is quite an achievement. The gaming and the graphics are really neat, and all the extra mini-games add to the replay value.

Very fun -- violence is cartoonish...,

This was our son's 2nd foray into sports games (had Madden 2003 Football, but never got the hang of the controls, etc.). He has loved it since the 1st play, and Dad (even Mom!) have fun playing. There are a variety of pitches available, as well as hitting and fielding options. Hitting a batter with a pitch causes them to get consumed by fire and run after the pitcher. I believe the violence complaints are unwarranted -- no worse than the kind found in Sly Cooper or Ratchet & Clank, and most of the "fights" are done off-screen, showing reactions from the other players. We allow NO violent games, and I have allowed this one, without reservations.
With its great commentary (funny and sharp), realistic rendering of stadiums and wide variety of options, I'd say it's a great game for the younger or amateur player. Serious baseball players would probably rather have the realism of MVP or the like.

Its not about franchise its about clearing the bench,

This is not, I repeat not, supposed to be a sim. If you are looking for an extensive franchise mode, or a indepth manager mode this is not the game for you. BUT it is the only baseball game with a punch button. This is the NFL Blitz of Baseball. It is fun it is fast. it is not meant to be a sim. The graphics are great the play is great. But it is not a sim. Its fun and fast. You know what real baseball isnt.

this game is of the hook,

This game is of the hook. You can punch and kick people to get on base, you can catch on fire and get your speed on your fastball back, you can get a guy out from the outfield and rob him of a single, even when you hit a batter they can lose strength or they can run after the pitcher. if you have the money then you should buy this game.

A Five Star Pleasure If You Ask Me,

This review is from: MLB Slugfest 20-04 (Video Game)
Slugfest is hilarious. It conferms humor more than any other baseball game i've seen before. It's Uniqe by letting you be animals or ningas. You get to have cool new bats and punch people to make them drop the ball. Turbo is pretty cool to. It makes you run super fast and throw faster than the pitcher pitches the ball

If you could buy one game this summer this is the game to buy. You can get on fire, hit people on base, punch people, throw sweet pitches, and hit homeruns most of the time. I give this 5 thumbs up.

GREAT simulation, HORRIBLE eveything else,

OK, this game is overall pretty good. The commentary is clever and smart, the replay is very good, the faces are very accurate, EVERYTHING about playing the game is great. But then you get to different modes. The options are VERY limited. For hard-core baseball fans who want a real season, with managering and trading and free agents and contracts, you're OUT-OF-LUCK. The season can only be 52 games, you can't trade players AT ALL! In fact, the only manergering related thing you can do is set the line up. You can't even pick the pitcher! In home run derby, you can have up to 8 players, but only one round. If you can have more than one round, I can't figure it out because also it's hard to figure out controls. All in all, this is a so-so game. If you want to have your friends over for a party, and you don't care about setting lineups or teams or anything like that, this is the game for you. If you (like me) love keeping track of players and stats and trades and stuff and record all this down, I would recommend All Star Baseball 2004, or as they say, "The best is yet to come" |
