Amazon.com Review

Who needs realism? While all the other guys slave away every year to make their sports games as realistic as possible, Midway has gleefully chosen to make the wildest, most violent, and arguably most fun sports games you can buy. Topselling games like NFL Blitz, NHL Hitz, and NBA Jam are annual tweaks on the nose of sports gaming, yet Midway has kept the games close enough to the real sports they model to justify the expense of real player and team licenses. MLB SlugFest is no exception. It’s a Three Stooges-style romp into Major League Baseball, and it's crazy fun.

Imagine our National Pastime with Bugs Bunny-style pitching, runners who think nothing about clocking the First Basemen to extend their hit into a double, and hot players who burst into flame when they're on a roll. If a pitch hits the batter he either charges the mound like the Hulk on speed, or he cries and crawls to take his base. Everything is outrageous and exaggerated, yet beyond the cartoon antics is a real game where skill with pitching and batting can carry you to victory.

All of the major league's players, stadiums, teams, and logos are in the game, letting you really put the smack down on your least favorite team or force a perennial loser to play like brutes. A home run derby mode lets you practice hitting the long ball. One highlight is the commentary, which is hilarious. It consists of one smart guy calling the plays, setting up a gravel voiced idiot for some off the wall comment. Whether it’s speculating how many candles you’d have to melt to make a wax Babe Ruth, or complaining about the taste of his third Styrofoam cup, the commentary is fresh, funny, and it takes quite a while before it gets old.

Solid baseball gameplay and strategy--amped up and turned all the way to "11"--is what MLB SlugFest offers players. It's a great way to spend a nice spring day; mix in a little violence and flaming baseballs with your peanuts and Crackerjack.--Andrew S. Bub

Pros:

  • Great graphics and hilarious audio
  • Solid baseball gameplay beneath the silly gimmicks
  • Especially fun when played with a buddy
Cons:
  • Computer player uses too many crazy pitches and abilities.

Product Description

MLB SlugFest 2003 uses advanced motion capture technology to clearly detail each player's facial expressions and reactions. The animations are so precise, gamers can view players on the field chewing gum, talking to one another and cheering for their teammates. While at the plate, gamers can dig in and unleash a mammoth blast clear out of the park. To add to the authentic baseball delivered in MLB SlugFest 2003, five-time MLB All-Star Alex Rodriguez will appear on the package cover and other advertising materials for the game. Entering his seventh full Major League Baseball season, the Texas Rangers shortstop also consulted with the development team on the game. Also stepping up to the plate is Roadrunner Records' recording act Dry Kill Logic, which recorded a hard-rockin', new millenium version of 'Take Me Out to the Ball Game' to accompany the game's aggressive attitude and extreme-style play.

5.0 out of 5 stars Its Awesome!, June 29, 2002
By
This review is from: MLB Slugfest 2003 (Video Game)
If your one of those people like i am and get kinda bored with the regular basbeball sims you will really love this game. With its arcade action, high adreneline plays, and mamouth shots from home plate it is also very funny to listen to what the anouncers have to say. So, if you want a high-paced, incredibly fun and long time enjoyable video game this is something that you need to pick up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great game...(not realistic), July 15, 2002
A Kid's Review
This review is from: MLB Slugfest 2003 (Video Game)
First of all. I would recommend MLB Slugfest 2003 to anyone...it is a very solid game with great graphics. At times this game can be a little violent...(like all other Midway games) but is still rated E for everyone. The code sysem at the beginning of the game is just like Blitz....u press all the buttons u can possibly press and see if any codes pop up. I gave this game 4 stars because of its lack of realism...i would have givin it 4 and 1/2 because the graphics abnd funness make up for all the problems...but still had to give it 4..so basically heres how I put it:

Graphics 9/10
Gameplay 7/10
Realism 1/10
Funness 10/10

so basically this is a good game...and i hoped u learned stuff from my review...any way... I love this game...and if u buy it...i hope u love it to!

5.0 out of 5 stars BASEBALL WITH AN ATTITUDE, July 10, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: MLB Slugfest 2003 (Video Game)
I normally like to rent games before buying them, but this game just looked to good to pass up.With the reviews I read here and the screen shots I saw,I just had to have it so I went a got myself one today. If you are looking for a realistic simulation type game, keep looking. This game is along the lines of NBA Jam.Fast paced game play and great graphics are a great place to start. The controls are also pretty easy to grasp.A few of the things I love about this game is how the player's feet and bat are on fire when they are maxed out. It's just like how NBA Jam would allow a player to be "On Fire" after making 3 shots in a row.The ability to bean a player and charge the mound is also very cool.I also love the announcing team. The guy who does the voice of Jim Shorts is a Chicago radio personality named Kevin Matthews.I used to listen to his radio show several years ago and nearly fell off of my couch when I heard the Jim Shots character. If you love baseball with an attitude, you must run and get this game.It was money well spent and I hope if you get it you will feel the same!
