Son in law is Yankees fan (no, I did NOT give the marriage permission for that reason alone, but who listens to their dad anymore???) and daughter is a Red Sox fan...

While I hate both teams (sorry) this was a perfect gift for them to keep their usually friendly sports rivalry going...

Item is high quality and looks nice just sitting there as a display...

For the chess/baseball enthusiast, a perfect fun thing to have. Nice solid pieces will stand up to younger hands too.

We first saw these for sale in the gift shop at Yankee Stadium. We just had to tell our good friends about the set because of their in-family Red Sox/Yankees rivalry and we ended up ordering one for them to give as a Christmas gift. Turns out my husband was so taken with the thing he had to get a set of his very own - so I had to order a second one of these.

The gift was a huge hit.

P.S. Neither recipient is especially interested in chess!

Maybe the point of the "Red Sox vs Yankees Chess" set is that it is for display purposes because I have a hard time thinking that this particular chess set is going to get a lot of practical use. If you are not a baseball fans of the Boston Red Sox or the New York Yankees then there is really no reason to want to play chess with this set because chances are the other person will be a fan of one of those teams (why else would they own the set?), which means you are going to have to play the other team and endure their taunts when Alex Rodriguez (the right-handed batting bishop) takes down Pedro Martinez (the right-handed pitching queen). If you are a Red Sox fan who ends up playing a Yankees fan, or visa versa, then it is going to be pretty hard to find a time when you are going to want to play each other in chess. The Red Sox won two of three games in Boston and swept the series in Yankee Stadium, so why would a fan of the Big Apple team want to play chess with somebody from Beantown at this point? Besides, would they not sell more copies if this was the "Yankees vs. Red Sox Chess" set?
None of the figures actually look like particular Red Sox and Yankee players on the current rosters. The knights end up being Alex Rodriguez and Gary Sheffield (as identical twins) because those are the two big right-handed bats for the Yankees; the figure looks more like Jason Giambi, but he is left-handed and therefore out of the running. The pawns are all infielders going for grounders (Jeter and Garciapara?), the rooks are catchers (Posada and Varitek), the knights are outfields making a catch (Williams and Rameriez), and the bishops are batters, as noted above. The pitcher is the queen but the manager (Torre and Francona) is king, which makes sense.
